To ask if anyone has ever had an irrefutable experience with a psychic?

I'm just going to be really honest and say that the reason I'm asking this is because I'm afraid of death. I really want to believe that there is something after death, and so in the past I've thought about speaking to a psychic. If they could tell me one thing - just one thing that couldn't be explained away - I could say to myself 'Ok, there is something else out there' and be content and not let the idea of 'the end' terrify me too much. Yes I should probably seek counseling.

So my question is - does anyone have an irrefutable experience with a psychic - something they were told that can't be explained away? Mostly the experiences seem to point towards it all being a load of hooey (which is what I believe, but I want to believe it's not). Psychics seem to give very general readings and most are frauds that pick up on things that the person has said and regurgitates them, right? My friend saw a psychic and apparently her dead father 'came through' and told her that she was having her garden done - and it was true! Like your dad would bother coming up from the spirit world to tell you some mundane crap from your own life that you already knew!

Sigh unfortunately you will get people who claim to have had an irrefutable experience with a psychic...basically because the simple act of going to a psychic normally means you're willing to believe them.

So they will often truly believe it whilst claiming to have originally been 'the biggest sceptic ever'. No amount of talking sense will get through to someone who desperately wants to believe something...just thinking about how religious millions of people are proves that.

The more important question is, why are you afraid of death?

And why do you really want to believe there is something after death?

Surely the 'lights out' option is less scary, than having to face 'something' after you've died?

No one has had an irrefutable experience with a psychic.

Nobel prizes, acclaim and rewriting of laws of nature would ensue.

Death scares most people we choose not to think about it too much

Most of us do not think too deeply about death as the finality is too difficult to deal with regardless of your belief in the afterlife

So even of you felt you were given a real message there are other questions that will arise

Irvin Yalom has written books on this subject and they are easy to read Staring at the Sun deals more with the anxiety of death and the impact it has on our life rather than what happens after death

Being a believer in the afterlife brings up a whole new set of questions for most it is not an answer to our fears over death

OP, I have complex fears and obsessions about death, following the death of my father as a young teenager, and then being very, very close to not making it through an emergency op myself a few years ago. I still struggle with that.

It plagues me, daily, and I wonder if I might also benefit from a bit of counselling or something.

But I read something recently, and a Google search would attribute to someone, I'm sure, but they basically said that all the millions of years that preceded their life, they were not alive, and it worried them not a jot. When they die, they would go back to ceasing to be, just like in those years before.

I actually found that to be quite a soothing death-related quote.

A search for a genuine psychic would probably be fruitless. I actually believe that some people do have some sensitivity for want of a better word, but those people probably just go quietly about their business and are not advertising in papers and charging people for stuff they've Google'd on you.

I agree that there are countless 'I'm the biggest sceptic ever but this 'psychic' Googled knew sooo much that she couldn't possibly have Googled known except from Google my dead dog' stories.

Oh wow! That is one of the most profound things I've actually ever read on the internet. It truly describes my outlook on death, although I have never managed to verbalise it until now.

Many years ago I read someone's palm. I'd read a book and it was a light hearted bit of nonsense. I told her she had literary leanings (it was a group of students) and it turned out she'd had a book of poetry published. Everyone there was amazed at my 'gift'. I have no psychic abilities at all.
Everyone who says they've met someone with a gift has met someone lucky or with a skill at reading or a skill with Google and Facebook.
Most people go to a medium to contact a deceased immediate family member. Please don't put yourself through someone scamming you.

I don't believe in psychics - my family all attend spiritualist churches on a regular basis.

My cousin reports a message from my younger brother - an out and out atheist - that he 'had to believe now', and from my Dad saying he 'should have left a will'. I've been caught up in a two year legal battle with his ex-wife.

Admittedly, both these things gave me pause for thought, but on reflection, I still think it's a load of old shite.

I belive the consciousness does live on after death and although many people will try to scam you there are a genuine few. The problem happens when they add arms and legs. I hate that. I have validation due to my own personal experiences but before then I had doubts even though most of my family have had a gift for this stuff through the generations.

My exmil see's the same phsychic every so often who told her about 2 non conceived DGC who would appear and the sex, He was right both times. When i was PG with DC3 i didn't tell anyone as i had had 3 MC the last one being at 16 weeks so was holding off telling anyone as i didn't want my DC to know

She went to the fortune teller came back and said he said theres another baby on the way, a girl. I was like nooo what will i do so i said nothing. She asked everyone for weeks who was pg and obviously everyone denied it, she even asked her teen daughter to do a PG test, When i heard this i owned up and then had my DD

not faortune teller, physchic, i think that's what he is, you go to his house and he does readings. Ive never been as it scares me.

A fortune teller told me i would have 3 blonde haired blue eyed scandanavian looking kids with someone i already knew when i was about 18, they stopped me in the street, I had 3 blonde haired blue eyed DDs though

My grandma died recently and we all noticed she was seeing things in the week leading up to her death and had also done stuff to suggest she knew she was dying like anote in her diary about an appointment then underneath it she put ALL BEING WELL???

Yeah, pretty much as far as I'm aware. There may be a genuine few out there, who knows.
My MIL absolutely swears by them and pays a fortune for them to come round, bless the house, communicate to her dead relatives etc. She called one round on her late fathers birthday and explained to her the reason she did was because she wanted to talk to her dad. Low and behold, psychic communicates to her dad. There's pictures of him all over the house but she was still amazed when the psychic described him. She has a completely blinkered belief in it and there's no convincing her otherwise. People will believe what they want to believe I guess, and these things can give them comfort.
But be wary and don't get ripped off. Some psychics prey on vulnerable, bereaved peoples emotions and grief, and it's not nice.

I had a really interesting session with a medium shortly after my brother passed away.

there were a lot of things he knew about me and my life which were specific and not advertised on Facebook or google...

He knew how my brother had died, who was visiting me (I didn't tell him I was seeking contact with my brother), about a load of money my brother had stolen for me (he even made a joke that "he gave it back in the end", as my brother had left me some money...

He also told me that my brother wanted me to tell my dad his heart was fine and to just relax... So I rang my dad and he had seen the GP worrying he had a dodgy heart because he had been having panic attacks.

He also talked a lot about my needing to write and to connect back with yoga, to revisit my academic interest in the Indian scriptures, and to accept that the abuse I had experienced both Asa child and as an adult were in the past and I was safe to left it go...

How he knew that, I don't know. Can't explain that on google and he never asked me any questions- just told me. He didn't even try and confirm or deny- just talked!

I feel the same about death. The thought of not existing anymore scares me so much that I could cry. In fact sometimes I think that it would be easier to believe in god and afterlife. I would also love to know that my "soul" will continue living.

I felt he was quite genuine, anyway. He didn't ask questions, the session took place in a bog standard counseling-type room, he dressed like any old normal bloke, and most importantly, he didn't press me to come back or send people or confirm his reading...

He basically just said: this is what your soul needs to hear, this is who is visiting you, and if I can ever help again, get in touch.

Pretty rubbish scam!

Me and my mates had one round one night and we all saw her. I'd never been to this mate's house before and didn't know the woman concerned. She immediately picked up on something deeply personal and private that had happened to me. She couldn't possibly have known.

Her future predictions were bollocks though so not all good :)

I saw a psychic, she picked up on a lot of really private, personal stuff. All my family relationships. The fact my partner was away while I was pregnant, but we weren't sepeeated.

She also told me I was having a.girl but had been told she was a boy first. Which was pretty clever. I don't know if she had a supernatural gift, or a gift for reading people. Either way I enjoyed the session and got a lot from it emotionally.

I am open to these things n , as such, have seen a lot of charlatans! But I have also seen a lady who predicted the timing, sexes n how far I would carry my dcs. Dismissed it at the time but then fell pregnant after a long time trying n having told not a soul n the rest just followed ....

I think vague predictions such as " u r facing a challenge" or "who is this person u don't get on with?" R based on probability as most people have something going on n someone who gives them grief n even if u didn't the fortune tellers would have the failsafe of telling u to watch out for it so I can c that is very easy to do but to predict due dates, sexes etc for babies that were not even conceived is a bit more than that I think?

Last summer I saw a psychic at a village fete (a proper psychic, not just someone dressed up as a fortune teller) - I'm usually quite sceptical but was intrigued. She said she could see a baby and asked whether I was pregnant - I was, but only five weeks, and I hadn't told anyone yet (and wasn't showing at all). I suppose as a married woman of childbearing age there were decent odds that I was pregnant, a relatively new parent, or open to conceiving in the near future, but I was still convinced!

That's how the conversation would have gone if you hadn't have said 'yes'.

That's probably fair, Worra... maybe I'm not that sceptical! I wouldn't have gone out of my way to make an appointment with a psychic, but once I was there I was quite ready to believe, if only because it was more fun than thinking that she was just using common sense and guesswork.

My mother pays great attention to magpies ("oh look, there are two - good news must be on the way") and other superstitions so I think a certain degree of credulity must run in the family.

I had a psychic tell me a lot of extremely accurate things but he had my name and an address so I suspect some of it might have been internet research-however he was very convincing and had my Dad's way of speaking right, if you understand what I mean.
When I was in my teens my Mum and I went to a psychic who had a crystal ball and we saw the images in it ourselves (eg picture of my grandmother) I can't explain that tbh.

My DM went to one a few years ago. It was strangely accurate.
She was warned to be careful when driving - a week layer a drunk driver drove straight into her, luckily she only had cuts and bruises
She was warned to keep a close eye on me, there was going to be a problem and I'd end up in hospital- I did!
She predicted the months and years the two younger boys were going to be born- got that completely right
Told my DM about jewellery in the attic - hidden by my nan.

There was no way this woman would have known about any of these things.

I saw a psychic once - wandered in of the street, paid cash, no name given. Wasn't wearing my engagement ring. She told me I was engaged and would be wed soon (not that impressed as she could pick up on the groove on my finger) and a few things about now DH / we would have kids etc which resonated but I suspected were pretty generic. I'm pretty dammed sceptical and had been pushed in by my MIL against my wishes.

What really struck me and made me question it was she then went "oh, honey, you gotta let it go - your Pappy is safe and well and loves you very much. You were always his favourite and he's sorry he left you". I was exceptionally close to my grandfather and he died when i was in my early teens and a bit of a nightmare. She then have some specific about him - when he died, what of, that I have noy grieved or let him go properly because of something i was told at his funeral etc. I have no idea how she got it.

I wouldn't say I believe but I would say I couldn't explain it

Whoa, wait a minute! Trudy, are you saying that you went to see a fortune teller, and pictures of your deceased grandmother appeared in her crystal ball?! What?! Like photos you already had, or what?

We had one come to mils house before, she advertised as a psychic but when I went in said she was a medium too and someone was there, she was able to tell me how my cousin died, about his 2 kids, how he was delighted I'd used his name in my ds name and he was signing happy birthday to me (had been my birthday the week before) and a few things about our granny that i just couldn't explain it away!
then for the predictions she said I was ttc but it wasn't going as easily as ds and that there were twins or irish twins in my future, 3 months later I was pregnant with twins! she also told me I'd never have much money hoping she was wrong with that one!!
