woman at work keeps farting

I know this might sound stupid but the smell is horrific, like egg, and it's really putting me off being in the office especially when eating. It's a small windowless room and it is very smelly as obviously there's nowhere for smell to go.

AIBU to pass this up OR will I just be laughed at?

I reckon a plug in ait freshner or 1 of those ones that scoot every 30 minutes or so

Pastamancer · 10/11/2014 22:39

15 times a day, is that all that's considered normal? I can easily do that in an hour

ILovePud · 10/11/2014 22:39

Or a motion activated air freshner placed behind her bum {grin}

Mrsjayy · 10/11/2014 22:40

farted in a flower shop

ILovePud · 10/11/2014 22:43

Apparently so Pasta, it might have been on operation ouch? After learning this my oldest boy started keeping a tally throughout the day, he then started cross referencing with the various foods he was eating, mushrooms were apparently the main culprits!

justmuddlingalong · 10/11/2014 22:44

Can you say to her, "Excuse me , you've dropped something, I think it was your guts". Not helpful but it made me smile!

Oh grim. I do feel for people who can't control it but by god I can't bear sitting in other people's farts. There is a woman at work who has a specific diet (her choice, for a particular reason) and creates extraordinary farts. Thankfully it's a big open plan office so it disperses quickly.
You are going to have to open windows and insist on them staying open, get a portable extractor fan and a plug in air freshener. And wear a loose scarf with perfume sprayed on so you can subtly stick your nose in it when she toots.

ZingOfSeven · 10/11/2014 22:58

just in case anyone is or might be pregnant please don't use geranium.

it can cause contractions and lead to miscarriage.

CreepusExplodus · 10/11/2014 23:06

It doesn't matter whether she can help it or not. No-one should have to work in the fog of someone else's farts. Definitely have a word with your manager and see if she can be moved into her own office.

Gruntfuttock · 10/11/2014 23:09

I couldn't stand it at all. If I had to put up with the smell of her farts, she'd have to put up with the smell of my vomit. I don't think it's reasonable to expect you to tolerate this day in and day out.

I think I'd ask her if she had a medical problem causing her to fart all day, for a start.

MollyWhuppie · 10/11/2014 23:15

I know someone who had Crohn's badly and had so much bowel removed she needed a colostomy bag from the age 15. Sometimes it would make the most awful smell if it needed to be changed. She was terribly embarrassed about it and hardly anyone knew.

Please bear in mind that it could well be something like this, and she may not be able to help it.

Whippet81 · 11/11/2014 00:53

I have IBS and my mum has a colostomy bag so I am not unsympathetic to bowel conditions - saying that neither of us are unable to control our 'wind' on a daily basis - I'm sure it's different for different people but I also don't think her needs outweigh yours - I certainly couldn't work in that environment and don't think you should have to either.

Everyone is instantly diagnosing her with various ailments - might be nothing wrong with her! I would raise it with a manager though you might all be sat there being polite thinking it's each other!

simontowers2 · 11/11/2014 01:40

I think you need to get it out in the open OP. Just ask her if she has a serious wind problem and or medical condition. I occasionally forget my surroundings and ease one out at work but not all day long.

Tiptops · 11/11/2014 02:08

What an awkward situation.

I really feel for her if it's a medical issue, buy equalling you shouldn't have to work I that environment, must be really unpleasant. I don't think scented candles/ air fresheners are a good idea, you need good ventilation to keep fresh air flowing in and stale air out. Is there a window you can chuck open?

Tiptops · 11/11/2014 02:08
  • but equally
daisychain01 · 11/11/2014 02:43

I'd be worried about striking a match with all that methane.

Notmeagain1 · 11/11/2014 03:09

Can youvgetvone of those light thngs that melts smelly wax on the top plate? I have several at home and one,in my office at work. Im not sure exactly what they are called, but you can get all kinds of scented wax cubes to melt and they are marvelous.

Im in the states so not sure if tou have them there or not. Confused

Stinky farts are the worst, I have had spme serious intestinal issues in the 6 months or so, which is why I have so many of these thingys. My DH and DS dont evacuate the room nearly as often since I got these thing. GrinBlush

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 11/11/2014 08:08

We have a Lampe Berger which is effective at eating bad smells. I think you can buy a neutral fragrance if you want. It does have flame by only for a few minutes so is safer than a candle. I think it would be expensive to run all day every day.

girlywhirly · 11/11/2014 08:59

I presume that if there is no window in your office there is air conditioning? Otherwise the room that is your office may not comply with regulations regarding ventilation. Worth checking out if that is the case as you may then be moved. Or if there is air conditioning it may not be changing the air as quickly as it should, so this could also be remedied.

For now, get a Neutradol gel odour destroyer. It is a blue gel in a plastic pot, you just peel back the top and it sits there absorbing smells rather than trying to out-smell them.

FishesTit · 11/11/2014 12:04

Could you get a small air purifier and mention as there are no windows it gets a bit stale?

Fluffyears · 11/11/2014 12:41

Join in, loud and proudGrin.

Be careful of plug in air freshener. They are a fire risk apparently so our work banned them.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/11/2014 12:48

I think you need to talk to your manager but frame it as a problem with the office being poorly ventilated. Poor ventilation can send you to sleep too so tell them you'd be more productive if you had more air in there.
