To think I can write a 2000 word assignment before Monday?

Me and the dc have been plagued with illness, and now I have 4 days to get this done.

Don't know much about the subject area so will involve a fair bit of reading.

Please tell me your stories of how you started an 8000 word assignment the night before and got a first, or suchlike.

Although, to be fair, a 40% pass would be fine. First year of my degree so it's not the end of the world.

I may be procrastinating by writing this thread.

Ooo I used to love sociology!

How about looking at education from the perspective of a functionalist. It's sooo interesting.

There are a few theories to discuss such as about education being a meritocracy, those who work the hardest can achieve anything etc I think it was Emile Durkheim who said that but can't be sure.

I'm doing several different courses of study and for 6 weeks running I had either a 3 hour exam or a 2/3000 word essay due every single week. I was also working FT around 50 hours a week.

Biggest thing is know what you are writing about. Read read read. Take notes. Make a mind map. Take references as you go.

Then I usually put on a piece of classical music that lasts about 2 hours and get cracking. It usually takes me about 1.5 playthroughs :)

FaFoutis · 03/06/2015 22:40

I'm a lecturer, not yours though!
4 days is ages. Read for 2, think and plan for 1 and write for 1.

Under pressure is the optimum way of doing things for some people. Every undergraduate essay I did was written overnight - the night before the deadline - plenty of my students are the same.

Aermingers · 03/06/2015 22:40

Have you done the reading already? You should be able to bash out 2500 over the wknd if so. Can DH do all the childcare all weekend? Can you get an extension?

CalleighDoodle · 03/06/2015 22:41

I would always write a 2000 word assignment in an evening, reading as i went along.

ItsAllAnAct · 03/06/2015 22:42

2000 words can be done in a day once you have done your reading. Good luck OP

User100 · 03/06/2015 22:42

If you have DCs this weekend I'd aim to get it done by then. You have tomorrow and the first couple of hours in Friday to read by which time you should know what argument you want to make. Write it on Friday and it leaves Sat/Sun eve to proofread and perfect it. The motivation of a weekend with DCs can be a reason to work to. First tip though is go to bed now if you're not going to start reading now!

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 03/06/2015 22:44

Easy, I wrote my 8-9000 word dissertation in less than 8 hours, start to finish, all nighter. And passed. Shouldn't brag, would have achieved a far better grade if I had started sooner, but by that stage I had all but given up. However, even if you do it in parts, 750 words a day, then the final day for look over and bibliography, should be more than manageable in my opinion.

EmmaLL25 · 03/06/2015 22:45

I wrote my undergraduate dissertation pretty much in a day. I'd done the reading but I wrote 7,000 of the 10,000 words the day before it was due. Only slept 3 hrs right enough but it got a B.

You'll be fine. I'd do two days of reading and 2 days of writing.

If you can get away to a library to
Avoid procrastinating maybe a plan.

Good luck.

MairzyDoats · 03/06/2015 22:45

If I were you, I'd use the best day (tomorrow) to write all of it as a rough draft, and then just keep polishing it on Friday/weekend until it's perfect. Don't procrastinate tomorrow!

TheoriginalLEM · 03/06/2015 22:45

Too bloody right im bragging!! I would not however recommend it!

Aermingers · 03/06/2015 22:45

It's no use now, but if you are continuing studying maybe consider learning to touch type in the summer? It really does save loads of time.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 03/06/2015 22:46

I'm a single parent so no chance of offloading the dc.

The hardest bit is thinking of the titles. I know most about education so I think I'll do that for the first section. It has to be specific though, for example my friend did 'is education used by capitalists to dominate the working classes?'. She got a first. I was thinking something along the lines of 'does education prepare the working classes for a life of unskilled employment?' Maybe????? And use conflict theory with the metaphor of a machine.

Definitely do references as you go! Nothing worse than thinking you're done then spending two hours pulling together a reference list!

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 03/06/2015 22:48

My typing is pretty speedy (not on this bloody ipad though). Years of inane office work to thank for that!

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 03/06/2015 22:48

Yep I always do references as I go. With my goldfish memory I'd be screwed if I didnt.

Right here's my inspiring story Grin

Two weeks after DD was born I wrote the final essay of my second year of uni (decided not to take any time out because I was a silly twat). 4,000 words. Due to obvious giving birth-ness, I finished the essay the night before it was due in.

Word crashed and corrupted the file, every word had been converted into the # symbol. Re-wrote it two more times, both times it happened again.

Finally, at 5am, I re-wrote the essay while feeding DD, triple-saved it onto several different devices, printed it off and handed it in.

Got a 2:1.

I have never been more relieved to see the back of an essay Grin

jorahmormont · 03/06/2015 22:52

You can do it!!!

JeanneDeMontbaston · 03/06/2015 22:53

little, keep in mind that it's not the question on its own that matters - it's how well you answer it: ie., how precisely you relate your answer to each important word in it, how clearly you define your terms.

The question ought to have terms in it that really clarify to you what is important - and you should be able, then, to say why those things are important.

TheoriginalLEM · 03/06/2015 22:53

So are you saying that education is wasted on the working class? Wink or lets down the working classes? Surely education is the ticket out of the unskilled employment?

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 03/06/2015 22:55

I am truly inspired, jorah! I haven't given birth for nearly 5 years so I have no excuse really.

OP, If you are still on this thread and not writing that assignment then I will suggest that you are prevaricating!

It's 8 sides of A4 hand-written.

  1. Title
  2. Introduction/background to the topic
  3. Discussion (remember to ref anyone you quote)
  • you may have to write both sides of the discussion (check your assignment)
  1. Conclusion/Summary
giraffesCantPluckTheirEyebrows · 03/06/2015 22:57

yes for sure :)

Gabilan · 03/06/2015 22:57

I wrote two 4000 word masters essays over 4 days once. I had done some of the reading but had a fair bit more reading and all the writing to do.

Got distinctions for both of them.

I would think your main problem with 2k words will be staying within the word count. It's not very long.

jorahmormont · 03/06/2015 22:58

Anything can be used as an excuse as long as you're really convincing about it Grin

It's like the old saying goes - 'Every size pizza is a personal pizza if you try hard and believe in yourself' Grin
