I have a fairly common name, there was another one in my year at school, lots of famous people with my name etc so its not as if it is unknown to people... Lets assume it is Rebecca ... Now I know there are variations in the spelling, but my spelling is by far the most common...

Now what bugs me the most is my email address is [email protected] and people still start emails regularly with 'Hi Rebekah' ... Seriously you just bloody emailed me with the right spelling in the email address... Get it right when you address me!!!

I think it is lazy and rude... AIBU?!?

YANBU.

I always had to spell out my maiden name and have a variety of different versions of it thrown at me over the years.

It's understandable - although still mildly annoying - if the person doing it has only heard the name verbally and has not seen or been given the correct spelling.

But. There's no excuse at all for them misspelling your name if it's there in front of them on an e-mail address.

DevonFolk · 15/04/2014 22:23

Both my first name and surname require spelling. My name has never been as simple as Devon Folk. It's Devon Folk D-e-v-o-n F-o-l-k. And still people get it wrong Hmm

NearTheWindymill · 15/04/2014 22:23

Oh yes, and nurses. That's a very unusual name isn't it. "yes it is" say I. And then they go into the "and where's that from then". And for my maiden name I had to say it's European and for my married name I say, it's from the North of England. And I am so tempted to say, "just shut up, I know my name's unusual, I'm feeling really nervous and I don't need you to comment about something that's really rather tedious and that you should be able to work out for yourself".

Once, I even engaged mouth before brain and said, oddly enough it came from my father. And she got very snippy with me.

Just don't comment, it's a bit like telling a plain person they've a big nose or their eyes set too far apart. It just all gets a bit too personal and invasive and they wouldn't have the conversation with someone called Jones, so why can't they make small talk with me about what they would discuss with Jones?

littlewhitebag · 15/04/2014 22:24

ihatewaiting There is also Isabel which is my middle name.

sonlypuppyfat · 15/04/2014 22:25

I have a very common old testament name which I always introduce myself as but no fuckers shorten it then fuck bollocking lengthen it with an ie on the end!

BathTangle · 15/04/2014 22:25

We have a fairly common surname, with an unusual spelling - I am accustomed to people spelling it wrongly where it doesn't really matter - dry cleaners, restaurant bookings etc. Where I did object was when it came home printed (by the school) on DS1's SPELLING book.....

EvilTwins · 15/04/2014 22:25

MIL spells my name with an "ie" when she knows damn well it's a "y". I swear she does it on purpose. Her name only has 3 letters so I can't reciprocate by misspelling hers Hmm

velvetspoon · 15/04/2014 22:25

My name has an unusual spelling. I expect people to get it wrong initially, however it does grate when people on FB or work email (my work email address is my full name!) get it wrong CONSTANTLY - and I think ye gods it's in front of you, how hard can it be!

However what REALLY annoys me is when people actually get my name wrong, which happens about once a week on average. My name (leaving aside spelling) is a fairly ordinary one. People regularly call me another name which is similar but which so far as I am aware, is never shortened by anyone to my name. Basically like if my name was Paula, people regularly calling me Pauline Hmm

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 15/04/2014 22:26

YANBU.

Both my first name and last name are very common but have more than one spelling. I can't remember the last time someone spelt my full name correctly, even if I've just told them.

zeezeek · 15/04/2014 22:27

I get Sarah, Sara, Zara as variations of my name (only one is correct).

Both of my DDs have unusual names (in England) and so I/they just get puzzled looks.

As for my poor Swedish DH....lets just not go there!

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 15/04/2014 22:29

Aah - Jones. That is another subject. I'm a Jones - well, let me tell you some stories on that .......

Oh, that's a popular name in these here parts (Wales, obviously)
How do you spell that J-O-A-N-S?
Jones - let me look for you in my records - it may take a while. Cue soothing music for the next hour

I could go on, ad nauseam Hmm

Mintyy · 15/04/2014 22:29

Oh, you must have found it difficult, being called xxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Windymill. Weren't you ever tempted to change?

WitchWay · 15/04/2014 22:30

I have an unusual surname which is spelt exactly as it is pronounced - the number & variety of wrong spellings amazes me & drives me nuts.

My first name is a popular name for women my age (late 40s) with the less common of the two main variant spellings. People I don't know often mispronounce it (when they ought to have said Mrs Witch in the first place), friends of my DH almost invariably use the wrong spelling (grrr) & my old friends get it right.

wowfudge · 15/04/2014 22:31

My DSis has suffered her name being misspelled all her life.

On the other hand, I used to work in a retail/service industry where we took orders over the phone and in store and made lots of deliveries. We always took the trouble to check spellings of names and addresses.

You would think customers would appreciate this, but no - the number of times you'd get a snippy, "well how else would you spell it?" Or, "of course there's no letter x on the end of that", when of course there were several different possible spellings.

You just couldn't win.

GuineaPigGaiters · 15/04/2014 22:33

Ops yadnbu! I hate when you have signed your name on an email and they reply with your name JUST above where they typing and they still fecking cock it up. It's lazy and rude!

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 15/04/2014 22:35

I think you should be thankful. My full first and maiden name was:
xxxxxxx xxx xxxxxxxxxxxx
My full first and married name is:
xxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

My eyes!!!!!! too many x's.
I couldn't make head nor tail of that post

NearTheWindymill · 15/04/2014 22:36

Many many times Mintyy and as no doubt you might recall the little sods would persist in starting my first name with an L. Grrrrrrrr. Anyone remember the ad' with the Parker pen and the cheque book a gazzilion (sp) years ago when Mintyy and I were sparkling young things Grin. God, that put me in line for a piss take.

NearTheWindymill · 15/04/2014 22:37

Well I was only trying to say it was too bloody long. Could have spellt it out though - those Heartbleed gits probably know anyway.

CustardOmlet · 15/04/2014 22:38

Another one here who's Nan miss spells there name! She's not even senile.

DaleyBum · 15/04/2014 22:38

I'm Dale. Not Gale or Gayle or Dave or fucking Jade. Yes I'm sure. Yes I know it's not usually a female name. And would you mind removing the S from my surname while you're correcting my first name?

RAGE

LineRunner · 15/04/2014 22:41

My ExH never knew how to spell his own sisters' names.

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/04/2014 22:41

Ihate

You've got my name in there! And I love you for making the assumption it is spelt that way. Because it is!

bruffin · 15/04/2014 22:42

I had a greek maiden name which was a common greek name but had an extea letter. I was used to spelling out my name. I now have a very plain english name 2 syllables made up of two easy to spell english words, but i still get does that have an "e" on the end

Pumpkinette · 15/04/2014 22:59

DD's nursery teacher spells her name incorrectly despite me correcting her on it several times. Her name is on her folder / coat peg / name badge but the teacher chooses to ignore this and spell it wrong. DD has a name that's not too common (not in the top 100 but in the top 500) we use the correct most common spelling.

Her teacher adds a U into the middle of the name and has taught DD to write her name with the incorrect spelling. I then have to correct DD and its confusing her and she no longer wants to write her name on her drawings etc. Angry

MelonadeAgain · 15/04/2014 23:00

I have a very common English surname which is always spelt with two 'l's. I have never known it to be spelt with one 'l'. Nevertheless, DH and I both sometimes get letters addressed to us as surname with one l.

It also has a German spelling, which is rare in England. Bearing in mind we are both English, living here. In England. About half the time that I give my name I get asked is it [the German spelling is then spelt out].
