To think I can write a 2000 word assignment before Monday?

Me and the dc have been plagued with illness, and now I have 4 days to get this done.

Don't know much about the subject area so will involve a fair bit of reading.

Please tell me your stories of how you started an 8000 word assignment the night before and got a first, or suchlike.

Although, to be fair, a 40% pass would be fine. First year of my degree so it's not the end of the world.

I may be procrastinating by writing this thread.

There you go then!

Go away and argue it. (I'm being bossy, I know)

Good luck. Smile

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 03/06/2015 23:15

Go me, LEM. Does that mean I can give myself a pat on the back and go to sleep now?

snowglobemouse · 03/06/2015 23:16

course you can! I wrote my 15000 word dissertation in a week! I won't lie, it was fucking horrific and I wanted to pack it all in and run away but after it was done, I didn't care. I got a first

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 03/06/2015 23:17

I love mumsnet. What a heart warming bunch you are. This was not an hour of procrastination, I have gone from blind panic to feeling fully in control of this shit.

In fact, I may have time to do a bit of candy crushing.

Go!!! Blush

sadwidow28 · 03/06/2015 23:22

Oh Wow LFC - now where shall we start? You are in my subject area!

  1. Set out your case that education raises children from working class to middle class/ and from middle class to upper class through boarding school.
  1. Show how parents have seen education as an aspirational challenge for their children. (North Riding of Yorkshire - Parental Choice) - Newsom Report 1963
  1. Local Authority catchment areas have created 'sin-bin schools' because catchment areas are based on housing and locality. Affluent parents will move house to get into the correct catchment areas. Less-affluent parents don't have this choice. (cf Trafford LA in NWest which still has Grammar schools) ergo, rich areas don't have 'sin bin schools' because those parents would simply remove children to boarding schools (cf Buckinghamshire, Berkshire in S England)
  1. As exemplars, look at the education of the current Wesminster Cabinet and see how many are from Boarding School background.

Ok, I'm going!

I'll be bright eyed and and bushy tailed in the morning ready for a day of essay writing.

Thanks for all your help, everyone.

bar my 20,000 word dissertation i started every essay at around 11pm the night before it was due at uni. all 2 - 3k words and passed every one with a 2:1 overall - always in on time too. it's not an approach I would advocate now that I'm older and wiser but you will be fine. feel better soon!

BertieBotts · 03/06/2015 23:32

NO candy crushing! Uninstall the app! You can put it back when you hand in the essay!

Hope you sleep well :)

elephantfeet · 03/06/2015 23:36

I wrote a 15,000 word dissertation in 4 days (without any sleep - would not recommend that!) and did pretty well. I think you can do 2000 words, if you had someone to watch the dcs that would be even better Smile

a1992 · 03/06/2015 23:39

Aermingers I seriously dislike your implication their my fiancé is a plumber and works his arse off, to make sure everything right, he does not just make money because he can lift heavy stuff.

Defiantly reference as you go along, and right quotes as you read can be a pain trying to find the quote you are thinking of in a time crunch.

Bellebella · 03/06/2015 23:42

your essay titles are easy ones, is that at university? I have just finished a degree in sociology and media studies and mine were a lot harder than that. Envy

You can easily get it done, I would suggest however you get the reading done in plenty of time. It's not the writing of the essay that is difficult but the readings and planning. With children it's essential to organise yourself and it really is easier to get a essay done in limited time if you have already got the bulk of the plan done. I learnt that quickly when both myself and my son got ill over the autumn term deadlines.

Luisanna · 03/06/2015 23:49

Oh gawwwd, all this, I did my 15000 essay in 3 days, makes me want to vom! I'm sure you all did and hats off to you all. But this is my worse nightmare. I've done the essay under pressure and yes it can be done, but it isn't a ride in the park! You need to get off mumsnet and get it done and never, ever let this happen again! It's hideous, I've been there, hideous!

Aermingers · 03/06/2015 23:51

Okay. They can lift heavy stuff and work a stopcock. My husband's a builder. I never said people in manual professions didn't work hard. But in general there are manual professions that you can become very, very well paid at even if you are not academically talented and don't have particularly high standards of literacy and numeracy. My husband's best mate is a crane driver. He's thick as pigshit, can barely write, thought until after the election that we'd had a Labour government for the last five years and thought Joan of Arc was the bird from the Indiana Jones film and he clears £60k a year.

My point is that there are professions that people who have not done well academically and who may well be 'lads' can be very well paid in indeed.

And plumbers do lift heavy stuff, have you ever tried lugging a carsy up three flights of stairs? It's not bloody easy.

insanityscatching · 03/06/2015 23:53

Ds has almost completed his Masters whilst working FT alongside a second part time job and tutoring on the side and hasn't started any of his dissertations until about 36 hours before they were due to be submitted and he's got merits all the way. He's yet to think about his final 11000 word dissertation due in next month but he'll be fine. He works well under pressure. Once you start you'll wonder why you've been worried I'm sure. Good luck.

TwinkieTwinkle · 04/06/2015 00:00

Did a similar essay in four hours. Instead of being worried about the time and procrastinating on mumsnet just do it! You'll be amazed how quickly you can get through essays when you actively put a stop to procrastination.

sugarplumpfairy · 04/06/2015 01:13

If it's any consolation - I did it in a day/night non stop in a filthy dressing gown on a bottle of wine Smile BUT the DC's were at their dads for that weekend so that seemed to be the only time I had (of course it wasn't) I am a terrible procrastinator and leave everything to the last minute, always been the same. Good luck and hope you get it done.

SusanIvanova · 04/06/2015 01:22

I wrote my dissertation in 9 and a half hours. I got a 2:1. I also would not recommend doing that.

Sturgill123 · 04/06/2015 02:16

As long as you lay off Candy Crush you'll be fine!

nemo81 · 04/06/2015 05:24

In January i wrote a 4000 word essay in 3 nights! Shock I got a first too. Was very shocked.

tobysmum77 · 04/06/2015 05:39

of course you can eeaasy....

lavendersun · 04/06/2015 05:43

LittleFluffy - I have exactly the same thing to do before Monday. I finished something else late on Tuesday eve, lectures yesterday and now I need to write something else - I have not even opened one of the many books on the book list or even started to research the geographical area I need to write about.

The word count is fairly small though when compared to the nightmare I have just finshed.

I am planning on 5 hours today, same tomorrow and Sunday (out on Saturday), could have same on Monday I suppose as am uploading it.
