about leaving bagged dog poo to collect later?

I am partially sighted and have recently (a few months ago) got my first guide dog. We have a routine where he 'spends' (i.e. poos) at home before we go out. He needs to go twice in the morning.

Occasionally he's not ready to do his second one before we set off on the school run, or occasionally needs to do an 'extra' one. It happened quite often when I first got him, but as we've settled into the routine it's only occasional - it happened last week, but hadn't happened for over a month before that.

Anyway, when that happens, I bag up the poo and leave it out of the way, up against the wall, to collect on my way home. There are no bins on the way to school (residential streets) and I can't take it into school with me. I always take careful note of where I place it (as my sight's not good enough to just notice it on the way back), and I always collect it on the way back.

On Thursday there was a dog walker coming past when I was bagging up the poo and putting it against the wall. The DC said that he stared at me and said something but they didn't hear exactly what he'd said. I didn't notice him.

On my way back, the poo bag wasn't there. I know it definitely was missing and not just me not seeing it, because DC2 was with me (not well enough to go to school but had to walk with us). I am now a bit worried that the dog walker (or someone else) thought I was just abandoning the bag!

AIBU for bagging and leaving to collect on return? It is always well out of the way tucked in where no-one would accidentally tread on it, and not left for very long.

Yes you are BU, sorry. My mother does this and it drives me crazy. Why can't you just carry it??

Yes, he probably thought you were abandoning it. I wouldn't do this, but then I found a wonderful invention called a Muksak, which is a sealable, smell proof dog poo container. You bag the poo, pop it in the Muksak and it's safely contained till you get to a bin.

I have very strong views on this. On our private estate we pay to have bins emptied which are full of dog poo. Every single week I stop my car and pick up a bag of dog poo (I am not a dog lover but accept they are useful for those with sight issues) and get rid of it. So many people leave it not in the bins. Then fairly often the bins over flow and I get out there and empty them as they are filled so quickly before we have our regular emptying. If it's been raining liquid poo runs out of the bottom and runs into my car. The sooner people exercise their dogs only in their own gardens and ensure no dog mess is on our roads the better.

As for bagging and returning later people have to see the bag in the meantime which looks like litter and in fact might attract a litter fine as there is no law that says if litter is left for 1 hour or whatever you have a defence so I don't think it works. Why not bring double bags so you can carry it around just as I do in the car with the 100x of bags I have to move because of dog walkers making such a mess of our bins and streets?

I make common cause with muslims on this one. Would like the UK rid of all dogs so I am not the best person to answer this but I am certainly not alone.

Yabu from an outsiders point of view. Because how are people to know you are picking it up on the way back?

People do this where I live and don't come back for it and it pisses me off tbh.

Tricky. Leaving bags of poo (and not collecting) is quite common round here. It is rather antisocial, so others may presume that is what you are doing.

I completely get not wanting to carry a bag of poo into school. Can they get a poo bin installed?

It is fairly common practice to do this around me - people often leave bags under bushes. However I think some people think they have just been left - I used to think this before I had a dog and I realised what people were doing.

YABU, sorry. Double/triple bag it, maybe, and carry it in your pocket or hang it off the harness until you can dispose of it? Observers/passers by have no idea you're coming back for it and if you get caught up with something at school, you might get distracted and forget about it. Just as you'd never leave a dirty nappy sitting on a footpath you don't leave dog poo, bagged or unbagged. (I have two dogs, BTW, and have been known to carry bagged poo for several miles before I have been able to dispose of it.)

Sorry but I think yabu. You are basically leaving a bag of dog shit on the floor. How is someone else supposed to know you will collect it later?

Sorry but not everyone collects their poo bags and where I live there is quite a collection waiting for their owners :-(

I drives me mad - especially the people who leave it for later collection and "forget" to pick it up. There are bags that have been left for later collection for weeks.

The other behaviour is where it is carefully bagged and then the bag is thrown over a wall or dropped in a hedge as soon as no one is looking. There is a bag of dog poo that has been caught in a high fence near us for 7 years. I can't be retrieved as it is the fence surrounding the sub station. I feel sorry for all the dog owners who do dispose of it properly as the bad ones give them a bad reputation.

Perhaps I could leave a note on it saying I will be back shortly?

I can't carry it in my hand easily as I need one hand to operate the guide dog harness, and one free for hand signals to the dog. I am carrying a heavy rucksack with the DCs things and mine in it but wouldn't want to squash dog poo inside that, or have it dangling off the outside.

As my guide dog gets more settled with me, it will hopefully only happen on very few and far between occasions.

oh, thank you merry. I always feel very self-conscious when we are stared at, but I realise it is usually people admiring my lovely boy. He is a very beautiful dog :)

Sorry but I think doing this gives dog walkers a bad name. I just carry it until.I get home or find a bin. Much better than not picking up at all though.

I also love guide dogs Smile But sadly, they're not trained to poo any less offensively than other dogs.

They are trained/have a routine to poo at home, Elphaba - but they are not robots, and sometimes a call of nature will come at an awkward time!

At least OP is bagging the poo; I live in a village which has literally dozens of bins for dog waste yet people let their dogs crap on the pavement and leave it there. And this is supposed to be a nice area Angry

OP - do you think the man noticed you had sight problems and picked up the bag to help you?

Just been to see the guide dogs near me and although there taught to spend before they work they said the owner doesnt always pick up the poo and in fact doesnt have to as they cant see it. Very kind of you to bag it. Agree with others re others thinking bags were abandoned. I bet the other dog owner was admiring your guide dog. X
