We will be going away on our family holiday soon. We are all bookworms so will be equipped with lots of reading material. However, over the years we have developed a tradition of taking a box set of something to watch in the evenings (We always rent a self catering property).

There are three of us - DH, DD and I. DD is 19.

In the past we have all enjoyed:

Life on Mars
Spooks
Buffy
Dexter
Firefly
Sherlock
Game of Thrones

We are trying to think of something for this holiday that we have never seen but potentially would all like. Can anyone suggest any good TV series we might not have thought of?

Rev
Last tango in Halifax
Father Brown
Jam and Jerusalem

Fringe!! You must watch Fringe. It's my favourite thing ever, and I love everything you posted, except GoT.

Firefly, Sherlock and Fringe fans also often like Supernatural. I wasn't keen on the premise of the monster hunting, but the characterisation is great and really makes it as a series.

I don't know if Orphan Black is on DVD but that is amazing too.

nequidnimis · 25/05/2015 15:18

Some great suggestions and the only things I can add are Battlestar Galactica (modern not 1970s!) and American Horror Story.

Would second True Detective, Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, Carnivale.

maitaimojito · 25/05/2015 15:21

Prison break is one of my favourites.

NKfell · 25/05/2015 15:23

Ashes to Ashes
American Horror Story
Last Tango in Halifax
Nip/Tuck

I enjoyed them all... Smile

anotherdayanothername1 · 25/05/2015 15:23

I fourth The Bridge 1, and 2

RubieWoo · 25/05/2015 15:24

May I suggest Monk? The OCD detective, played by Tony Shaloub who always solves the most difficult crimes in San Francisco. I miss that show! It's quite hilarious too.

I would certainly give the first two seasons of The West Wing a go (you can ignore the other seasons.

If it's out on DVD yet then Fortitude was brilliant, but a bit frustrating. I would also suggest The Sopranos, but that will be an investment :)

KumquatMay · 25/05/2015 16:01

We LOVE Castle (has Nathan Fillion from Firefly in so you might like that too!). Funny, dramatic, mysterious - absolutely brilliant.

Also;

  • Modern Family
  • Desperate Housewives (DH loves this too)
  • Suits (v. stylish and engaging)
OhMySaintedTrousers · 25/05/2015 16:06

Since you liked Dexter, I definitely recommend Six Feet Under. It's a very original, thought-provoking, well made, and well written series with a very interesting group of characters. It also has Michael C Hall in a leading role, and once you've seen Six Feet you'll recognise lots of homages to it in Dexter.

A bit of a "wild card", but have you ever seen Daria? I have the whole lot on DVD and love them, as does DH. It's a very witty, fun, and light-hearted but thought-provoking animated series, albeit not dramatic or gripping in any way!

PattiODoors · 25/05/2015 16:09

Hamish McBeth

Curve ball suggestion would be Blue Planet

MardyBra · 25/05/2015 16:16

Why is this in Aibu?

ihatethecold · 25/05/2015 16:24

We love 24.
Can't get enough of Jack Bauer.

5Foot5 · 25/05/2015 16:52

Wow. So many suggestions already.

DH and I have seen bits of Walking Dead and Raising Hope; we have all seen all of Rome, the Musketeers, Big Bang Theory, Being Human, Ashes to Ashes; DD has probably seen all of House and Modern Family. Which goes to show I think that we are on the same wavelength as many of you Grin

However, loads of brilliant suggestions I hadn't thought of.

Thank you so much to you all for taking the trouble to reply. I shall show this thread to the others and start to compile a short list.

Keep them coming!!

Almost forgot! American Horror Story, there are four seasons that use the same actors but in different 'roles' each time. Quite unique, and Jessica Lange is amazing. Asylum (season 2) is probably the best, but none are really weak. It's most certainly on Netflix (seasons 1-3), not sure about DVD box sets.

putthePuffindown · 25/05/2015 17:06

Breaking Bad
True Detective
The young doctors notebook
Bates Motel
The Borgias
House

Not quite as good, but v.entertaining (if a bit cheesy!):
Person of interest
Monk
Spartacus

NotOneIota · 25/05/2015 17:10

Prison Break is edge of the seat stuff, I'm also a big fan of Burn Notice.
Community is light hearted and funny.

flashheartscanoe · 25/05/2015 17:24

Brooklyn 99
We took it on our last holiday and it was a hit. Not intense drama, stupid laugh out load humour- ideal for a holiday.

saoirse31 · 25/05/2015 17:49

Yes American horror story is v good

butternut22 · 25/05/2015 17:51

True Blood

Magicpinkshadow · 25/05/2015 18:13

24 i find I highly addictive!

littlewoollypervert · 25/05/2015 18:21

Rake (the Australian one) It's on Netflix and I've never seen it mentioned on here, I watched it by accident, it's brilliant.
Orphan Black as well, plus Person of Interest - I've just seen the end of a particular series which seemed to finish it off, I don't want to google it in case it was the end, I'll be very disappointed!

flora717 · 25/05/2015 18:33

Spaced (old I know) - also Black Books.
Castle; Chuck; Dollhouse?

TidyDancer · 25/05/2015 19:14

The Walking Dead, definitely.
