To think private schools should be banned?

BethanyBoobs · 31/03/2014 22:40

Why should someone have a better education just because their parents have money? Why should someone have a better chance of getting into university because their parents paid for their education? It makes me feel uncomfortable that people can buy their kids an upper hand when it comes to education.

I feel the same way about private health care too.

IMO private schools should be banned. Everyone should have the same chances when it comes to their education.

Aye aye comrade....

Joules68 · 31/03/2014 22:42

Banned? How could that be enforced then?

meditrina · 31/03/2014 22:43

Are you going to ban state school catchments too? Or perhaps it would be easier to abolish parental choice totally, and just have a bureaucrat assign children to schools?

LaurieFairyCake · 31/03/2014 22:43

News flash

You live in a capitalist state

If you don't want to either fight from within or I hear North Korea is sunny this time of year

TwistedReach · 31/03/2014 22:43

Yanbu

WorraLiberty · 31/03/2014 22:43

I think name changing to start a bun fight should be banned but what do I know...

DamnBamboo · 31/03/2014 22:43

YABVU.

You do realise the state school system couldn't cope with all the kids who are currently privately schooled, should there be a ban!

What would you suggest in this instance then hmmm?

wetnoodle · 31/03/2014 22:44

What about excellent state schools in catchment areas where house prices are £££. Isn't that also using your money to buy your kid an advantage?

GreenLandsOfHome · 31/03/2014 22:44

I pay for my children to have swimming lessons so that they can learn to be better swimmers. I pay for them to have music lessons so that they have that opportunity.

Money will generally buy you better. Better food, better experiences, better car, better house.
Should we ban everything, because not everyone can do/afford them?

SecretRed · 31/03/2014 22:45

Think you should be ranting about how shit many state schools are. People who are able to pay are going to want the best for their child. Why wouldn't you?

Gruffalump · 31/03/2014 22:46

What an idiotic idea.

motown3000 · 31/03/2014 22:46

Just introduce more Grammar Schools, some of them " Boarding schools" offering better standards .

If that was done , there would be less or no demand for Private Schools, they would be just for Snobs And Foreigners?

As for banning them, No one should be told how they can spend their money.

DamnBamboo · 31/03/2014 22:46

Shall we ban private tutors as well?
Perhaps only have one type of school shoe/trainer so rich kids don't have more expensive versions.

Bowlersarm · 31/03/2014 22:48

Move to a communist country OP? YABU.

AcrylicPlexiglass · 31/03/2014 22:49

I have some sympathy with your position, comrade BethanyBoobs but think it would be difficult to achieve. Let's make state education and the nhs brilliant instead so that the bourgeoisie won't be able to buy health or education advantage with their filthy lucre.

BethanyBoobs · 31/03/2014 22:49

Comparing cars and holidays to education is silly. Education is a right. Cars and holidays are a privilege.

OP posts:
Bowlersarm · 31/03/2014 22:50

Think it's you who is being silly, tbh.

BobCrow · 31/03/2014 22:50

YABVU Why should the children of wealthy, educated people have to go to school with the children of the poor and stupid?? I don't want my children being held back at school because of large class sizes and disruptive and stupid children.

OP you might just as well have a moan about the fact that people with more money can and do live in nicer areas than those with less money. People with money use that money in ways that they think improve their lives, whether that is by living in a nicer house, paying for holidays in 5 star hotels or buying their children the education that isn't available in many state schools.

FreudiansSlipper · 31/03/2014 22:51

are private schools always better

I would be overjoyed if ds got into the best state primary school in our area

pombal · 31/03/2014 22:51

YABVU

I don't want my PFB mixing with oikes/oiks(sp??)

jellybeans · 31/03/2014 22:52

YANBU

Would people who pay for private education prefer that instead ALL kids got great educations or maintain tings as they are so their child can have an advantage over the majority?

In a way though state school can give more of a social education and those that do well are seen more as doing so on their own merits.

DamnBamboo · 31/03/2014 22:52

As long as people meet their tax obligations, how they spend the rest of their money is their right

Are you happy to pay more in taxes to build all these new schools/train all the new teachers (that the private sector currently has and is paid for by richer people) - in the event of a ban on private schooling?

Spero · 31/03/2014 22:53

Because life is often shit and unfair. And some people have money and some people don't. And a lot of people who have the money certainly don't deserve it.

But I cannot think of a single society which, when trying to redistribute wealth to make it all nice and fair, has not ended up a ruthless, bleak and corrupt system which has to build walls to keep people in.

i would rather agitate for EVERY state school to be a 'good' school and end this ridiculous 'choice' notion which simply means that the pushy and rich middle classes will colonise the good local schools by buying up all the houses in a five mile radius and force everyone else into some sink school.

elQuintoConyo · 31/03/2014 22:53

Oh do shut up, dear.

HopeClearwater · 31/03/2014 22:53

Bob Crow (shit name, very funny ha ha) are you for real? Your first paragraph is incredibly offensive.

OP - YAdefinitelyNBU.

They're banned in Finland.

Let's try to redress some of the inequality in this country.
