There is no need for bleach

I never use it in my house as I just think there is no need, everything can be done with a bit of elbow grease IMO.

I know people who use toilet bleach to mop the floor, when washing whites, doing the dishes with coffee / tea stains, in a spray bottle for wiping down crumbs in the kitchen. It makes me feel unwell being in certain friends houses that have a bleach fetish.

Anyone else manage to survive without it?

i use it to brighten my white sink

HackerFucker22 · 02/01/2016 21:59

I use Milton on worktops and loo (daily, am toilet training dc1 at the moment) but this is the second time I've read on here today that I should be using bleach.

Does flash with bleach count?

Sparklingbrook · 02/01/2016 21:59

I am really baffled when people say they love the smell. It really makes me feel horribly sick. If I smell it in someone's house I assume a recent D&V outbreak.

I don't hang about if I get a whiff.

LucilleBluth · 02/01/2016 22:00

If you have animals and children you need a bit of bleach to keep your home clean/healthy imo. It's the only thing that kills dog smells and helps kill germs with poorly children. Nothing gets bathrooms cleaner.

Takeparacetamolandstopmoaning · 02/01/2016 22:00

I use bleach loads and love it. It's a great cleaner- it's increasingly being used again in hospitals because it's just so great Grin

dementedma · 02/01/2016 22:01

While we're on bleach, the one that gets me is the amount of people using wet wipes for everything and then bunging them down the (bleached) loo.
Use a bloody reusable cloth!
Am in MN heaven tonight - a bleach thread AND a laundry thread to judge on Grin

WitchWay · 02/01/2016 22:01

I only use bleach for cleaning the toilet brush once a week, & occasionally for removing stains from my Le Creuset pans when I'm fed up with their looking brown & grotty on the inside.

penguinsarecool12 · 02/01/2016 22:02

For the record i use bleach every other day in my loo, and i also squirt a bit in the mop bucket when i mop floors.

WitchWay · 02/01/2016 22:02

OMG I just admitted to having a toilet brush

AAAAARGH Grin

Sparklingbrook · 02/01/2016 22:02

Yet another subject that could have it's own topic. I can nearly smell it just reading this thread.

moggiek · 02/01/2016 22:02

Unashamedly love bleach!

Gwenhwyfar · 02/01/2016 22:03

It's what we swim in when we go to a chlorinated swimming pool. I like the smell in small doses.

I went out for more bleach today, I've had raging diarrhoea after a course of antibiotics and think I may have a reoccurrence of Clostridium Difficile.

The NHS choices website advises the use of bleach for prevention of transmission.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 02/01/2016 22:05

We only use bleach in the toilet and have never had a d&v bug either.

Conclusion: anecdotes do not equal data!

foragogo · 02/01/2016 22:05

Reusable cloth = breeding ground for bacteria. Look brush = boak. I'll stick to my bleach :). Wrird about the smell? Seems people either love it or hate it. I find it really clean and refreshing.

Takeparacetamolandstopmoaning · 02/01/2016 22:07

I don't agree with people who say exposure to germs builds your immune system. Exposure to ie nurovirus just gives you nurovirus Grin

I used to think wipes were wasteful but then I became so busy I ceased to care. Wipes make cleaning quick and easy. I don't flush them though because they might block my loo and getting that sorted will just take more TIMe I don't have.

FairyFluffbum · 02/01/2016 22:08

We are a bleach house hold and proud.

We will use it in the sink if the drains a bit smelly, on the floors, in the bathroom, in the toilet( though I wish dh would give me heads up for this as I frequently gas myself).

I will even pop a bit in the bin if it really smells but the bag is only half full

PinkSquash · 02/01/2016 22:08

I like bleach. It's a comforting smell to me. I don't use it everywhere though, mainly in the bathroom and in the kitchen sink

penguinsarecool12 · 02/01/2016 22:09

Yeah i'm surprised that cleaning co's are even allowed to sell those flushable wipes, or not have lots of people claiming some lawsuit for block pipes.

GreatFuckability · 02/01/2016 22:10

I never bleach anything (except my hair) and I can count on two fingers the number of sickness bugs my dc have ever had.

bettyberry · 02/01/2016 22:10

I only bleach the loo because DS still can't aim and still pees all over the seat and down the side of the bowl and my eco cleaner just doesn't seem to kill the gawd awful smell.

I don't get the obsessiveness with it though. Hot soapy water kills a good % of bugs.

dementedma I hate wet wipes with a passion! Flannels for face related wet wipe needs here and microfibre cloths for all cleaning that's needed. Neighbour flushes wipes and blocked the drains... That was not nice

dementedma · 02/01/2016 22:12

I have loads of reusable cloths and rinse in very hot water after use, then wait until there is aload of washing going in and bung them in with the wash. We get coughs and colds but are tummy bug, D and V free pretty much so it can't be that dangerous.

princesspineapple · 02/01/2016 22:12

Another bleach lover here! Squirt some down the loo every single night before bed to kill all the germs while I sleep :)

TheQuestToStopPigeonWoppie · 02/01/2016 22:12

Well, hydrogen peroxide is a bleach; it does bleach things, eg hairs! I think 'bleach' is a term for a whole bunch of chemicals.

As for us, we live in a hard water area, so we use an acidic toilet cleaner to get rid of the limescale in, and also clean, the loo. A regular alkaline bleach will do nothing for the limescale, except make it whiter Hmm
