to object to MNHQ forcing a MALE/FEMALE gender binary on my account.

I don't have any GENDER.

My MN account forces me to pick from two 'genders'.

I can't even opt out, it's a forced binary choice.

I'm not agender, pangender, cisgender, transgender, male gender, female gender or ANY GENDER.

If you want to know my sex, I am happy to provide that information. But you'll have to add that in as a field, because it doesn't exist currently.

Sex and gender are not the same thing. If you insist on collecting data by gender and making it a forced choice I would like an option as follows:

"Reject gender as a harmful, made up, bullshit concept".

Then when you analyse your account database you can say
X% identify as female gender
Y% identify as male gender
Z% reject gender as a bullshit concept.

AIBU to request MNHQ to alter my account details so that they do not misrepresent me?

It's an on-line forum Confused

You must be exhausted getting worked up about things.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 14/01/2016 12:07

I think it wouldn't hurt to have a couple of other boxes eg. neither or both of the above, and prefer not to say

Keep more people slightly happier at no great cost to anyone else? Smile

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 14/01/2016 12:07

Actually as abit of a word pedant i agree!

Online my spag is awful though I know! See first sentence..

MuttonDressedAsMutton · 14/01/2016 12:08

Dear God. What fresh made up insanity is this?

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 14/01/2016 12:08

This thread is depressing in the ignorance demonstrated - ironically, in a way which would presumably also depress a transperson!

ExitPursuedByABear · 14/01/2016 12:08

I think I must be missing something.

Confused
HairyLittleCarrot · 14/01/2016 12:08

Mumsnet more than most is aware of the SEX/GENDER difference.

Why not ask them to represent us accurately?

I'm happy to leave the sex/gender information completely blank of course.

Your ethos is not unreasonable, your op is.

I broached this with school, who referred me to the LEA, who tell them to use gender as opposed to sex, we had a polite conversation. Job done.

HumphreyCobblers · 14/01/2016 12:08

Gender is NOT the same as sex. It is inaccurate.

gamerchick · 14/01/2016 12:10

Man I'm so sick of reading about this gender sex thing. Get a fucking life or find somewhere that panders to you.

limitedperiodonly · 14/01/2016 12:10

YANBU. It does matter. Collecting information on gender, which we can choose, as opposed to sex, which we can't, skews statistics.

I don't know whether it's a mistake, because many people mix up sex and gender, or a deliberate but misguided attempt to be non-transphobic.

SuburbanRhonda · 14/01/2016 12:10

I think you're right to want another box saying "no gender" or to change it to "sex".

I think you're BVU not to have contact MNHQ about this.

peggyundercrackers · 14/01/2016 12:10

do people tell the truth when ticking boxes? who cares - tick a box and be done with it

LidikaLikes · 14/01/2016 12:10

Genuine question, not meaning to be rude: now that gender, trans, LGBT issues are in mainstream now do people suddenly switch on to them? Or are they always something people have been provoked about, but just felt unable to speak out?

Two questions, I know!

OP, yanbu in your issue here, but I agree that contacting MNHQ directly makes more sense.

RudeElf · 14/01/2016 12:11

Really there are more important issues in life.

Ooh another one who must never complain about anything ever because "there are more important issues in life"

AuntieStella · 14/01/2016 12:12

I've noticed more things recently which offer the choice of "male" "female" and "prefer not to say"

That covers both those who want to be as private as possible and those who do not wish to identify with the two main genders/sexes.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 14/01/2016 12:12

RudeElf and I'm sure that 'save your ire for something that matters' will be along soon....

00100001 · 14/01/2016 12:13

I'm with peggy who cares?

It's not like you have to tell the truth.

It's just for marketing anyway.

I don't have my correct age, address, title... or anything on most websites like Mumsnet.

RudeElf · 14/01/2016 12:13

This thread is depressing in the ignorance demostrated

Yep. Just thinking that.

SurferJet · 14/01/2016 12:13

Man I'm so sick of reading about this gender sex thing. Get a fucking life or find somewhere that panders to you

But changing 'sex' to 'gender' is pandering to someone or it wouldn't have been changed?

Op: yanbu in questioning this.

EponasWildDaughter · 14/01/2016 12:14

It does matter. Collecting information on gender, which we can choose, as opposed to sex, which we can't, skews statistics.

Limited, is this the 'feeling like a woman' thing? There'll be men (male by birth) ticking the female box and vv, skewing stats?

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/01/2016 12:15

Seek, yes exactly!

Iggi999 · 14/01/2016 12:15

Has it always been so? Can't remember what it asked when I registered.
OP YANBU.

HairyLittleCarrot · 14/01/2016 12:16

The difference between gender and sex is the difference between placing the recently convicted male child rapist into female or male prison.

Gender is bullshit.
