woman at work keeps farting

I know this might sound stupid but the smell is horrific, like egg, and it's really putting me off being in the office especially when eating. It's a small windowless room and it is very smelly as obviously there's nowhere for smell to go.

AIBU to pass this up OR will I just be laughed at?

How long has it been going? Any chance it's a temporary thing as she's unwell?

poppytea · 10/11/2014 21:50

It's not body odour as it's not constant and it smells like poo/egg, definitely a 'fart' smell.

At first I thought it was upset tummy but it's all the time.

Start complaining about the air con smelling weird whilst spraying air freshner around?

My face would not be able to allow the fart to go un noticed.

poppytea · 10/11/2014 21:50

No, we work in departments so if the office would move she'd come with us!

I know how stupid it sounds but it really, honestly is VERY smelly.

She might have IBS?

theeternalstudent · 10/11/2014 21:51

OMG, I think this might be me. sorry Flowers it's the curry.

poppytea · 10/11/2014 21:52

I think I'd almost rather have the smell of the fart than synthetic air freshener! They made me SO sick when pregnant (only almost mind!)

I think it's an issue due to there being no air circulation - if someone has a smelly lunch you do notice - but most food smells nice. Fart just smells awful.

Lol eternal put a cork in it Wink

I'm sympathetic to bowel problems but surely you have to control farts some of the time? Willing to be told you can't.

OP posts:
beavington · 10/11/2014 21:54

What are you expecting she can do about it? No one wants to smell a colleagues farts all day but what are you expecting to be acheived by her being spoken to about something that she is probably embarrassed about? Should she stick a cork in it?

WorraLiberty · 10/11/2014 21:54

Could you ask for an extractor fan to be installed?

NoArmaniNoPunani · 10/11/2014 21:55

I'm quite a prolific farter but there is no way I'd fart on my colleagues. She should at least leave the room.

Wishtoremainunknown · 10/11/2014 21:57

She really should be able to control it. Or at least leave the room.

LadyLuck10 · 10/11/2014 21:59

Tbf you shouldn't have to put up with working in an unpleasant environment. Maybe speak to your manager, he/she should have a word with your colleague.

poppytea · 10/11/2014 22:00

Worra, we did have one, although it was so noisy! Made talking difficult! Still better than being smelly.

Put some Vicks on something for you to smell

Picklesauage · 10/11/2014 22:04

Any chance she is pregnant? I am a nightmare for horrid eggy farts when in early pregnancy. I will confess I try my best to hold it in list working, but the odd one does occasionally escape!

SwedishEdith · 10/11/2014 22:05

Is it just you and her in the office? Can you wedge the door open and talk about it being stuffy or the bad drains?

VanGogh · 10/11/2014 22:05

Keep a strongly fragranced candle continually burning on your desk

Sheitgeist · 10/11/2014 22:06

Has it been going on for as long as you've worked with her, OP? Might it just be temporary as she's ill/ adjusting to a new diet etc.?

mrstiggy · 10/11/2014 22:06

My sister has IBS and farts all the time. It's horrible and can be a bit embarrassing but I'm pretty sure she can't help it. She's on loads of tablets and has had it brought up in appraisals and everything so if she could hold it I'm sure she would. So its most likely your colleague can't help it either. Not that that makes it easier for you I know.

dinodino27 · 10/11/2014 22:08

No one would do this deliberately - she clearly has a medical issue. IBS, crohns, colitis or weak pelvic floor - Post 3rd degree tear in child birth I really struggle to control farts. Be more understanding and rise above it.

Iloveonionchutney · 10/11/2014 22:08

I have Crohn's disease, some days I struggle to control my bowels at all, most of us work though and there are a lot of people who won't mention it out of embarrassment, controlling farts is most definitely uncontrollable and the smell isn't pleasant for anyone. I sympathise with you but there could be any number of conditions that cause her to have no control over it all. Of course there may be no reason at all and she just stinks Smile
