There is no need for bleach

I never use it in my house as I just think there is no need, everything can be done with a bit of elbow grease IMO.

I know people who use toilet bleach to mop the floor, when washing whites, doing the dishes with coffee / tea stains, in a spray bottle for wiping down crumbs in the kitchen. It makes me feel unwell being in certain friends houses that have a bleach fetish.

Anyone else manage to survive without it?

It's really the only domestically available thing which kills norovirus and some other tummy bugs.
If you've ever had an outbreak. You'll know why bleach exists

wannaBe · 02/01/2016 21:40

I use it in the toilets. when both me and DS had an evil d&V bug recently I used gallons of it down my toilet every time either of us went. use general cleaner/steamer for other household stuff though. Bleach for the floor if particularly bad

MarlenaGru · 02/01/2016 21:41

My husband loves it. I do not.

I believe in a few germs building the immune system.

Plus it stinks! I don't like my house smelling like a hospital.

IamCarcass · 02/01/2016 21:43

But why worry about greasy elbows when you can use beach? Grin

DyslexicScientist · 02/01/2016 21:45

A quick google says hydrogen peroxide kills norovirus. That is very safe in small weak solutions.

I don't use bleach to clean as such, but to disinfect. A bleach fetish is unhealthy, especially if you have little ones, but there is a need in my house for the stuff. I am glad I don't have to live without it!

Jackie0 · 02/01/2016 21:47

I keep it for the loo.
I don't use it for general cleaning because of the clothes I've ruined with it.

shazzarooney99 · 02/01/2016 21:49

I hate the smell of bleach, i dont use the stuff at all.

SomedayMyPrinceWillCome · 02/01/2016 21:49

Would I be thrown off Mumsnet if I admitted to cleaning my toilet brush in bleach...?

gamerchick · 02/01/2016 21:49

A monthly scrub?

I don't use bleach unless they're a illness in the house but my toilets get done more regular than monthly.

witsender · 02/01/2016 21:49

Vinegar, bicarb and essential oils here. Wee bit of borax sometimes.

gamerchick · 02/01/2016 21:50

*there is

gamerchick · 02/01/2016 21:51

And bleach is the only thing that comes close to killing noro Angry HP you would need more than a weak solution.

knobblyknee · 02/01/2016 21:52

Elbow grease is good but doesnt kill germs and you cant get into the drains with it. I use bleach in the loo and drains, and Pound Shop O2/Laundry bleach if its needed in the wash plus anywhere else. Its like hydrogen peroxide and as goof as chlorine bleach but without the smell.

Notgivingin789 · 02/01/2016 21:52

I admit. I have a bleach addiction.

penguinsarecool12 · 02/01/2016 21:53

You might be suspected of witchcraft now Someday Wink

LeotardoDaVinci · 02/01/2016 21:54

What about its negative effects on the environment? A reason not to use bleach???

Salmotrutta · 02/01/2016 21:55

You only scrub your toilet monthly OP?? Confused

Or did I misunderstand?

Mine gets a wipe down daily with dettol wipes and about 3 proper cleans a week with a disinfectant solution.

AliceInUnderpants · 02/01/2016 21:55

I love bleach. I love the smell, it's comforting to me. I also am not good at 'elbow grease' as I have bad joints so a regular bleach makes me feel better Grin

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 02/01/2016 21:55

I only use bleach for the toilet & plug holes (if needed).

I can't stand the smell either. It makes me retch.

foragogo · 02/01/2016 21:56

I love bleach. I use it for most of my cleaning and much prefer it to all that horrible fake perfumed flash and cleaners and air fresheners. Its better for the environment than all that perfumed stuff, in moderate quantities. Bleach seems really harmful as the bleaching effect is so dramatic but its really only chloride ions which are easily diluted away, rather than all kinds of complex chemicals in cleaners and detergents which are much harder to break down, if I remember my university Chemistry correctly.

TooSassy · 02/01/2016 21:56

Ooooo. I bleach.

Used in toilets
Down plug holes
To wash the kitchen bin once in a while
A drop put in hot water with a drop of washing up liquid gives all the kitchen cloths a uber good clean

Did you know you can also put a tiny bit in your flowers (especially roses) and prevents bacteria growth/ extends flower life

Like I said I likes my bleach. Grin

dodobookends · 02/01/2016 21:57

DyslexicScientist mentions hydrogen peroxide. Just thought I'd mention that regular everyday household bleach is sodium hypochlorite, not hydrogen peroxide.

foragogo · 02/01/2016 21:59

I put it in with cut flowers too
