There is no need for bleach

I never use it in my house as I just think there is no need, everything can be done with a bit of elbow grease IMO.

I know people who use toilet bleach to mop the floor, when washing whites, doing the dishes with coffee / tea stains, in a spray bottle for wiping down crumbs in the kitchen. It makes me feel unwell being in certain friends houses that have a bleach fetish.

Anyone else manage to survive without it?

I often read about white vinegar but only see malt vinegar or white wine vinegar in the shops. Where do I get this stuff? Pharmacy or supermarket. Dont want the house to smell like a chippy

I'm a detol girl for kitchen work tops, bathroom spray for the bathroom. I use washing up liquid in the kitchen if it's REALLY grubby from the dogs if not a steam mop and steam for bathroom. Washing up liquid and water for living room floor and hallway as its engineered wood... If I could use the steam mop I would there too.

Only 2 places I really use bleach. The toilet. And the butler sink as a lot of raw stuff, dirty stuff etc goes in there. It's got bicarb in the one I use so helps keep it white.

I clean my toilets once a week with the brush. Bleach around the bowl after a number 2. Once a month it would be a bit too dirty?!

Demented somewhere like homebase or wilko is a good bet. I run a vinegar wash through my washing machine to freshen it up. It does still smell but doesn't really linger

VegetablEsoup · 02/01/2016 23:33

demented it's distilled vinegar (the clear stuff) that's great for cleaning. the smell goes away quickly. it's very strong and not chip-shop-y.

another bleach addict here - although I do a lot of my cleaning with damp microfibre cloths. I can't do scrubbing, either. I won't have any antibac stuff, except for emergency hand cleaning stuff in the car first aid kit. My cloths get an overnight soak in bleach before being chucked in a very hot wash.

PeridotPassion · 02/01/2016 23:53

The only place bleach goes is down the toilet. There's really no need for it anywhere else. I like my home to smell clean and fresh, not clinical and like a hospital or swimming pool.

Inertia · 02/01/2016 23:57

I'm a happy bleacher but I'm stunned at the bleach baths mentioned upthread.

"if it was food poisoning he'd be iller for longer."

Not sure, but if you eat bad eggs (which I think would be classed as food poisoning) that could be over pretty quickly, once they've passed through your system if you know what I mean.

Bleach isn't a cleaner, it's a disinfectant……….. Bleach only works effectively on a visibly clean surface i.e. on with reduced/free from organic matter. Bleaching floors is a waste of time. Floors need to be clean and grease free not disinfected.
Neat bleach is no more effective than a dilute bleach solution.

DragonMamma · 03/01/2016 00:17

I love a bit of bleach - the co-op lime one being my favourite.

I'm very liberal with my bleach, the toilets and sinks get a good dosing to the tune of 1-2 bottles a week.

I hate not having it in the house. I love slinging all my cloths in a boiling hot sink full of bleach - gives me enormous satisfaction!

Kittypawpuff · 03/01/2016 00:42

i love bleach and white vinegar (not together though)

MaisyMooMoo · 03/01/2016 01:02

At home I use Eco cleaning products however we do have a bottle of Flash Bathroom lurking somewhere for occasional use. Used to use Flash on everything but since turning Eco friendly I find bleach stuff really offensive to my nasal passage Smile. I use a lot of anti bac at the office though because many staff share the same kitchen and some have disgusting habits!

shadowfax07 · 03/01/2016 01:04

I'm trying to train DP to understand that bleach down the loo does not equal cleaning them, but I'm failing. I use bleach on my dishclothes, and used to use it on my white draining board.

Can you tell I'm another one who retches at the smell of bleach, and won't go swimming in a pool treated with chlorine?

Chuggsbugs · 03/01/2016 01:11

I can't stand it. Makes me feel very sick. Floors can be steam mopped and a bottle of cheap white vinegar left overnight in a toilet bowl lifts any limescale and leaves it sparkling.

torthecatlady · 03/01/2016 02:10

Bleach for toilets (more often toilet gel) and plug holes here! No where else. As and when it's needed...

We get mould in our bathroom so buy a mould and mildew spray for that - a once a month.

Normal fairy liquid for dishes (no dishwasher) and very hot water.

I buy anti bac for everywhere else - 2 cats (will not get the F off my kitchen counters!!) This is done multiple times a day, before and after meal prep etc.

I too have asthma, all cleaning products trigger it!

We use mostly washable cloths for cleaning - one in bathroom and one in kitchen and they are replaced and washed (washing machine) for next rotation. The dish cloth occasionally has boiled kettle water poured over it and left in the kitchen sink.

However we do you kitchen roll for cat related cleaning up (for mess around litter tray)

For white vinegar I buy 'concentrated condiment essence' it is the stuff chip shops buy and dilute down for vinegar and is about 80% acetic acid (varies). A 5L tub costs about £8 and needs diluting about 1 in 16 water to be normal vinegar strength - I use a splash of 1 in 5 down the loo -as the water in there dilutes it anyway. I get clear (it does come with brown colouring too) and used to get it from cash and carry but now the local chip shop will stick one on their order for me. (Although I buy a couple to save them the hassle) -one 5L tub lasts me over a year.

Yes I know h2o2 can be called a bleach. But its obvious when someone say bleach they mean chlorine bleach.

I use h2o2 to clean my teeth, it's great

Never had any need for bleach. I've often wondered what zoflora is...
