I have a fairly common name, there was another one in my year at school, lots of famous people with my name etc so its not as if it is unknown to people... Lets assume it is Rebecca ... Now I know there are variations in the spelling, but my spelling is by far the most common...

Now what bugs me the most is my email address is [email protected] and people still start emails regularly with 'Hi Rebekah' ... Seriously you just bloody emailed me with the right spelling in the email address... Get it right when you address me!!!

I think it is lazy and rude... AIBU?!?

My aunt could never spell her own mother's name, Margaret. She would always spell it as Margret and even had this engraved on her mother's headstone.

BillyBanter · 15/04/2014 23:14

the problem with being 'Rebecca' is that the most famous one (at the moment) is 'Rebekah'. (or similar, I've not been paying much attention)

This may not be the case with your actual name, of course.

The most (worldwide) famous person with my name uses a different spelling from mine and I would say it has increased the misspelling of my name, which is the more common version.

Openupyoureyes · 15/04/2014 23:15

I have a Welsh name and all my life it's been rare for me to come across anyone with the same name, so I'm used to people spelling it wrongly or pronouncing it wrongly. I understand that. But my ndn of 15 years calls me by the correct name but puts a totally different name in Christmas cards, not even a shortened version of my name. So if my name were Janice, she would put Jane, or if I were Marianne she would put Mary. If she texts me she puts the correct name Confused

withextradinosaurs · 15/04/2014 23:24

So people are offended if their names are spelt wrong but also offended if asked how to spell them?!

I would ask how to spell Smith, as it could be Smyth or even Smythe.

MidniteScribbler · 15/04/2014 23:32

I have a slightly unusual name and spelling, so I can forgive people who misspell it. But if you're emailing me and it's in the email address, why would you get it wrong?

What really annoys me is parents sending an email and they write "Dear Teacher". I have a name. I teach your child for a whole year, you only have one teachers name to remember. My name is written right there in my email address.

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/04/2014 23:43

Aren't Smith and Smyth/e pronounced differently?

I've known a few of each, didn't pronounce them in the same way as each other.

Nennypops · 15/04/2014 23:43

I sometimes feel people have a compulsion to get names wrong. One of the reasons I changed names when I got married was because people so often spelt my surname wrong. It's a moderately uncommon name but there are a number of well-known people who have that name and I've never known anyone spell it any other way that the way we did, yet people insisted on putting totally extraneous and illogical extra letters in.

So when I changed to a more well-known name (because it's more common) I thought that that problem might be over. How wrong I was. Once again, it's a name which, as a name, is only ever spelt one way, but I still get all sorts of spellings. I now almost automatically spell it out when I give my name, but then I get some people getting quite offended because I apparently think they're so dumb as not to know how to spell it. You just can't win.

BellBookandCandle · 15/04/2014 23:49

But Mintyy does it not grate (ever so slightly) when you sign off as jacqui or whichever variant you use and some illiterate twat comes back with jacquie?

A person's name is their identity, tis only polite to spell and pronounce it as they choose.

My RL name is another common surname, think Jones/Brown/Smith type and I have to spell it to people.

My first name is only 4 letters and people still get it wrong.

But then on here people confuse my name, I often get called sassh.

And then there are people who have one name but pronounce it differently like Featherstonhaugh. What is that all about? And Magdalen? Only in Oxford would people know that without being told.

Around Preston the surname 'Hough' is quite common with about a 50/50 divide on whether it is pronounced 'How' or 'Hoff', I went to call a patient in one day and asked for Mr Hough (Hoff? Or do you pronounce it How), no this person pronounced it 'Hoe'.

rallytog1 · 16/04/2014 06:55

I once received a letter from someone informing me that I was spelling my own name wrong.

She'd seen me using my (correct) spelling, but someone had told her my name was spelled differently, so clearly that meant I was wrong and the random stranger was right.

I was a bit Hmm, not least because she'd had the time to write a whole letter about it!

Incidentally, I have a common and pretty pedestrian name, which isn't normally the subject of confusion with normal people.

CrohnicallyChanging · 16/04/2014 07:02

I not only have to spell both my names (fair enough as my first name has several variations, and my maiden name was unusual, but now my married name is more common, I can think of several people on TV with the name, and we all spell it the same way), but I often get called by completely the wrong name- which has nothing in common except for the same first letter- think Jessica and Jasmine!

Though why does everyone go for the same wrong name? I'm so used to it, that when the pharmacist shouted out 'Wrongname Mysurname' I went up and asked if she meant me (she did).

And as for my nn on here, it's Crohnically, it's spelled that way on purpose as I have Crohn's disease. Mind you, that's a new thread in itself, the number of medical professionals that misspell Crohn's!

Hellokittycat · 16/04/2014 07:50

I have to spell my surname every time. So much so that my young kids now give their name spelt out as standard when asked :-)

Legologgo · 16/04/2014 07:54

I assess the stupidity of the person taking it. It's sounds like if starts with one letter but doesn't. That's the first problem.

Charliegirl21 · 16/04/2014 08:05

No-one ever spells DH's name right, even his grandma gets it wrong. Don't think he really cares though, he is so used to it and if asked he says he blames his parents for giving him an obtuse name!

My name isn't unusual but when I was growing up it was often spelt or pronounced as a variation (think Anna, Ann, Annie, Anne)
I spent a whole year doing a work placement a day a week with my first and second name spelt wrong on my name badge actually. It didn't really bother me.

I'm surprised people are moaning about spellings being checked though. Even John can be Jon, Jane can be Jayne etc.....

BuzzardBird · 16/04/2014 08:07

My name is a mare. No-one can spell any of it and although obvious that my surname is forin the doctors receptionist never fails to ask me about it. I have told her 3 times it is from Yorkshire! Grin

deakymom · 16/04/2014 08:07

deakymom spelt deekymum deekcemum i get it all the time and my first name? its always with a k or a c? e or an a? (sigh)

the worst is when they are replying to me so they have my name in front of them but still mis spell it!

eatmydust · 16/04/2014 08:08

My name has been spelt wrong or pronounced incorrectly for all of my life. On official documents, even when I give them the correct spelling, at work, by people I have known for years..... actually, I am over it and answer happily to both versions and never correct people anymore.

It isn't even that unusual ffs... just a slightly different spelling and pronunciation of a reasonably common name. I do find other people can get annoyed on my behalf though.......

BoiledPiss · 16/04/2014 08:10

I have exactly the same problem as you op, common name, two common spellings of it.

Email address contains it, fb profile contains it, spelled (spelt?) Confused wrong constantly.

Fucking drives me mad!

In answer to pp question about asking how to spell it, i like it when people ask, it gives me the impression they actually give a shit about getting it right! So please do ask :)

Hippychickster · 16/04/2014 08:12

My name actually IS Rebecka and it's spelt like that as my parents are Swedish. People usually spell it Rebecca as that's more common and it doesn't really bother me.

Mind you, when I explain and then they spell it Rebekah or Rebeckah, that is irritating! A boyfriend a few years ago constantly spelt it wrong and it did put me off. It's really not that hard!

pinkgirlythoughts · 16/04/2014 08:12

My sister is a Chloe, and had all sorts of weird spellings when she was growing up. I think she was quite relieved when it became so popular, because at least most people know how to spell it now!

Youngest sister has an e on the end of her name, when it's most commonly spelt without one, and our surname has no e, when it's most commonly spelt with one. People are always putting the e in the wrong place, even when she's told them how to spell it- e.g. she's Jaye Cook, but gets Jay Cooke instead.

I have an unusual first name and second name so spend all my life spelling it for people.

What frustrates me is I've spelt it out for you, two or three times, and you still get it wrong! Yes, I'm looking at you auto glass repair man. I know my last name is uncommon, that an s might sound like f BUT would my surname really make sense with an s in it?!

Charlieboo30 · 16/04/2014 08:33

Forgot to add, when I did my driving test the examiner has spelt my first name wrong on the official paperwork that you have to sign. I pointed this out and he said 'it can't be spelt like that, I've taken it off your driving licence.'

Ok then, it's not like I've had my first name for 25 years or anything...

Grennie · 16/04/2014 08:34

My name has been misspelt all of my life. You need to get more laid back about this, or you will be permanently enraged. And my name is in my email address too.
