about leaving bagged dog poo to collect later?

I am partially sighted and have recently (a few months ago) got my first guide dog. We have a routine where he 'spends' (i.e. poos) at home before we go out. He needs to go twice in the morning.

Occasionally he's not ready to do his second one before we set off on the school run, or occasionally needs to do an 'extra' one. It happened quite often when I first got him, but as we've settled into the routine it's only occasional - it happened last week, but hadn't happened for over a month before that.

Anyway, when that happens, I bag up the poo and leave it out of the way, up against the wall, to collect on my way home. There are no bins on the way to school (residential streets) and I can't take it into school with me. I always take careful note of where I place it (as my sight's not good enough to just notice it on the way back), and I always collect it on the way back.

On Thursday there was a dog walker coming past when I was bagging up the poo and putting it against the wall. The DC said that he stared at me and said something but they didn't hear exactly what he'd said. I didn't notice him.

On my way back, the poo bag wasn't there. I know it definitely was missing and not just me not seeing it, because DC2 was with me (not well enough to go to school but had to walk with us). I am now a bit worried that the dog walker (or someone else) thought I was just abandoning the bag!

AIBU for bagging and leaving to collect on return? It is always well out of the way tucked in where no-one would accidentally tread on it, and not left for very long.

Rita - yes, that is possible. I had taken my dog's white harness off to allow him to relieve himself in the gutter (not on the pavement!) but it was hanging over my shoulder. Plus the DC say they've seen him quite often on our school run. So he might have been being thoughtful. I hope he would know that I am coming back for it.

It's carrying it that is the issue. I am quite heavily laden on the school run, and don't have a spare hand because I need the other hand free for hand signals. There is no bin until I get home again.

Why not get a plastic tub, double bag and then put the bag in the tub to put in your backpack until you get to a bin? It's more hassle, but you really can't leave it waiting for you for all the reasons stated previously.

ElphabaTheGreen · 14/06/2015 08:06

Oh, I know the timing of the poo is trained unlike my infuriating poo-monsters but the poo itself is, nonetheless, poo and not nice for anyone.

merrymouse · 14/06/2015 08:06

Squiggly it's from the 'Parks and Recreation' TV show - the classic dog poop fight scene.

exLtEveDallasNoBollocks · 14/06/2015 08:07

OP you need a Paws 4 Design rucksack. It's a normal rucksack (so you can still use it for you and DCs) but it has a detachable 'dog poo pocket' that you could use instead of leaving it. www.paws4designs.co.uk/index.php

My friend and I have had them for a couple of years now and they are still going strong. We've never had an 'accident' with them either Smile

SquigglyLine · 14/06/2015 08:08

Oh I love parks & rec merry, but I don't know that scene. Will watch out for it!

Agree with, merry - people are looking at your dog, not you, so please don't feel self-conscious. I have never had so many admiring glances in my life since acquiring our stunning greyhound Grin

SquigglyLine · 14/06/2015 08:09

I'll look at that rucksack ex.

Maybe a stupid question, bu why don't your dc carry their own bags, or carry the dog poo bag? Find it had to believe there isn't a bin at school.

SquigglyLine · 14/06/2015 08:14

Dc very young, gin, and bags are heavy for them. I would never give them a full dog poo bag to carry.

It is not at all a regular occurrence.

One of those baby bottle cooler padded plastic bags is handly to put unexpected poo bags in. We take one walking with us so we can hook it to the outside of a rucksack or put it inside all sealed up.
They do special dog poo ones but they are pricey and basically the same thing.

HoboMum · 14/06/2015 08:29

Wow I think people are forgetting that you have more difficulty with this than your average dog owner OP. I think your idea of leaving a note on it would be perfect. If he wasn't a guide dog I would say YABU but you are definitely not being unreasonable!

Yes, I think YABU.

I don't think it's OK to leave dog mess in the street for any amount of time- bagged or not.

BrendaBlackhead · 14/06/2015 08:49

I recommend Pets At Home extra heavy duty poo bags. I have a big dog who does big poos. These bags are strong and when tied up no odour escapes. Bags are big enough to dangle from wrist or somewhere, leaving actually hands free.

I don't care about brands, but I will not compromise on Lurpak, Taylors of Harrogate coffee or Pets At Home poo bags!

HawkEyeTheNoo · 14/06/2015 08:52

I don't think YABU, due to the circumstances but I can understand how others might before you have explained to them you are collecting it later. A note is probably a good idea. What I'm astounded at is the pp saying all dogs should be banned in the uk! Ok then so guide dogs and service dogs should be banned then...... Riiiiiight. Confused

CaTsMaMmA · 14/06/2015 08:57

the best dog bag I have is a brabantia peg bag, it's quite large, cylindrical in shape, with a drawstring fabric lid and in a nylon polyester stiff fabric that holds its shape

it has a carabena to hook it on to clothes or pockets or even the dog, and loads of room inside for poo bags, full or empty.

Aside from that I often collect poobags on the way back or next day if I have gone on a round walk, but we are very isolated here so it is mostly only us or the neighbours, so sometimes people collect as they go!

Lonecatwithkitten · 14/06/2015 09:02

I often walk where the nearest bin can be miles away do I have ones

waceystills · 14/06/2015 09:03

My friend took her dog for a walk in her way to vote in the general a few weeks ago. He did a poo, she then bagged it to carry home later.

All she knows is she didn't have the poo bag when she got home. She thinks she probably left it in the voting cubicle when she voted Grin

Would have been better on this occasion if she did leave it to pick up on the way home. Still not wise though. Bag and carry everytime!

Stealthfart · 14/06/2015 09:12

YANBU. I collect on the way home as a) the bin is usually back behind me over a canal swing bridge and a road so I would have to drag my geriatric dog backwards and forwards, mostly with a small person in tow. And b) I really object to carrying faeces whilst walking with my children. I leave it off the path where I will not forget it, I never have done. So there.

Yanbu. As long as you def remember to pick it up, I don't see the problem. Usual dog poo hysteria here! Also, am I correct in thinking you are actually legally allowed to not pick up your dog poo, being registered partially sighted with a guide dog? Remember a dog poo patrol warden telling me that.

TimeToDecide · 14/06/2015 09:27

YANBU. I hope the man was helping you. From what I understand guide dog owners aren't obliged to pick up after guide dogs at all. It's only there for a short time, it's bagged and you are taking it home. If you feel better leaving a note then of course do so. I can't even imagine the juggle of holding a dog, signalling to a dog, having DC's, all the school bags, and having a smelly dog poo bag swinging around into the mix as well. Some people on here should be ashamed of their comments. It's a guide dog!

lambsie · 14/06/2015 09:30

I don't like dog poo bags being left as ds who has sn tries to pick them up/ mess with them. If I saw the op doing it I would understand but most people who do it are being inconsiderate.

floatyflo · 14/06/2015 09:32

I make common cause with muslims on this one. Would like the UK rid of all dogs so I am not the best person to answer this but I am certainly not alone.

Eh?! What an odd thing to post Confused
