That's it really, more details to follow, but do you like marzipan or not?

Love it, another nibbler of blocks, never had it on a sponge though, always had it on fruit cake.

Ameliablue · 07/02/2016 22:29

Also although I like it I can't really get my head round it on a sponge cake. I know many cake makers do like to use it though as it gives a smooth base for the icing.

GlowWine · 07/02/2016 22:30

Love real marzipan, agree about Niederegger, it's not safe around me Blush. However the yellow flavoured sugary stuff in most cakes is horrid....Smile

I've never liked it but it is easy to pick off. Although I cant do it now since i've developed a nut allergy.

hooliodancer · 07/02/2016 22:32

It is the food of the devil. Horrid stuff.

steppemum · 07/02/2016 22:36

love it.

But it doesn't belong on a sponge cake. It goes with fruit cake and royal icing, or in Stollen, or wrapped in dark choccy.

Blu · 07/02/2016 22:39

Horrible stuff.
But
Easy enough to pick off a cake
And
Who puts it in sponge cake? Unless it is Battenburg? (Horrible stuff)

wowfudge · 07/02/2016 22:43

Love it. It's the best bit on cakes Smile

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 07/02/2016 22:45

I had no idea so many people hated marzipan! What is wrong with you all?!

Fishcake72 · 07/02/2016 22:46

Vile! Vile!

OhYouLuckyDuck · 07/02/2016 22:47

Love the stuff, especially home made.

OhforGodsake · 07/02/2016 22:48

YES! I make my own Christmas cakes and the Marzipan layer is as thin as tissue paper because I keep eating it when I roll it out. I've even tried freezing it beforehand, in an attempt to possibly get a thicker layer on thearth cake. Did you know that frozen Marzipan is delish?

ilovesooty · 07/02/2016 22:49

Loathe it.

I think it is yum but realistically most slices of cake will only have a small piece of marzipan that is easily removed for those who don't like it.

Decent marzipan is quite expensive, and you'd need quite a bit for a cake to serve 110. Seems a bit daft to pay for something that most people will pick off. I do like the idea of removable marzipan decorations though.

OhforGodsake · 07/02/2016 22:51

Can I have yours please sooty?

emwithme · 07/02/2016 22:52

No, it's evil, nasty stuff but DH loves it so I peel it off any cakes I have with it on and give it to him.

Tactfulcactus · 07/02/2016 22:52

It's wonderful stuff. The bright yellow shop stuff that smells like playdo is a bit grim but better than no marzipan at all!! My whole family loves it. We peel off the yucky icing and leave that.
I made a really dense dark damp chocolate cake with pistachio marzipan once. That was amazing. I'll have to try and find the recipe now.

Marcipex · 07/02/2016 22:52

OhforGodsake frozen marzipan!! Shall try it.

(Warm marzipan that you dropped on a hot hob and picked up and ate is also delish.)

OllyBJolly · 07/02/2016 22:54

You lot have just forced me to go and pull a chunk off the lump in the fridge!

Love it! But not on sponge.

eachtigertires · 07/02/2016 22:56

Yes. I once at a whole block in a day. But I don't recommend that and I wouldn't do it again.

PantsOfGold · 07/02/2016 22:57

Oh, God - I love the stuff. I used to eat blocks of cooking marzipan and eat in one sitting.

OhforGodsake · 07/02/2016 23:01

Really marcipex? Dropped on a hot hob, you say? Sort of toasted Marzipan? Oh my! That sounds like something that needs further investigation! How long do you need to leave it on the hob for?

Woopsiedaisy · 07/02/2016 23:01

Adore it.

It would definitely feature in a 'last meal' and might even be the luxury I would choose to take to my dessert island.
