to buy frozen jacket potatoes every week

It is one of those foods i would never have dreamed of buying, after all you can stick a normal potato in the microwave to cook for the same amount of time a microwave one takes to cook. Then i read somewhere (i think it may have been an AIBU thread) saying they were quite good and then saw them on offer and bought. Have bought them every week since. They are so much nicer than a microwave potato you do yourself from scratch, and ok i could crisp the skin on a potato but unless i have something else in oven i am having to light oven specifically.

These microwave jackets i'm finding great for when i get home form work and am starving. But somehow just can't get past the fact its a frozen jacket potato which seems wrong somehow

YANBU they're lovely. Buy them in bulk when they are BOGOF.

There must be a better way. Can you microwave 3 or 4 then put them in the oven for half an hour then (eat one) put them in the fridge for the next few nights. If I'm doing a baked potato I quite often do an extra one for the next day.

DH bought some on offer and they were OK (a bit sweet for my liking), but at least you can guarantee what variety you're getting (if you normally buy loose not bagged) and if you like it it'll be the same every time.

I used to struggle on making lumpy mashed tates, putting up with the kitchen being damp for fucking ages in the winter by boiling them on the stove and even the microwave (once I caught on I could do them in the microwave ).

But I get frozen mash from tesco now and my life is considerably happier

They are bloody lovely and great when you're craving a proper jacket and don't or can't find time to do one from scratch. I also love that the spuds are always huge and perfect (no black eyes or odd shapes).

How about this? Bake a bunch yourself (not microwave) then freeze them individually.
That is what I do with burrito's.

How long do they take to cook?

My micro has a setting for jackets which grills the top so it's crispy.

they take 5 mins in my microwave which is lowest power. Unfortunately my microwave doesn't grill

Potato ricers make the best mashed potato in the world and you don't even need to peel the potatoes.

I microwave them for 3-4 mins first YourMa, then add milk/butter/salt/pepper and microwave them for another 3-4 mins.

Depends on how much you're making, but they're as hot as the sun with that long. I like my food hot though

Hate pots at the best of times and don't have a microwave . YABU ,the thought of a frozen zapped one is grim .

If it works for you where is the problem? Microwaved pots are hard work, they never seem to get cooked exactly right, too hard or raw.

Nice done for 90 mins in the oven though. Frozen ones are a good back up.

Why don't you buy a whole bag of potatoes, microwave then crisp in the oven then bung them in the freezer......... Then just get one out when you need them.

I'm guessing it's a precooked potato that's then frozen, then you buy it?

The only thing that matters is if it has stuff added to it - is it just potato or potato with tons of weird shit in it that you wouldn't add yourself

If it's just a nicely cooked, no horrible bits potato- I'd buy the lot!

Can you microwave the frozen ones and then put them in the oven to get crispy skin then? I might give them a go. I haven't tried them because I just assumed they'd be revolting, like micro chips.

Pop them in the microwave for 5-10 mins depending on size. Then stick in a hot oven for another 20.

OK that takes half an hour but much better than a frozen tat surely. That's the worst idea I've ever heard.

Jacket potatoes are one of the easiest lowest effort things to cook, and still people are conned into buying a "comvienience" frozen version.

How is it a con? I assume OP is an adult who has weighed up the pros and cons like with any purchase. Ok, it seems like a pointless product but the advantages have been listed - consistent taste/texture, uniform size, long shelf life etc. Maybe if they were £5 each it would be a rip off but they seem reasonably priced too. Fair exchange is no robbery, as the saying goes.

I pay £3.50 for a jackey potato with cheese at ny local pub every time I eat there with DS as it's all he likes. I could buy a whole bag of potatoes for that - is it a con?
