We will be going away on our family holiday soon. We are all bookworms so will be equipped with lots of reading material. However, over the years we have developed a tradition of taking a box set of something to watch in the evenings (We always rent a self catering property).

There are three of us - DH, DD and I. DD is 19.

In the past we have all enjoyed:

Life on Mars
Spooks
Buffy
Dexter
Firefly
Sherlock
Game of Thrones

We are trying to think of something for this holiday that we have never seen but potentially would all like. Can anyone suggest any good TV series we might not have thought of?

We're currently watching misfits. The beginning was better than the middle (where we are) but it is entertaining and I enjoyed a lot of your list

saoirse31 · 25/05/2015 14:36

walking dead

LeBearPolar · 25/05/2015 14:37

I love Buffy, Sherlock and GoT off your list so you might like some of mine!

The Mentalist
House
Castle
Person of Interest
Bones

  • all US TV series with a crime-solving theme.

Elementary is a MUST - US version of the Sherlock Holmes stories, set in modern day, Jonny Lee Miller as Holmes and Lucy Liu as Watson. I was sceptical but it is fab.

We have also enjoyed:
Rome
The Musketeers

and I love The Vampire Diaries Blush but DH can take it or leave it.

Am assuming that you've tried Angel given that you've watched Buffy?

LeBearPolar · 25/05/2015 14:38

House obv not a crime-solving theme but you know what I mean - mystery of the week sort of thing!

WishUponAStar88 · 25/05/2015 14:39

My favourites have been:

  • Walking dead (thought I'd hate but love love love!)
  • Bones
  • Breaking bad
  • Prison break
  • big bang theory (prefer initial few series to newer ones)
Theycallmemellowjello · 25/05/2015 14:39

Shows I've found really amazing are house of cards (us version), true detective, the wire and twin peaks. On a second tier I'd put the killing (Danish version) and the sopranos. Breaking bad is also great.

Theycallmemellowjello · 25/05/2015 14:40

Ooh and arrested development for comedy!

ghostyslovesheep · 25/05/2015 14:41

The Bridge (original version not the shit English remake)

ghostyslovesheep · 25/05/2015 14:42

Friday Night Dinner for comedy

Ludways · 25/05/2015 14:43

Breaking Bad
Walking Dead
Being Hunan
Sons of Anarchy

MyCatIsAGit · 25/05/2015 14:43

House of cards!

SmartAlecMetalGit · 25/05/2015 14:43

Carnivàle, it's absolutely brilliant and never shows up often enough on box set recommendation threads Grin

mumtoaninja · 25/05/2015 14:45

Breaking Bad...I very rarely watch 'binge' shows but was hooked on this!

BorisBaby · 25/05/2015 14:46

Walking dead
Orange is the new black
Raising hope

workingdilemma · 25/05/2015 14:47

Angel (As you've watched Buffy, you should watch this too)
The Wire
Curb your Enthusiasm
Seinfeld
Breaking Bad
The Bridge (Danish/Swedish version)
The Killing (Danish version)
Nip/Tuck

Rugbylovingmum · 25/05/2015 14:49

The Sopranos, Elementary or House of Cards. Wasn't a fan of a Breaking Bad or Misfits. I love the idea of a holiday box set btw. The kids are a big young to join us but DP and I would enjoy it. We take films but then we can never shred on which one to watch.

Monica101 · 25/05/2015 14:50

The Scandinavian stuff if you are ok with subtitles;

The Bridge
The Killing
Arne Dahl
Wallander

More light weight stuff like;

Angel (if you liked Buffy it's just the same and as good)

Or some of the classic long running shows like

Sopranos
6 Feet Under

SweetDreamsAndFlyingMachines · 25/05/2015 14:53

Friday Night Lights - but be warned it is incredibly addictive Grin

blue42 · 25/05/2015 14:53

Breaking Bad
True Detective

I'm not a big tv watcher but both of those had us hooked.

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 25/05/2015 14:55

Orphan Black, amazing BBC drama, made in Canada. Has a sci-fi element if that's your thing, quite action packed as well. I'm just recommending this in general, everyone should give it a go!

Walking dead is good, can be a bit slow at times but plot is generally solid.

Orange is the New Black - just watched this myself, a bit if a slow starter but worth the effort. I think it's only on Netflix though.

Breaking Bad - again, slow starter, but really is worth sticking with. It's not overhyped at all.

WeirdCatLady · 25/05/2015 14:58

Elementary

YouTheCat · 25/05/2015 14:58

Once upon a time

Currently watching X files.

AWimbaWay · 25/05/2015 15:01

From your list I have really enjoyed Dexter, Firefly, Sherlock and Game of Thrones so think we probably have similar taste.

Think you would really enjoy The Walking Dead and Battlestar Galactica.

contractor6 · 25/05/2015 15:04

Brothers and sisters
Alias

SecretSquirrels · 25/05/2015 15:04

I have older teens and we like a good box set. Some of those you list are quite violent and wouldn't suit me but on the basis of those Walking Dead would fit the bill.
Currently we are watching Suits. Other favourites include;
The Good Wife
Scandal
Bones (maybe a little tame after Dexter)
Lost
Greys Anatomy - trashy but addictive.
