to object to MNHQ forcing a MALE/FEMALE gender binary on my account.

I don't have any GENDER.

My MN account forces me to pick from two 'genders'.

I can't even opt out, it's a forced binary choice.

I'm not agender, pangender, cisgender, transgender, male gender, female gender or ANY GENDER.

If you want to know my sex, I am happy to provide that information. But you'll have to add that in as a field, because it doesn't exist currently.

Sex and gender are not the same thing. If you insist on collecting data by gender and making it a forced choice I would like an option as follows:

"Reject gender as a harmful, made up, bullshit concept".

Then when you analyse your account database you can say
X% identify as female gender
Y% identify as male gender
Z% reject gender as a bullshit concept.

AIBU to request MNHQ to alter my account details so that they do not misrepresent me?

TheSecondViola
It's not for me to say how someone else identifies, but yes, if the whole concept is bullshit then it all becomes meaningless.
It is not something you can force people to claim.

Sex and gender are completely different things.

Lurking, language is important though. And yes I do ban my young child from describing someone as an idiot. So nasty and unimaginative. He gets it from American tv. The word seems to be more acceptable there. Cultural differences and all that.
Wrt banning poverty, that'd be great wouldn't it? If poverty didn't exist and we no longer needed to describe it. For the moment though, it does, and if we take away words that describe factual situations, then we lose the power to talk about them. I'm sure the government would love that!
I'm sure you can see a parallel between being able to name the problem "poverty" and being able to name the problem of sex-segregated spaces, crime stats etc? It's the thin end of the wedge if gender becomes widely used instead of sex.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 14/01/2016 12:30

All the shit that's going on in the world and Mumsnet is what you get angry about. Are you, in fact, a parent? Or is that too binary for you?

I don't think you understand. Sex is binary, and that's fine. Gender is a made-up thing. Therefore many people don't want to be identified by it as though that's what matters.

Jux · 14/01/2016 12:30

Truly they were, Gamerchick. I know people did that. Grin

So maybe the change came from Form Designers, rather than po-faced Westminster chatterati as I always wanted to think, or Women's Studies lecturers (which is what I actually thought).

DrDreReturns · 14/01/2016 12:31

The question should be 'Do you have a cock.' Very straightforward Yes / No answer.

limitedperiodonly · 14/01/2016 12:31

Epona yes.

Statistics are used to understand trends. They're useful if you want to tailor services to make them more helpful to groups who either dominate or are under-represented.

If everything is sorted by gender rather than sex you will mess up statistics on crime, access to education or healthcare etc. I think that's a really quite important thing to be bothered about.

MN isn't terribly important in the scheme of things but this is reinforcing the view that sex doesn't matter because we're all equal now. We're not.

RivieraKid · 14/01/2016 12:31

I'm not agender, pangender, cisgender, transgender, male gender, female gender or ANY GENDER.

To be agender is to not feel as though you have any gender, so by definition, you are agender.

Agender is a term which can be literally translated as 'without gender'. It can be seen either as a non-binary gender identity or as a statement of not having a gender identity. People who identify as agender may describe themselves as one or more of the following: Genderless or lacking gender. Gender neutral.

MoMoTy · 14/01/2016 12:31

Wow you really need to get over yourself. This shit does not matter. Call yourself a tree if you want, nobody cares. Stamping your feet and creating a drama in your head will only make you go crazy. Hmm

gleam · 14/01/2016 12:31

YANBU.

I've changed my gender to male now.

x2boys · 14/01/2016 12:31

Gringamerchick.

eloquent · 14/01/2016 12:32

You are damn right YABU, this is clearly a thread to "bash" trans people.
Do fuck off OP.

cleaty · 14/01/2016 12:32

Why would we choose to call ourselves Agender. Bullshit concept.

DeAtHnOtE · 14/01/2016 12:35

YANBU.

I hate that I feel thick that I thought sex and gender were the same.
Not knowing something doesn't make you thick! It just wasn't on your radar. Plus, gender is often used to mean sex even though they're two different things. Anyone who isn't aware they are different can hardly be at fault when the words are used wrong so much of the time.

Jux · 14/01/2016 12:35

Scarlett, sorry, my last post was to Scarlett, not gamerchick. Blush

Copperkettle · 14/01/2016 12:36

Perhaps you could explain the difference on here. I understand though can't get worked up about it. I suspect a lot of people are just unaware of the difference.

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/01/2016 12:36

eloquent

Who has "bashed" transpeople here?

GrimyaTheFaithful · 14/01/2016 12:37

YANBU

Goingtobeawesome · 14/01/2016 12:37

Thank you DeAt. I'd just never given it any thought.

EponasWildDaughter · 14/01/2016 12:37

Ahhh,

Now i see where you're coming from OP.

YANBU

I think your OP made your viewpoint unclear.

WoodHeaven · 14/01/2016 12:38

If the idea that you need what the gender of the person is, then I would want a male/female/MTF/FTM/agender etc... as options.
Because if the reason is to tailor the site to some specific categories then surely having just male/female isn't represntative anyway?

So yes, binairy choice = talking about sex and this is the word that should be used.

HairyLittleCarrot · 14/01/2016 12:38

Eloquent
Not bashing trans people at all.

I don't want to be forced to tick a box between two religions, if I am neither.
I do not have a gender.
I have a sex.

limitedperiodonly · 14/01/2016 12:38

A transwoman on bbc breakfast was outraged that her GP wanted to log a pre op transwoman as Male on meducal reports. Do they not understand it's a waste of time calling her for a smear test or breast cancer scan.

Also in not considering that she might be more at risk from prostate cancer, if she still has a prostate, which some MTT's do, as surgery is not compulsory if you want to present.

vertigonun Someone will soon be along to tell you of the small number of men who get breast cancer.

DeAtHnOtE · 14/01/2016 12:38

No probs Going.

I'd just never given it any thought. It's a fucking rabbit hole.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 14/01/2016 12:39

I agree with cleaty,

The options should include sex: male/female/opt out
gender:female/male/neither/opt out

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 14/01/2016 12:40

People like you OP are why trans people struggle to be taken seriously
