To think private schools should be banned?

Why should someone have a better education just because their parents have money? Why should someone have a better chance of getting into university because their parents paid for their education? It makes me feel uncomfortable that people can buy their kids an upper hand when it comes to education.

I feel the same way about private health care too.

IMO private schools should be banned. Everyone should have the same chances when it comes to their education.

Why on earth would a private school not admit a child with gay parents?

Private schools are allowed to discriminate, no?

My Dsis is sending her two DC to private school. One of the 'advantages' she thinks it will bring is her children only being allowed to mix in certain circles. She happily admits she doesn't want her DC mixing with gay people, poor people, thick people, etc (her words not mine) so that's why she's sending them private.

I think my sisters attitude is disgusting BTW.

There are private specialist schools for children with disabilities. Where there is a market there will be a private sector whether school form or tutors.

Well, thankfully, it won't happen.

I think bullying might be worse in some private schools.

Your sister is the problem OP, not the school she's sending her children to.

And private schools get a wad of taxpayers money anyway as they are allowed to call themselves a charity. I imagine the tax relief is substantial given the prices of some.

I think its a"Creative Writing " assignment for the Lower 4th of "Wycombe Abbey".

"Imagine your Parents Could not afford Private education," would you feel Private Schools Should be abolished to give you the same opportunities?

They are allowed to be selective, much like a grammar school is or a church school?

I'm not sure this extends to weeding out the offspring of gay parents or little Zachary furnish john is scuppered education wise. Which seems extremely unlikely.

What next OP when you've got that?

Private housing will be banned. We all live in identical blocks of council built flats.
Private holidays will be banned. We all spend a fortnight in state-provided holiday camps.
Private cars will be banned. We all take the bus.

Ok,,a bit of sibling dislike. Don't base all private school parents on your sister. Personally, I know no one with that attitude.

Bethany are you sure you're not jealous that your sister is sending her kids to private school?

I'm not sure Finland will do it. May have to be North Korea, or Russia in the fifties.

Her attitude is a problem, yes.

I still don't agree with private schools though.

Her DC are going to a great private school with a fantastic academic record, great facilities and opportunities for music, sport, drama, etc and excellent pastoral care. On the other hand my DC will be at the mercy of the postcode lottery and it will depend on whether they manage to get a place at the outstanding primary (which isn't outstanding compared to the private school) or the sinkhole one.

'I think the fact that so many people are choosing not to burden the state increases the quality of state education too...'

Children who are educated by the state are a burden?

I would say that children who get those connections that allow them to be given a large salaried job by a mate they met in school, that is funded by taxpayers through dodgy government policy is more of a burden on the state tbh.

Of course I'm jealous.

I'm jealous that her DC will get a better education than me. I'm jealous that her DC will have more opportunities available to them.

It's unfair.

Right, so you're pissed off that it's unfair. It is, but banning private schools won't make a difference. You're still faced with good primary or shit one. The private school doesn't create this situation.

If all private schools are banned the. There will be bigger classrooms in state schools. Then I won't have to pay so that would be great. Should everyone cancel their private medial insurance too so there could be be a bigger buden on the NHS?

There are lots of gay students & probably teachers at dds private school

And the government even pays the fees of some children to there as it is a specialist school.

Where do you draw the line? How would you stop a group if parents who home educate employing a tutor- at what point would they become a school?

What about private music schools, dance schools etc - at what point would they come into the list if banned places?

Mrsmorton - that is very rude any offensive. It shows a lack of education that you cannot form an argument without being abusive.

The sentiment behind the OP's post is sound and shouldn't be dismissed. Why should children born to wealthy parents have a better chance at a good education than those born to poorer parents? Our system is inherently unfair.

I have a Dutch colleague and he finds it unfathomable that that there are such discrepancies in the UK education system depending on where you live or if you can afford private school. In the Netherlands he tells me that all schools are good, even the Royal Family in the Netherlands send their children to local state schools.

If private schools were banned those parents would make sure that the state system improved which is what is required to give a fair playing field to all.

Bethany it's a shame that your children may have to attend a not so good school. Why not put your energies into campaigning for an improvement to state funded education instead of being envious?
