That's it really, more details to follow, but do you like marzipan or not?

Ok, it's my husband's big birthday in a few weeks... We're having a big party... Approx 110 folk invited... He wants marzipan in the cake, I hate marzipan and assumed most other folk did, and so said we shouldn't... Bearing in mind I am getting a small cake for his actual birthday family dinner (birthday the Tuesday, party the Saturday) and will get marzipan on that (even though the rest of us hate it..).. I don't want to gat a cake made that most folk won't enjoy.. But appears there are a lot of marzipan lovers out there Grin

Better than chocolate, definitely

hollyisalovelyname · 07/02/2016 22:02

DISGUSTING

Quietattheback · 07/02/2016 22:02

Hate it except in lidl Stolon bites which are utterly sublime.

EarSlaps · 07/02/2016 22:04

Hated it for years, had to cut it off the Christmas cake. Ate almonds and liked amaretto though. Then I tried it last year after decorating the cake and suddenly found I love it. Ate huge chunks of the leftovers.

I hated coconut for years too then became addicted after loving Thai curry. I keep trying to like mushrooms and bananas but I just can't. Maybe I will one day.

Destinysdaughter · 07/02/2016 22:05

Hate it! But love almonds.

budgiegirl · 07/02/2016 22:06

I'm a professional cake maker, and in my experience, the vast majority of my customers do not want marzipan on their cake (assuming it's a sponge). In fact, I must have made over 1500 wedding and birthday cakes, and I think I can count on one hand the number of customers that have asked for marzipan. I'd say that you are correct (despite the number of people on here that like it) - the majority don't like it.

I love it, by the way, so I'm not biased!

PatriciaHolm · 07/02/2016 22:09

Nasty stuff.

However, it does have the one redeeming feature of normally being peelable off.

We divide 50/50 as a family on it!

Realistically more people will eat the cake if it doesn't have it.

HappyGirlNow · 07/02/2016 22:09

Thanks budgiegirl it is sponge.. We did a straw poll while out for dinner with others tonight and all hated marzipan bar my husband so surprised at replies tonight...

But thanks for all opinions Grin

I love it! I make my own and dip it in dark chocolate to set. It's off the scale delicious! DH loathes it though so we always make him a mini individual Christmas cake decorated without it and I slather the extra on the other cake.

grumpysquash2 · 07/02/2016 22:10

Answering the post....

No. Not under any circumstances. The closest I would get is Stollen, but I would still nibble round the marzipan bit.

NewLife4Me · 07/02/2016 22:11

I love it, in all shapes, forms and colours.
Those lovely crafted expensive ones are beautiful and a family member will always treat me for xmas, and other occasions.

grumpysquash2 · 07/02/2016 22:11

How about marzipan decorations for DH's cake which he can pick off and eat and no-one else has to suffer :)

Leeds2 · 07/02/2016 22:14

Loathe it.

Room101isWhereIUsedToLive · 07/02/2016 22:16

I love it especially those balls on top of Simmel cake!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/02/2016 22:18

I love it, but surely it wouldnt work on sponge.

stayathomegardener · 07/02/2016 22:19

I love Marzipan but not on a sponge.
No that would be wrong.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 07/02/2016 22:20

Love it .

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 07/02/2016 22:21

love it. but it has to be good quality, not too sweet. niederegger is my guilty pleasure.

Lurkedforever1 · 07/02/2016 22:21

Absolutely love it. I don't like almonds particularly and don't have a sweet tooth- can go weeks without even fancying cake/ biscuits etc. But I can happily eat marzipan by the block.

amarmai · 07/02/2016 22:21

as easy to make as it is to eat-almost!

Ameliablue · 07/02/2016 22:26

I think it is yum but realistically most slices of cake will only have a small piece of marzipan that is easily removed for those who don't like it.

Littledafty · 07/02/2016 22:27

Horrible stuff.
May have been put off when I was younger after being sent to stay with family friends for a week. The daughter I was sharing a room with was really excited because she'd prepared a midnight feast for us.
I had visions of all sorts of sweets/chocolate appearing.
The 'feast' turned out to be a block of marzipan.
Shuddering at the memory, marzipan is the taste of gritty childhood disappointment.

augustusglupe · 07/02/2016 22:28

I love it!! I can't have it in, I'd just eat the whole block!!

Jibberjabberjooo · 07/02/2016 22:28

No.
