I tend to assume that if a poster opts for AIBU purely for 'more traffic' (cos their thread is too special to be lost in the humdrum of the standard areas) then they're probably also the type to embellish wildly.

Can I just say that maybe people don't know what AIBU is actually about. I am relatively new to MN and as AIBU is one of the first pages to come up maybe they, like me have taken a while to understand 'the 'rules'. I also don't understand why it causes a problem. Without being seen as aggressive, I have seen desperate people, wanting advice, poured their hearts out, who have basically been told to go somewhere else! Just don't read or answer the threads that in your opinion shouldn't be on AIBU. Its taken me quite some time to work out the 'politics' on MN. Luckily I haven't had to post on AIBU in desperation. Maybe if someone can tell us what AIBU is for (and I am genuinely interested, not being sarcastic ..honest) then we will all understand the 'rules'.

If someone is pouring their heart out then AIBU is the last place it should be... There are so many people who just post there and are looking for a chance to jump on any little thing. Serious problems can be much better dealt with, by people who have experience and empathy in other areas of the board, such as relationships/legal/teenagers/special needs. Also, some of the more sensible posters have hidden AIBU as it is so bunfighty.

Having said that I don't care where people post...

When MN 1st started, what was AIBU meant to be about? Again, genuinely interested as I don't understand. Sometimes a thread is 'let through', sometimes the poster is told to post somewhere else.

God, that is so true.

Marylou - AIBU stands for Am I Being Unreasonable. It's one of the most popular parts of MN and attracts a particular kind of poster, and seems to encourage a particular kind of posting - which can be at odds with the rest of the site. However, because it gets a lot of traffic and is always in Active Convos, people post there even if their OP isn't anything to do with being reasonable/unreasonable, so they will get a response.

Some poor distraught mum posted she had just had a terrible argument with her DS and he had disappeared out, what should she do, it was pouring with rain and DS had no coat, mobile etc.

Some "helpful" poster just said "get this moved" because it was in AIBU. The OP obviously did it for the traffic because Teenage section is probably quite or she didnt know there was one for Teenagers. But she needed help so did it matter?

I lose faith in MN sometimes, I really do. Was tempted to say something, and decided not to stick my nose in or derail the thread. But its a reason I just CBA much anymore. Its just becoming pettier and pettier....

There seem to be threads at least once a week where a group of MNetters is singled out for attack in a TAAT.

I do not like TAATs and think YABU to start yet another one.

Disputed about posting style or content always used to be dealt with in the thread, and TAATs deleted. MNHQ leave this sort of TAAT to stand these days, and I think it is a pity.

I'm certainly posting much less, because these days I worry that one badly expressed post and I'll be next in line for the Two Minutes Hate.

Daisychain, that's bullshit, sorry. The lady on that thread was advised to move the thread because she would have got harsh or unsupportive answers on aibu, not because of being in the wrong place.

And so it proved, she got lots of snippy little comments criticising her parenting that she would not have got had she posted in the relevant forum.

I agree with Morris, I have suggested a thread be moved, not because I wanted the OP to "piss off" but because s/he was being attacked.

I know it means Am I being unreasonable! I just don't understand why some posts 'get through' and some get rudely told to go ask advice elsewhere. What is the history? When MN 1st started, what were the posts about? Surely the mother mentioned above...her son going missing, and was worried and asking whether she was being unreasonable to worry etc has every right to be on that particular 'page'? I am not trying to start some thing (I hate confrontation and have had my share of sarcasm and downright verbal putdowns on this site when I really thought I was adding to the conversation!)...I am genuinely trying to understand what AIBU is for? I think (and maybe I am wrong?) that some of the original MNetters feel that AIBU has been taken over and isn't what it started out to be? But does it matter? Just don't read/reply to posts you think shouldn't be there? (by the way, I think MN and especially AIBU is great! I just don't get involved with ANY nastiness...and I've seen a bit!!

Cross post! Again, sorry, a genuine question....Why would anyone attack anyone else for being worried?. And when the poster suggested that the thread be moved, I didn't read it as nastiness...it was concern for the mother. What is the history of AIBU being a site likely to get you verbally attacked when you post? Or has it just grown. I have a lot to learn and MN has definitely opened my eyes to the sometimes cruel nastiness of others! But the good people who give advice outweigh the ,bad' ones so I keep coming back...

Often the first couple of answers on an AIBU thread set the tone for the rest, so how it goes depends on who was browsing Active at the point that the OP first appeared.

So if a couple of the more virulent bunfighters were around, the sheep-like followers are likely to jump in joining the OP bashing.

Whilst I've got you here good people...can I ask how to keep up with the threads? I have to keep going back to the 'list' of questions and then open again. surely you can watch it live? Thankyou....as I said...I'm learning!!

The thing is that if someone worried, upset or desperate posts on AIBU they might not get the advice they need so it's sometimes better to direct them to SN, relationships or wherever they need to be, because that's where the people with experience or in depth knowledge tend to be. Many posters hide AIBU because of the bunfights and might not see a post that they can help with.
