to expect people to spell my name properly???

I have a fairly common name, there was another one in my year at school, lots of famous people with my name etc so its not as if it is unknown to people... Lets assume it is Rebecca ... Now I know there are variations in the spelling, but my spelling is by far the most common...

Now what bugs me the most is my email address is [email protected] and people still start emails regularly with 'Hi Rebekah' ... Seriously you just bloody emailed me with the right spelling in the email address... Get it right when you address me!!!

I think it is lazy and rude... AIBU?!?

YANBU. I have a surname which is VERY simple but people constantly ask how to spell it.

Say my name is "Sally Number" and people say "Is that with a K?

As in "Sally Knumber"

My surname is an actual thing...like a kettle or a bucket or a teacup or a horse...it's IMPOSSIBLE to spell it with a frigging K!

I get that on emails as well - how can you still misspell it when my bleeding name is right there in front of you? In my case though my name is not common and not English - but even so, when you're there looking at it and you must know it's tricky, wouldn't you think you'd take a look at the spelling?

I get that all the time with street name. It's like

My NAN spells my name wrong ! And so does my MIL of 9 years , my name is the easiest of the 3 variations !

I have a name which is commonly spelled Jacqui, Jacquie, Jacky, Jackie. I don't blame people if they get it wrong.

My mum spells my name differently to how I do.

My family, Grandad's, uncles etc spelt name wrong. I'm over it.

However, yes it is VERY annoying when people who are emailing me spell it wrong. The correct version is right there in front of them.

Yanbu esp as they obviously can spell your name as they did in the email addy!

I used to get something similar, my email addy is my first name and then my surname, my kids are double barreled. So the School would email me to my email addy with my name and then in the email they would address me as Mrs dps name... We are not married! The kids are first name mysurname-Dpssurname. I have no idea how they can email me to an addy that IS my name and then refer to me by a completely diff name that is note my name in the email, fgs!

I must daily inform people that my first name is NOT Barbara no matter how much they insist it is, and should we pass that point, I must then explain that my surname spelled "like the person that cuts a man's hair".

On a similar note (please correct me if it is not proper etiquette to ask similar questions in a thread):

People insist on mispronouncing my child's name AFTER she corrects them. Example, let's say her name is Anna and she pronounces it as An-Na like a "Banana". People always refer to her as Awn-a, as in "yawn". She politely says, "actually, it's An-na", to which they reply, "What a beautiful name Ah-na". It drives me crazy!

People routinely drop a letter from my six letter name despite it being in my email address, email signature and letters sent to them.

It's a commonly known name! And like you my spelling is by far the most common.

I get my name misspelled all the time on Facebook, where it's Right Fucking There On The Screen!!

FFS I've just emailed them with the details and most 6 year olds can copy an eight letter word correctly. What excuse do adults have????

I get fed up at work. I have worked there many years and had the same surname...I now refuse to sign any documents unless it is correct

I have a different problem. My surname is short, relatively unusual. I spell it out. People query the spelling. No, I say, it's 'X-X-X-X-X'. And they look doubtful, and say 'Oh, so no 'a' then'? And I say 'No'.

I mean really, it's my name, I'm not 12, can't they just accept the spelling I give them?

Emails autocomplete though - the person hadn't just typed it twice.

Yanbu. I often end up being given an apostrophe in my name, because of autocorrect I'm assuming but they could at least check.
One of these names is correct but I have to suffer all of them: Karis, Karys, Keris, Kerys, Cerys, Ceris, Carys, Caris, Charis, Charys, GARY!

I'm Nicola. People always add a H to my name (Nichola) or worse - call me Nicole!!

If somebody verbally tells me their name is Rebecca/Rebekah I just assume it is spelled the more common way (Rebecca) unless specifically told it is actually Rebekah.

Other female examples where I just assume the more common spelling: Anne unless told its Ann. Jane unless told its Jayne. Isabelle unless told its Isobel. Robin unless told its Robyn. Amy unless told its Aimee. Elizabeth unless told its Elisabeth. Kiera unless told its Ciara. Carol unless told its Carole. Hayley unless told its Haley. Amelia unless told its Emilia.

Ones where I always ask how they spell it: Catherine or Katherine. Cara or Kara. Lee or Leigh.

I just smile, and nod, and laugh, and try to keep a sense of humour. And I've left out the middle name. Our DC have almost the equivalent of John and Jane for their first names

I fantasised about being called Susan when I was younger.

I can get past people using the more common version of my name because it's happened all my 40+ years

What really pisses me off is when I fill in official forms correctly and the official document appears spelt incorrectly. Yes DVLA I'm looking at you. And half a dozen other govt depts.

We've lived in our house and had the same neighbours for 25 yrs. I have also been friends with other people for much longer. We have exchanged greetings cards (Christmas/birthday etc) with all of these people for all of this time. I make a note of how they spell their names, and how their children's names are spelled. Is it too much trouble to spell mine correctly in return? 25+ years - For crying out loud. Yarrgh!

Once I had a boss called S M I T H. Once on the phone, on loudspeaker he said his name and the person said can you spell that please, yes, S M I T H, Smith. Is that pronounced "SMITH". Yes, boy, it's SMITH. He said "boy" too.

We were literally stuffing tissues in our mouths and it was trading floor and I think someone actually did start unzipping to pretend to pee himself. Oh God those were the days !

Nobody can spell my married surname, literally nobody. And it's a relatively easy one IMO. I just automatically spell it out when in the phone now, saves time.

My sister spells both of my DD's names wrong all the time, DD1's name does have 2 spellings though and she is far to polite to mention it, DD2 on the other hand, her name can only be spelt 1 way, she is nothing like her sister and is likely to say something soon.
