To think I can write a 2000 word assignment before Monday?

Me and the dc have been plagued with illness, and now I have 4 days to get this done.

Don't know much about the subject area so will involve a fair bit of reading.

Please tell me your stories of how you started an 8000 word assignment the night before and got a first, or suchlike.

Although, to be fair, a 40% pass would be fine. First year of my degree so it's not the end of the world.

I may be procrastinating by writing this thread.

Easy least. Can be done in a few hours. I never started any essay until the night before it was due or the morning of the day it was due Blush you can read and write the essay in a day if you need to.

Don't panic. Last minute is fairly normal Grin

sadwidow28 · 03/06/2015 22:59

Tell me the tile of your assignment and I'll get you started.....

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 03/06/2015 23:00

No LEM, I'm not saying that. I'm using a Marxist perspective to explain how, due to the inequalities of education (richer areas = better schools etc), and the way the working class are disproportionately represented in the lower streams and sets, that working class kids are statistically more likely to leave school with few qualifications. Referring back to paul Willis' study on working class lads, and saying how the 'lad culture' of messing about and not taking it seriously prepares them for a life in crap jobs, like factory work. And more stuff that I don't know yet.

What subject is it?

TheWintersmith · 03/06/2015 23:02

Another one signing in to say Monday is aaages away.

The slow bit is reading up, oh and cutting the 3500 word caffeine fuelled lunacy you did back down to 2000 sensible words.

sadwidow28 · 03/06/2015 23:02

I am crawling this thread like a school ma'am - looking out to see if OP is being dilatory or if she needs additional help.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 03/06/2015 23:02

That sounds great.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 03/06/2015 23:03

See the first page of the thread, Aermingers. I posted the assignment questions there. It's sociology.

Google Scholar is brill!! It's basically a way to SEARCH all indexed academic journals and many many scanned books, too. You can add your university login to it (somehow, I can't remember offhand, ask your library, or I suppose, google it) and it will then search not only generally open things, but anything your institution has a subscription to.

I used a combination of the fact that our library scanned everything on the essential reading list, (utter brilliance) every other book I could get my hands on an electronic copy of on the list, and google scholar for 99% of my references, background reading and essays. I was studying mostly from home with a young toddler, so I didn't have loads of time in the library to trawl through actual books. Being able to use the search function saved so much time, and I did read the actual articles too (I kept getting distracted by interesting bits Grin) - it's a combination of being able to go right to parts which are relevant, search out relevant articles by keyword or title, and remembering a quote but having no idea what page it was on.

Aermingers · 03/06/2015 23:04

That's bollocks. All the lads I know who pissed about at school do plumbing or are chippies or brickies or drive cranes and earn £££ coz they're good at lifting heavy stuff even if they're not brainy.

WanderWomble · 03/06/2015 23:05

I can type 2k words in an hour. Most I've written in one day is 15k words. You can do it- make an outline, breaking larger points down into smaller ones and cross them off as you go. Good luck!

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 03/06/2015 23:05

Thanks Jeanne. I do a good impression of sounding like I know what I'm on about sometimes.

I did get a first in my psychology exam though just watching a 45 minute DVD on attachment theory, and not picking up a single book, so anything is possible I guess.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 03/06/2015 23:06

It's not bollocks, aer, and even if it were, it's highly unlikely her tutor is going to respond like that, isn't it?!

If you had a proper argument you'd make it.

ChopinLiszt · 03/06/2015 23:07

I once wrote a 10,000w dissertation in a weekend. The same weekend we moved house..... I got 55%

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 03/06/2015 23:07

It matters not if its bollcks, Aermingers.

As long as I can reference people who say it's not bollocks.

I wrote a five thousand word essay for a notional masters-level qualification in a morning, and (scraped) a pass. I don't recommend this, and re-reading it wasn't pretty.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 03/06/2015 23:10

God Chopin, bet that was a fun weekend.

I gave birth and moved house in the same weekend once, good times.

OP posts:
JeanneDeMontbaston · 03/06/2015 23:10

It does matter if it's bollocks. If you don't believe it's true you won't be able to defend it ... can you?

(And yes, anything is possible. Smile)

Aermingers · 03/06/2015 23:11

'That's bollocks, they might not be brainy but they can lift heavy stuff' (Aermingers, Mumsnet, 2015, accessed 3rd June).

See you can copy and paste that right in. You don't need to thank me. Just promise me a name check when you make your speech collecting a Nobel prize off the back of that little gem, okay?

Szeli · 03/06/2015 23:11

My disertation was done the night before but only 5k words and I got a first.

I physically cannot do any essays any earlier than 2 days before - my brain just wont let me. you'll be grand!

TheoriginalLEM · 03/06/2015 23:12

see :) you have just written your introduction ;)

Aermingers · 03/06/2015 23:12

Anyway, you're doing what I do. Sitting procrastinating on Mumsnet when you should be writing a bleedin' essay innit! Grin

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 03/06/2015 23:12

I believe it's true Jeanne, yes. Marxist through and through, me.

OP posts:
JeanneDeMontbaston · 03/06/2015 23:13

Grin Nice try, Aerm. Aside from the obvious, I remember being surprised our copyright belongs to MN here.

HelenF350 · 03/06/2015 23:13

Yanbu, I wrote my 10,000 word dissertation in 3 days. I wouldn't recommend it but it can be done! ??
