to buy frozen jacket potatoes every week

It is one of those foods i would never have dreamed of buying, after all you can stick a normal potato in the microwave to cook for the same amount of time a microwave one takes to cook. Then i read somewhere (i think it may have been an AIBU thread) saying they were quite good and then saw them on offer and bought. Have bought them every week since. They are so much nicer than a microwave potato you do yourself from scratch, and ok i could crisp the skin on a potato but unless i have something else in oven i am having to light oven specifically.

These microwave jackets i'm finding great for when i get home form work and am starving. But somehow just can't get past the fact its a frozen jacket potato which seems wrong somehow

Jesus, there is some patronising shit on here. I don't think the op was asking for a lesson on baking potatoes, was simply saying something tastes good.

dreamingofsun · 14/06/2014 14:08

i think they are great. i also love frozen chopped onions (though don't tell anyone at my allotment site). And really lazy ginger and chilli

what else am i missing out on?

KillmeNow · 14/06/2014 15:41

Ive been to buy some on the strength of this thread.Grin

I can only get to Farmfoods though but hopefully they will be okay. They only cost £1.95 for 6 but they are probably smaller than other makes.Suits me though as a huge one is often too much with salad etc.

fatlazymummy · 14/06/2014 16:04

dreaming frozen spinach is great for curries and things. Just drop it in the pan. Really cheap as well.
And you can get frozen sliced peppers which are good in cooking (though probably not in salads).

DoTheStrand · 14/06/2014 16:08

Oh yes I love frozen spinach. You actually get a decent portion size unlike the fresh stuff where after cramming bags of it into a pan you only get enough to feed a mouse-sized Popeye. I may well have a frozen baked potato and frozen spinach for my supper now.

I love the macain ones, as pp have said you are guaranteed a consistently good size, texture and flavour every time which is worth having for me. Also spend probably 90% less time cooking them. I always used to do my own from scratch until about a year or two ago when every one I baked seemed to go 'wrong' or be tasteless, mushy etc. I think potatoes can have good years for harvest and bad but the Macains ones are always good.

Germgirl · 14/06/2014 16:22

I bought some for the first time today on the strength of this thread. A nice easy lunch for my post night shift days. Thank you OP.

Ohnonotagen · 14/06/2014 16:27

no problem Germgirl. Like i said i first bought them after reading about them on a mumsnet thread!!

For info, if we are all having jacket potatoes then i'll do them from normal potatos, either in the oven or in the microwave first then oven for 20 mins to crisp. Its just if its only me having a jacket potato and the oven isn't already on to cook something else, then think the difference in cost would be minimal by the time you take into account the electricity for the oven.

They are good, I buy them when they are on offer to put in the freezer. I have one with one of those microwave snap pot baked beans and some cheese. Quite often have one if I'm on my own, very handy.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 14/06/2014 16:31

Next shop I'm going to add these, do Sainsburys do Bannister?

splendide · 14/06/2014 16:31

It completely failed to occur to me I could do them at work! We've only got a microwave, these'll be great for there.

fledermaus · 14/06/2014 16:32

I love them, perfect for making myself a quick lunch while the baby is asleep or as a quick tea for DC1.

Also love: frozen chopped onions, frozen mash, frozen spinach.

iklboo · 14/06/2014 16:46

We love these. Great for a quick snack or sometimes we'll scoop out the flesh & mash with Mexicana cheese and and egg yolk, pile back in the skins & pop under the grill to melt the cheese & crisp up.

ContentedSidewinder · 14/06/2014 16:46

We buy a bag of 10 from Makro and they work out at less than 50p each IRRC. It is a long time since I priced them.

DH takes them to work where surprise surprise they don't have an oven. He takes left over dinner from the night before to have as a topping ie spag bol sauce, chicken salsa etc or cheese, tuna or beans.

dreamingofsun · 14/06/2014 17:29

i'm going to try frozen mash. i hated smash that dried stuff, though...hopefully frozen is better. Yes tried frozen peppers which are great, and much less wastage than fresh

Hakluyt · 14/06/2014 18:09

Aunt Bessie's frozen mash is very good. The others I have tried less so.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 14/06/2014 18:36

I tried them after reading about them on here. I think they are fantastic to have in the freezer for a quick lunch when I don't have an hour to cook one.
I tend to put a chilli in the slow cooker before I go out, then when I get in just put some frozen potatoes in the microwave for 5 minutes and tea is ready just 5 minutes later. Great idea.

noblegiraffe · 14/06/2014 18:56

YABU unreasonable OP, you should hollow out a butternut squash and fill it with organic lentils. Much nicer and healthier.

I've got microwave new potatoes for tonight, with some mint and butter in the packet.

TulipOHare · 14/06/2014 19:07

YANBU, they are great! I buy the mini version (think they are called something else now but used to be Jacket Smiles) every week.

I don't have a microwave so they go in the oven.

They are great because they're pretty consistently fluffy and delicious - I can't stand waxy potatoes, to the point that I can't eat them at all, so if I buy jackets and spend time cooking them only to find the texture is wrong, it is crushingly disappointing. With these I can count on a perfect jacket 99% of the time (have had one or two duds Hmm )

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 14/06/2014 19:53

Thanks Agent zigzag. I've just had some Aldi frozen mash and it was lovely.
Little princess that sounds lovely. I'm doing that on Monday.

JsOtherHalf · 14/06/2014 19:53

Bannisters are nice. Ocado sell them, as does Aldi.

JsOtherHalf · 14/06/2014 19:58

Aunt Bessies frozen mash is nicer than the Aldi one. I use the aldi version for topping a cottage pie, but aunt bessie's to use as part of a meal.

SnookyPooky · 14/06/2014 20:16

I love them but they are expensive where I live.
Today I was cooking something else so put 6 taters in too. Had one for me tea, rest into freezer.
I wouldn't put the oven on just for jackets.

HopefulHamster · 14/06/2014 20:41

I've only had the McCains ones and they're nice. Previously we'd buy a bag of spuds, forget about half of them, chuck them (yes not very good at planning). With these, bung em in the freezer, and they're ready when I want them. They're nice too. I put them in the over for a bit after microwaving for extra crispiness but you don't need to. They seem a bit dryer than regular pots, so I use more butter on them. Keep meaning to take them to work and forgetting!
