We will be going away on our family holiday soon. We are all bookworms so will be equipped with lots of reading material. However, over the years we have developed a tradition of taking a box set of something to watch in the evenings (We always rent a self catering property).

There are three of us - DH, DD and I. DD is 19.

In the past we have all enjoyed:

Life on Mars
Spooks
Buffy
Dexter
Firefly
Sherlock
Game of Thrones

We are trying to think of something for this holiday that we have never seen but potentially would all like. Can anyone suggest any good TV series we might not have thought of?

What's rake about?

GypsyFloss · 25/05/2015 19:38

My absolute favourite is The Wire, followed pretty closely by the West Wing.

alsmutko · 25/05/2015 19:48

The Wire
Fringe
True Detective
Castle
Battlestar Galactica

Some of my all-time favourites!

19lottie82 · 25/05/2015 19:59

To the poster who suggested Orange is the new black........ The OP says she has a 19 year old daughter. As much as I love that show, There is now way in hell I would want to watch that with my mother and even less so when I was 19!

Mousefinkle · 25/05/2015 21:33

Fringe!

I'm not easily impressed at all but that series had me hooked, I'm gutted it's over Sad. Plus the late great Leonard Nimoy guest starred so if that's not a reason enough to watch I don't know what is.

tiggy2610 · 25/05/2015 22:00

Prison Break had me hooked and Dh and I have re watched all seasons again and it was still as great!

We'd never heard of it before but DH and I are currently hooked on 'Banshee'. Brilliant American drama, sort of Dexter meets Sons of Anarchy (another top recommendation!) It's on Sky Atlantic and was recommended by a friend, it has received very good reviews online as well as keeping me up until the early hours for the past few nights...Blush

Fluffcake · 25/05/2015 22:36

Glad others have said Fringe. Thought it was great.
Better call Saul, breaking bad, house, the west wing. I also liked White Collar. Seen a couple of episodes of Elementary but it's not on netflixConfused

Fluffcake · 25/05/2015 22:36

And the Goodwife if you're not watching IR on TV. American TV at its best imoGrin

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 25/05/2015 22:39

Would def suggest House but you say DD has seen it.

West Wing technically a bit dated now but really the issues they face are bang up to date.
For a few quid on ebay: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/The-West-Wing-Series-1-DVD-2002-6-Disc-Set-Box-Set-new-and-sealed-/191584658396?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2c9b55e3dc

How could you miss out on dialogue like:

Sam Seaborn: About a week ago I accidentally slept with a prostitute.
Toby Ziegler: [pause] Really?
Sam Seaborn: Yes.
Toby Ziegler: You accidentally slept with a prostitute?
Sam Seaborn: A call girl.
Toby Ziegler: Accidentally?
Sam Seaborn: Yes.
Toby Ziegler: I don't understand. Did you trip over something?

...or the wire. That's good too, but slower moving and the accents are harder to understand.

DampAndRotten · 25/05/2015 22:40

Yy to Friday Night Lights! It's ace.

Breaking Bad or The wire for crime related drama.

TheBobbinIsWound · 25/05/2015 22:40

Breaking Bad
Orange is the New Black
Suits
Archer

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 25/05/2015 22:46

I'd say 24 although it is so addictive, you may not get much else done!

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 25/05/2015 22:46

I would suggest True Blood, but having experienced the excruciating silence when my (Christian) parents and I watched the episode containing the line, 'Never, you bible-banging cunts'... maybe not one for family viewing. Blush

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 25/05/2015 22:47

Not a fan of Breaking Bad, soooooo slow.

FortyFacedFuckers · 25/05/2015 22:54

Prison break gets my vote.

IamnotaStepfordHousewife · 25/05/2015 23:00

A town called Eureka, House and the Mentalist.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/05/2015 23:03

I think I'd enjoy mostof your list. I bought Firefly for DD for her birthday over a year ago but we've still not watched it because I also got her Star Trek (original series) which we've followed with Next Generation, DS9 and currently Enterprise.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 25/05/2015 23:06

The Returned - off beat, slightly spooky, French. Really good stuff.

BertieBotts · 26/05/2015 11:04

Ha! Yes totally true about Orange is the new Black Grin

KatharineClifton · 26/05/2015 11:09

Battlestar Galactica is amazing! You might want to watch Caprica first though - its's not as good but is the prequel. I wouldn't take True Detective on holiday tbh.

yogeek · 26/05/2015 11:17

Broadchurch
Breaking Bad
Green Wing
Endeavor

BitterChocolate · 26/05/2015 11:18

I like a lot of your list and I watched all five series of Fringe over Christmas while the DC were away with their dad. I'd never heard of it before but I loved it, I was completely hooked.
