There is no need for bleach

I never use it in my house as I just think there is no need, everything can be done with a bit of elbow grease IMO.

I know people who use toilet bleach to mop the floor, when washing whites, doing the dishes with coffee / tea stains, in a spray bottle for wiping down crumbs in the kitchen. It makes me feel unwell being in certain friends houses that have a bleach fetish.

Anyone else manage to survive without it?

Eco cleaner makes everything smell like urine. Or, more likely can't mask the smell of urine so after a few days your bathroom smells like a urinal

helensburgh · 02/01/2016 22:14

I only use it if a tummy bug in the house. Only thing readily available to kill some bugs like norovirus. Having suffered a few outbreaks I'll try anything

I use about 1 teaspoon of bleach per week - to tackle the tea stains in our mugs. I like my tea really strong and neither the dishwasher nor vigorous hand washing can cope with the stains.

I can't stand the smell of bleach and never use it for anything else.

Sallystyle · 02/01/2016 22:17

I will use it on my white kitchen floor every now and then as nothing else removes the stains and get it white again as good as bleach does.

Why did they put a white kitchen floor in? I need a new one!

I also occasionally use it down the toilet as well.

Reusable cloth = breeding ground for bacteria.

I keep 30 cloths here for all cleaning stuff. Fresh one after every meal for cleaning down sides. kept in a bucket with used tea towels when dirty. 60 degree wash along with tea towels kills the bugs.

I have pan brushes too that regularly go through the dishwasher because that gets hot enough to kill bugs with the right programme

I love bleach. I get a perverse pleasure out of the thought of all those germs being being eaten up. I use it down the loo, to wash floors and in the sink/on dishcloths.
I have a phobia of being sick though, I think that has a lot to do with it.

hefzi · 02/01/2016 22:18

The smell of bleach always reminds me of one of my grandfathers: it was his only cleaning product, and you could smell it coming down the street! Bloody clean house, though - even without taking into account he was a 95 year old man.

M48294Y · 02/01/2016 22:18

Wtf with people using anti bac cleaner on their kitchen surfaces too?

steff13 · 02/01/2016 22:20

I keep it in the house, I use it for my white clothes and for occasional cleaning. I also use it for bleach baths for my daughter when her eczema gets bad.

penguinsarecool12 · 02/01/2016 22:21

I would think its more unusual to not use anti bac cleaners in the kitchen?

BahHumbugs · 02/01/2016 22:21

I drank a small amount of bleach when I was a toddler, and ate buttons it hasnt put me off, but I dont bother to buy it now. Xmas Blush

Mooshbag · 02/01/2016 22:22

I hate the smell of bleach and would never use it on a food prep surface. I use white vinegar in he kitchen...I use bleach in the loo, but have to keep the bathroom door closed until I flush the loo.

M48294Y · 02/01/2016 22:22

Really? I'm amazed.

FairyFluffbum · 02/01/2016 22:22

Bleach baths?

I've never heard of this.
Wouldn't it make eczema worse?

Same to putting a drop in with cut flowers. Doesn't it kill them?

steff13 · 02/01/2016 22:25

Wouldn't it make eczema worse?

No, there was a study done where they gave some kids bleach baths and others regular baths, and the bleach bath kids were helped so dramatically by the baths that they stopped the study so all the kids could have bleach baths. It's 1/4 C bleach in a tub full of water.

MaisieDotes · 02/01/2016 22:25

People who use it for clothes- what do you do? Put it in the drawer of the washing machine or what? Just a tiny bit?

sparkling and others who hate the smell, I have a similar revulsion to Dettol-type disinfectant. I guess an association between the cleaner and the smell/ thought of vomit was formed at a very young age. Those kind of associations can be very deeply rooted.

expatinscotland · 02/01/2016 22:26

I love bleach. It's my friend.

Sallystyle · 02/01/2016 22:26

I don't use anti-bac on my kitchen counters very often.

Meat is prepared on chopping boards. I see no reason to use it that often.

But I'm not at all a germaphobe, unless I'm at work.

MaisieDotes · 02/01/2016 22:27

Oh yes I put a bit of Milton into cut flowers and it makes them last longer. Ex-mil told me to do that- she was a florist for years.

penguinsarecool12 · 02/01/2016 22:27

I would have thought kitchen surfaces need anti bac for food poisoning no?

steff13 · 02/01/2016 22:28

My washing machine has a bleach dispenser. I put 1C of liquid bleach in there. But, I have been buying bleach tablets for the laundry lately, you just drop one in the water as the washer is filling up.

Mooshbag · 02/01/2016 22:28

I'm never ill...

steff13 · 02/01/2016 22:30

I use anti-bacterial cleaner on my surfaces, but I'm a messy cook. I cut chicken on a cutting board, for instance, but I still manage to slop raw chicken juice all over the counter, so I feel like I need to disinfect.

M48294Y · 02/01/2016 22:30

Definitely no. Not necessary at all.

I am 53 and I am the only person to have had food poisoning in my family (once - from a bagged salad). None of the rest of us have ever had fp. I don't own any anti bacterial products. That is a lie you have been sold by Dettol and the like.

Sparklingbrook · 02/01/2016 22:30

Maisie I don't think my Mum used it so not sure where my reaction comes from. It's very real. I should ask her. She certainly doesn't use bleach now and she's in her 70s.

I had one friend as a child and her whole house smelt of TCP. The food tasted of it too. It was horrible. I dread to think what her parents did with it.
