To loathe these sexist American sitcoms?

Ok so these are the culprits,

Everyone loves Raymond
Two and a Half Men
How I met your mother
Rules of Engagement

They are all different but the themes are pretty
much the same. Demanding women, guys that are players, unreasonable women, tacit acceptance of treating women like shit. Crazy women, empathy with the guys, point of view. Just sick of them, I know that they are supposed to be lighthearted and humorous but just feel that the drip drip mysogony infects the culture and makes it so much harder for women
To argue against this entitled behaviour by men as it is so normalised and if you argue against
it you are deemed to lack
A sense of humour, be demanding, neurotic etc..,

Do other people know what I'm saying or is it just me...??

Im with you on this I fucking HATE them.

stillenacht1 · 28/04/2014 21:40

Maybe I'm being stupid but I like ELR... I see it that Ray, Frank and Robert are all a bit pathetic and Deborah and Marie have to sort them out and also that Ray is a mummies boy who continually struggles with the relationship of the two strong women. The only character I dislike from ELR is Amy...can't stand her.

BumPotato · 28/04/2014 21:41

YANBU to loathe whatever programme you wish to loathe.

I like Two and a Half Men, it makes me laugh. They are only jokes, it's not a documentary.

I have never watched Rules of Engagement or Everyone Loves Raymond. HIMYM is a pathetic pile of shite, IMO.

YANBU. Especially two and a half men. How the audience are expected to believe that Charlie Sheen, who looks like a cross between Stig of the Dump and Gordon Ramsey, gets chased by stunning women is beyond me.
I don't watch it but I saw a trailer where the brother of Charlie sheen goes out on a date with a post-op transsexual and it's meant to be funny because she opens doors for him and punches someone who insults him, ie is 'the man' of the relationship.
What. An. Offensive. Crock. Of. Shite.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 28/04/2014 21:42

I loved ELR!

kali110 · 28/04/2014 21:43

I love them all bar two and half men ( the new series) .
I was gutted when rules of engagement finished yet we have crap like two broke girls left on tv.

YANBU

I liked the Guardian's description of TAAHM

a string of softball, low-energy wisecracks performed by uninterested millionaires to an audience of whooping nimrods who just tuned in to see which minor celebrity could be most easily coerced into running around in her bra that week.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 28/04/2014 21:53

Community and Arrested Development, as well as funnier & more intelligent, are much better on gender politics - though hardly perfect.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 28/04/2014 21:58

Oh fuck DH loves Brooklyn 99 and I can't even bear to be in the same room when it's on Grin

He loooooooves all those American shows (we are Canadian but living in UK) where I just want to watch Antiques Roadshow and QI and Grand Designs My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding and anything with Mary Berry.

DH's idea of Great Telly consists of all the shows listed by the Op plus:
Chicago Fire
Blue Bloods
NCIS
Elementary (this one is ok)
The Good Wife
Suits
Breaking Bad
The Daily Show
Fox News
American football
Golf
And on and on and on

It's like he's trying to recreate our tv viewing life as if we still lived in North America. We've been here for thirteen fucking years for crying out loud.

I only survive by MNing at the same time. And the fact that we have a second telly in a different room.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 28/04/2014 22:01

And he's trying to indoctrinate the DDs too. He's got Dd1 into that Marvel Agents of SHIELD business. Grrrrrrrr.

joanofarchitrave · 28/04/2014 22:03

I agree, I don't like any of the female characters in these progs, either on a pedestal or bitches.

fidelineish · 28/04/2014 22:04

YANBU

Total dross.Written by commitee, which might partially explain it. I thought I was alone in thinking this.

TurnOverTheTv · 28/04/2014 22:06

I'm sure ELR finished about ten years ago. The thank you note episode made me cry with laughter, it's exactly what my MIL is like Grin

spanky2 · 28/04/2014 22:07

I love Brooklyn 99 too. Definitely the wedding weekend in himym is too long. The rhyming episode was crap. I like couger town which I am sure is wrong on many levels.

AskBasil · 28/04/2014 22:10

I don't watch them anymore, waste of reading/ mumsnet time.

I used to watch the Big Bang Theory, but really the joke's wearing thin. So predictable and dull. Very well-done rubbish.

SomethingAboutNothing · 28/04/2014 22:10

Rules of Engagement particularly irritates me, the main characters are just so unbelievable. What woman would put up with the Geoff character? He has not one redeeming feature.

HIMYM on the other hand I do enjoy, although agree with the previous poster that they are dragging this season out painfully.

stayanotherday · 28/04/2014 22:13

I've never watched them. Predictible and boring.

Sparklingbrook · 28/04/2014 22:17

Oh no. I quite like According to Jim. Blush

phalanges · 28/04/2014 22:18

What about Modern Family? I have only seen 2 series but -

The two main female characters are housewives who depend entirely on their husbands' incomes. The young 'trophy wife' is a complete bimbo who wears revealing clothes all the time.

One of the daughters is pretty and stupid, but is popular. The other daughter, less attractive but clever is less popular and is constantly criticised for being studious.

The gay couple have clearly defined roles, one manly lawyer - the 'husband' and one effeminate who, guess what, stays at home.

thecatfromjapan · 28/04/2014 22:22

I am going to name "The Big Bang Theory" as sexist shit too. It's the "Are You Being Served" of our contemporary moment: people will cringe that they didn't see how unpleasant it is. My 16 year old son goes into a huge rant about how misogynistic, stereotyping and offensive it is, and how it "hides" all of its fundamentally horrible premises under a thin veneer of being nerd-friendly. He's right (i.m.o.).

Anyway, YANBU. I really don't get why misogyny is still OK. It's not. I'm sick of it. We're in the C21st now. I'm bored of sexist shit.
