to buy frozen jacket potatoes every week

It is one of those foods i would never have dreamed of buying, after all you can stick a normal potato in the microwave to cook for the same amount of time a microwave one takes to cook. Then i read somewhere (i think it may have been an AIBU thread) saying they were quite good and then saw them on offer and bought. Have bought them every week since. They are so much nicer than a microwave potato you do yourself from scratch, and ok i could crisp the skin on a potato but unless i have something else in oven i am having to light oven specifically.

These microwave jackets i'm finding great for when i get home form work and am starving. But somehow just can't get past the fact its a frozen jacket potato which seems wrong somehow

It's up to you. Your money, your time.

Asda sell a frozen omelet. Takes 40 minutes to heat through from frozen in the oven.

I can make one and have forgotten that I have eaten it in that time!

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/06/2014 07:47

It's the frozen sandwiches that get me the most.

How long does it take to butter bread and put a slice of ham in it.

Realitybitesyourbum · 14/06/2014 07:50

Linky?!

Slutbucket · 14/06/2014 07:54

If you like them buy them. If it makes life easier do it! Frozen mash has been a revelation for me and tastes gorgeous!

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 14/06/2014 07:54

I only ever buy frozen veg these days, it's cheaper, less waste and quicker.

Frozen mash and onions are my saviour in the winter especially.

I have been on threads where some mnetters got very arsey about stuff fron the frozen aisle.

Let it go Wink

Mothergothel1111 · 14/06/2014 07:56

I spotted these and stood staring for ages....really? Really? Was all I could think...

So very lazy surely. I do as a previous poter has said, do double and then just reheat. You could easily do a batch and freeze, just coat in sugar and butter they will taste the same and save you £.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 14/06/2014 08:11

If you like them OP, YANBU. I tried the McCain ones when they first came out, but didn't like them.

If I want a baked potato, I microwave it for 5 mins and then blast it in the oven for 10 mins to crisp it off.

I would never have one in a pub or cafe, even if I really fancy one as they will almost certainly be microwaved from frozen and hence disgusting.

Shock and Hmm about the frozen omelette though. I suppose that it might be useful if you only had a microwave and no hob or frying pan, but I would just have microwaved scrambled eggs instead, which are fine as long as you do them carefully on a low setting.

I love them.really tasty and super fast.. Full time job and 2 dc climbing up my legs, 5 mins in the microwave is heaven

Vajazzler · 14/06/2014 08:26

YANBU I buy 2 boxes every week! They are always perfectly cooked and fluffy on the inside. I prefer the Bannisters farm ones to mccain. They make a quick lunch for me or an easy tea for the kids on the nights when you don't have time or can't be arsed to cook!

3catsnokids · 14/06/2014 08:31

Can I just ask the people who freeze normal potatoes after cooking them - when you reheat them, how do you do it? In a microwave or oven? What heat? For how long? It sounds a very good idea which I've never thought of doing! Thanks

wowfudge · 14/06/2014 08:33

Lilaclily - frozen baked potatoes are not coated with sugar! That's preposterous. McCain ones are potato plus sunflower oil - and it's only only a very small amount. The Bannisters Farm ones are potato and olive oil. Their potatoes are grown in East Yorkshire.

This thread is almost identical to one from a couple of months ago. Most of the naysayers have never even tried them.

BikeRunSki · 14/06/2014 08:34

I buy them for work lunches. Much nicer than an ordinary microwave spud. We have a freezer and a microwave at work.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 14/06/2014 08:34

I do love a frozen veg thread Grin

restandpeace · 14/06/2014 08:35

Yanbu they are great!

gordyslovesheep · 14/06/2014 08:40

YANBU they are brilliant :D Lazy possibly but being a working single parent with 3 kids I'll take that sneer - they still make my life a whole lot easier Grin

Artandco · 14/06/2014 08:41

What?

To make x4 baked potatoes here:

  • microwave for 10 mins
  • oven under grill 5-10 mins.

Surely 5 mins per potato in microwave for frozen ones takes 20 mins total. Normal potatoes for 4 take 20 mins total also usual microwave/ oven grill combo.

hiccupgirl · 14/06/2014 08:43

It's not something I would have ever thought of buying till I saw a lady at work microwaving one for lunch with beans and cheese. Best idea ever so I am going to buy some for work lunches.

I always get the carrot and swede ready mash from the fresh counter at Tescos. Just carrots, swede, potato, cream, butter and salt. For a £1 heated in a pan it is great and I can't justify not buying it at that price.

gordyslovesheep · 14/06/2014 08:45

it takes 7 mins to do 3 - enough time to heat some beans, lay the table, pour drinks, round up kids ...job done

ExcuseTypos · 14/06/2014 08:48

YANBU.

It's something I thought I'd never buy, but for some reason I did about a year ago. I think I was a ill and couldn't be bothered cooking.

They are brilliant for when you have no time, just shove them in the microwave, grate some cheese and make a salad and you've got a lovely, filling meal.

ExcuseTypos · 14/06/2014 08:49

I think frozen veg have more vitamins and nutrients than non frozen.

Hakluyt · 14/06/2014 08:52

"I also love that the spuds are always huge and perfect (no black eyes or odd shapes)."

This would put me off actually- "perfect" vegetables usually mean a whole lot of waste, or farmers getting their crops rejected because they aren't"perfect".

Theodorous · 14/06/2014 08:53

On these thread someone always chips in with an alternative way to do things that is healthy and dull. Every single time. I don't think the op actually needs patronising nutritional advice. Just saying they are nice. In real world life the vast majority of people just eat food not analyse every single thing.

Parker231 · 14/06/2014 09:03

Life is way too busy around here so anything which makes easier rules in our house - prepared salad, veggies and we love the McBain frozen jacket spuds !
