to buy frozen jacket potatoes every week

It is one of those foods i would never have dreamed of buying, after all you can stick a normal potato in the microwave to cook for the same amount of time a microwave one takes to cook. Then i read somewhere (i think it may have been an AIBU thread) saying they were quite good and then saw them on offer and bought. Have bought them every week since. They are so much nicer than a microwave potato you do yourself from scratch, and ok i could crisp the skin on a potato but unless i have something else in oven i am having to light oven specifically.

These microwave jackets i'm finding great for when i get home form work and am starving. But somehow just can't get past the fact its a frozen jacket potato which seems wrong somehow

Farmers grade their spuds according to the buyer and purpose - spuds will be used for everything from frozen jackets to mash ...even ugly spuds have a use Grin

don't worry too much about the farmers

slartybartfast · 14/06/2014 09:11

how much do theycxost? if a packet of 4 is more than £1.10, the price of a packet of 4 jackets, then yabu.

Parker231 · 14/06/2014 09:21

They do cost more than a bag of spuds but you are paying for the convenience which is worth it to me when I get in from work at 7.30pm and everyone is starving ! Box of spuds into the microwave - open a bag of grated cheese and a bag of mixed salad - easy quick meal !

Cocolepew · 14/06/2014 09:26

They are great for lunches at work, especially in the winter .

KillmeNow · 14/06/2014 09:38

If I am eating in a pub I will often go for the baked spud option as I like them and I can rarely be bothered to do one for myself at home.

I am stunned by the realisation that, probably without exception, all of these have been frozen . I did wonder how it was possible to have a ready supply in the smallest of pub kitchens but for some reason never came to the conclusion that they used frozen spuds.

So today I will be sourcing some for my freezer and will more than likely dine on them several times a week from now on.

Thank you OP for the information.

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/06/2014 09:51

The McCain ones are fine, I've eaten them before. They don't taste as nice as proper ones though.

I can be a bit weird about microwaved food though, haven't owned a microwave in years. It does all taste different.

nostress · 14/06/2014 09:52

I buy them too. They are on offer frequently so they are not too costly. I generally oven them for a family meal, cutting 40mins off cooking time and saving electricity. I nuke them in the microwave at lunch if I fancy one. All good if you ask me!

nostress · 14/06/2014 09:55

On ocado 4 raw jacket potatoes £1.00, 4 frozen cooked £1.50. But think of the time saving and energy costs.

HoneyDragon · 14/06/2014 10:00

I love frozen baked potato threads.

People who've had them go

Wow they taste good and are really convenient

Then people who have not had them at all go

No, this is no good. Take the time and faff to bake a potato they can't possibly be good. I won't have this at all.

Gives me the Lolz Grin

fatlazymummy · 14/06/2014 10:06

Weird thread .
No of course you're not being U OP. If you like them then carry on buying them!

SueDunome · 14/06/2014 10:08

YABU. They are awful. And, yes, I have had them several times at my mother's. To me, they're watery and tasteless, but then, we don't have a microwave either, as we prefer oven cooked or steamed food. OK, maybe it's just me. ..

slartybartfast · 14/06/2014 10:15

not really convinced.
although i love my jackets in the oven, with oil on- crispy skins are the best part - AND I have 5 in my family, so the packet of 4 jackets are no good to me whether fresh or frozen.

but I still Hmm at them, and lots of other convenience foods.

MargotLovedTom · 14/06/2014 10:28

We tried them because I'm a lazyarse but I found that the bottom of the spud was rock hard and inedible. Where did I go wrong?!

Theodorous · 14/06/2014 10:29

If you don't own a microwave why comment on a microwave thread? Is it like the "I never watch big brother I'm far too clever" brigade who leap into any conversation just so they can show off?

Jinty64 · 14/06/2014 10:31

I bought them for meals in the caravan - it's convenience foods or eating out there. I thought they were great. I keep a box in the freezer but only use them if it's just for one person. If the whole family is having baked tatties I oven cook fresh ones. It's great for one person if everyone else is having something they can't eat.

GreatSoprendo · 14/06/2014 10:39

They sound brilliant - especially for days when I'm rushing to collect DS from nursery after a long work day and we need a meal on the table in 10 minutes. I'm getting some today! Will make a change from my usual standby beans on toast! I for one am more than happy to pay a little more for the convenience.

jnl0612 · 14/06/2014 10:46

I've got one of those siestema pots (those soup cups) I take left over bolognaise to work for lunch and chuck one of those spuds on the top, 5 minutes.. Yummy

DoTheStrand · 14/06/2014 10:50

I buy these, they are delicious. Also love the Bannister ones. They don't have any nasties in them. Don't get the anti-frozen attitude on MN at all. And why is it lazy to buy something that tastes good and saves time?

Parker231 · 14/06/2014 10:55

I don't understand people who are so critical of foods which made life easier - I'd love to spend my time cooking from scratch or batch cooking at weekends but life is too busy !

unrealhousewife · 14/06/2014 11:05

They cost 75p each! Even at 50p that's silly money. Hang on though how much are they fresh...

Pierce, wrap in paper towel, chuck in micro for 8 mins, done. If you want crispy put it under the grill for a minute.

unrealhousewife · 14/06/2014 11:09

Ok they're on special offer now for 25p per 100g or 50p each with Ocado

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 14/06/2014 11:29

I'm almost tempted to try them now. I am a baked potato purist and will only eat them if they've been in a hot oven for 90 minutes - which is ruinously expensive for one potato, since the rest of the family won't eat baked spuds at all.

If these frozen jobs taste almost as good as the real thing (when smothered with butter and Worcestershire sauce), then I might give them a go.

Hakluyt · 14/06/2014 11:56

I am definitely going to buy some today. And I have an Aga!!!!!

BikeRunSki · 14/06/2014 11:59

They may be pricey for a spud, although a big, raw spud from the Greengrocer costs about 35p anyway.

But I am not paying just for the spud, I am paying for a nice, healthy, warm lunch at work, where I all I have is a fridge and a microwave, which I share with 200 other people.
