To be a bit dismayed if 4 million women visit this site, why are there so few posts on the feminism threads?

Ok so I know there are lots of lurkers but if there are really millions of women who go on MN, why are so many threads on the feminism section consisting of so few women? It doesn't make sense to me as so many issues that
women post about on many different topics are actually feminist issues when it comes down to it...

I'm good value at dinner parties, too Grin

lucycant · 18/04/2015 22:28

You sound great fun at dinner parties OutsSelf.

OrlandoWoolf · 18/04/2015 22:30

So it's the dominant feminism now on FWR. Not the MN feminism. Confused

I suspect that's why people with different views don't post there as it's hard posting against a dominant view.

Like going on the royalty forum and criticising William and Harry.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/04/2015 22:33

Yeah, I agree with that - I would feel a right twat if I posted on a royalty forum and had a go at William and Harry.

But I don't think it is quite the same really.

The royals have actual power, and there is good reason to criticise them.

Feminism is all about women being oppressed.

The only reason to criticise feminism as feminism, is if you believe women are powerful oppressors of others, and generally, those folks get banned.

limitedperiodonly · 18/04/2015 22:34

That's because you've overdone it on the homebrew Outself

Feminism is important and is still needed. There are people on here who don't think it's needed and that things are ok. It isn't.

But there are many different perspectives in feminism and different approaches and attitudes. FWR seems to only welcome certain viewpoints - despite the posters still agreeing feminism is needed and is important.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/04/2015 22:39

Well, maybe if you posted there, it'd be different.

You can't really criticise if you say you don't want to post.

I have to admit, I think it's petty nonsense to go on about FWR only welcoming some viewpoints. I know perfectly well that MN is what it is. If you were to post saying you thought fruit shoots were brilliant weaning food, you'd get shot down. We do conform to type to a certain extent. But, so what?

limitedperiodonly · 18/04/2015 22:39

from experience it is quite cliquey, in jokes, in-posters

I'm not in with the in-crowd on FWR but I'm all for cliques, in-jokes and I dream of being an .

So bring it on

MrsPeabody · 18/04/2015 22:39

I lurk, but find it too intimidating to post.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/04/2015 22:40

Oh, come and post, MrsP.

OrlandoWoolf · 18/04/2015 22:41

I haven't read the thread but I don't bother with the Feminsit boards on MN as from experience it is quite cliquey, in jokes, in-posters and a fairly narrow view of what feminism is and who feminists are

Which is why people don't post. It then becomes a cycle. Only certain people post with similar views and it puts others off.

ouryve · 18/04/2015 22:44

I tried to get into the MN feminism boards, but frequently found myself disproportionately irritated by them. I ended up blocking them, so I couldn't see them in my active conversations. I have enough shit to deal with, without an unedifying MN experience.

You know what? I was just browsing active convos when I spotted This thread in feminist chat

It's proper cheered me up and made me laugh Grin

I wonder if more funny threads are needed, to encourage people to dip their toe in the water? They might feel a bit less intimidated, if it's not so serious all the time? Just a thought really.

I don't think the OP even intended it to be funny. In fact it was the same person who bumped this thread today.

Either way, it was quite refreshing to read Grin

OutsSelf · 18/04/2015 22:49

I'm fun most of the time, Lucy. (Obviously I get a bit dour and humourless about sexual violence against women and children, etc. )

I think the Fem boards are some of the most likely to be told they are doing it all wrong, tbh, Orlando. People don't regularly rock up on the camping boards, shouting, just get a hotel, you idiots! But people are happy to tell fems they're doing it all wrong. They aren't speaking nicely enough, they need to widen their appeal, they need to not upset men with statements like, "most sexual violence is committed by men", they shouldn't reference their education cos it's intimidating but they shouldn't patronise anyone by speaking as if they were uneducated because it's condescending, feminists do groupthink when they agree but feminism is obviously a flawed and contradictory concept when they don't agree. That kind of shit.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/04/2015 22:49

Mmm.

I think, though, it can't have been quite the same for years?

I remember when I wasn't welcome on FWR. Then, I got to know more people, and the debates changed a bit, and I found my footing.

Same is true with lots of posters - there are loads of people I used to disagree with that I now don't, and vice versa. It keeps changing.

Mehitabel6 · 18/04/2015 22:50

I find them depressing- best to keep off. It is all such narrow thinking and humourless.
I thought people genuinely wanted to know why only a few post- they are saying why they don't, but it is all disputed, nothing changes and people still keep off!

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/04/2015 22:50

worra - we have fun FWR threads, you just need to keep an eye out!

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/04/2015 22:52

But ... 'only a few' don't post.

FWR isn't huge, but it's surely got more active posters than, say, S&B or the Doghouse, or the Fiction threads? And fewer than Telly Addicts. Grin

Mehitabel6 · 18/04/2015 22:52

All a great shame because it ought to be a wide ranging, interesting, vibrant board that welcomes debate. It isn't .
