I've come to Butlins with DH and the DC2 staying in gold accommodation with a premium meal plan.

We arrived today and got into our room at 3pm. By 3.15pm I had to contact maintenance and guest services about the state of the room.

  • floors not hoovered and covered in various bits of stuff, including discarded loom bands which my 2yo immediately picked up and put in her mouth
  • dead insects on the floor next to the windows in the living room
  • I had to clean poo off the toilet seat and back of the toilet before DD could go for a wee
  • old, used hair rollers in the cupboard
  • rollie cigarette butts shoved in the lock of another cupboard
  • security chain on the front door broken
  • shower pipe/hose leaking, a stream not drops
  • lino on the kitchen floor curling right up (4 yo has tripped on it at least four times)

We complained to reception who said they would get it sorted ASAP, today, before we got back this evening. Well we've gotten back this evening and it's not sorted. You'd think that given we had a specific list of complaints they'd have made sure they were all addressed? Nope. Came back to the room to dead insects still there, floor still make, lino still curling, cig butts still in situ and 2yo immediately found yet another frigging loom band. They've been in because the rollers are gone and the shower and door are mended.

I'm so angry Sad I've been looking forward to this holiday, our first since I had DS2 and it's gotten off to such a sour note.

It's Butlins. I don't expect mints on the pillows and flowers in every room but AIBU to expect it to at least be clean and serviceable rather than grotty and dirty and grim like we found it today?

Wow this is disgusting, totally be swerving a holiday at butlins!

Sorry your holiday was ruined op. Hmm

SweetSummerSweetPea · 06/08/2014 22:20

Shakey isnt gold standard the top though>

Anyway they dont give a shite...do they advertise on here? really shouldnt should they, if they make people so miserable on holidays....

bearfrills · 06/08/2014 22:21

Aren't they working in partnership with Mumsnet at the moment? They've won a mumsnet gold award and they're doing the ambassador thing, yet mumsnetters on this thread are showing that things are going wrong and these issues aren't being properly addressed.

DUCKS, that is awful Sad your holiday, your DC, your money - you should have walked into a room that was fit to be used, that was clean and safe. You don't go on holiday to clean or to stress about sorting out issues that shouldn't even be on the agenda. Which Butlins is it? If it's Skegness then they've obviously not learned anything from my holiday last month Hmm

I've emailed the team dealing with it to ask that this thread be included as part of my complaint :)

Op have you alerted hq to your concenrs....

SweetSummerSweetPea · 06/08/2014 22:50

A massive bit of metal sticking out which could have, quite literally, killed one of the children. The carpets are disgusting, there's dry sick outside, there's dust and hair everywhere and the toilets broken

wow and MN are promoting this?

Dry sick for your child to traipse in, before getting inpaled?

bearfrills · 06/08/2014 22:53

My battery on my phone is about to conk out so apologies if I vanish. I'm lazing in bed a bit poorly and charger is practically miles away downstairs.

Would it even be a matter for HQ to comment on? Wouldn't they see it as a matter between the individual and the company, totally separate from their award/ambassador scheme?

OP posts:
SweetSummerSweetPea · 06/08/2014 22:59

I dont know bear have no idea what award schemes are and stuff.

but if they are promoting butlins, then I think they should know children are going on precious holidays into filthy rooms with fag butts, sick and so on....

500internalerror · 06/08/2014 23:03

In my experience (5 visits) butlins is diabolical in peak season but fantastic out of season! We've never had bad accommodation, but the resort itself does get dirty & tired when it's busy. And under no circumstances should you choose the basic food - never mind the food, the whole seating & atmosphere is much better in premium'!

bearfrills · 07/08/2014 08:18

I emailed them asking that this thread be added to my complaint.

They've emailed back to say the information on it will be added to my complaint folder so hopefully they'll be reading this.

Hello :)

I don't think we will ever be going to butlins. This is one of several threads I have seen slating them. We went to bluestone this year and the cottage was immaculate, really. Staff so helpful and a broken dishwasher fixed the same afternoon. I recommend it.

SweetSummerSweetPea · 07/08/2014 10:06

Hi Butlins,

dreadful PR here.....I wouldn't touch you with a barge pole!

madamecake · 07/08/2014 10:18

I used to go to Butlins as a kid for our annual holiday and loved it. Definitely won't be taking my own dc after reading this thread!

sezamcgregor · 07/08/2014 10:38

I went a couple of years ago and the food for the cheap seats was so disgusting (inedible) that I'm not going back again.

It was a lovely budget holiday but it has really put me off.

It's CentreParcs and EuroCamp for us from now on....

PistolWhipped · 07/08/2014 10:41

YABU for thinking Butlins would give a shit.

ButchCassidy · 07/08/2014 10:49

We were going to book to go next half term... After reading this not a chance in hell.....

OHforDUCKScake · 08/08/2014 08:05

The hotels are supposed to be excellent, although you pay significantly more for them...

VirtualPointyHat · 08/08/2014 08:19

Dsis took DNephew to Butlins Bognor.

They queued for the pedal carts, but when they got to the front realised no restraints for DN.

Staff persuaded DSis this was ok, so she got on against better judgement.

The first corner they go round, DN somersaults out of the cart and lands silent on the tarmac.

Thank God he is ok, but really!!

After a lot of complaints from DSis they gave DNephew a teddy bear, and contnue to operate in the same way, its disgusting

PlacidApricots · 08/08/2014 08:42

I was considering a Butlins holiday, but no way not after reading this, it is terrible! I'll stick with Haven, they have proved themselves to me :)

hoboken · 08/08/2014 09:16

Dermot King oversees the running of Bustling and I think he is based at the offices in Hemel Hempstead.

CouldntGiveAMonkeysToss · 08/08/2014 12:59

Sounds grim. No way will I ever be going to Butlins after reading this.

Whereisegg · 08/08/2014 14:22

Another potential customer completely put off here...

bearfrills · 08/08/2014 14:31

Another day and no resolution to the complaint.

[Wine] anyone?

fluffymouse · 08/08/2014 14:44

Snap riskit

Another vote for bluestone if you fancy a UK holiday camp. It is truly beautiful, the cottages are well maintained and immaculately clean, and the staff went out of their way to be helpful.

They were so childfriendly too! My personal favourite touch was the soft play area in the dining room, meaning you could eat at leisure while dd toddled off and entertained herself.

Can you tell I love bluestone?

We may go there for a third time soon.

fluffymouse · 08/08/2014 14:46

Just wanted to add. We had no reason to complain during our bluestone stay, and found their customer service excellent.

When dm fell over, they sent a staff member to check on her later in the day, as well as escorting her back to the chalet and checking if she needed medical attention.
