To think private schools should be banned?

Why should someone have a better education just because their parents have money? Why should someone have a better chance of getting into university because their parents paid for their education? It makes me feel uncomfortable that people can buy their kids an upper hand when it comes to education.

I feel the same way about private health care too.

IMO private schools should be banned. Everyone should have the same chances when it comes to their education.

Wow, bobcrow. While I don't agree with the OPs point, why bring "stupid" into the argument?? Children who go to state schools aren't automatically "stupid" because their parents can't afford private education.

I don't know. I just find it sad that private schools are allowed to discriminate with things.

For instance, would a selective private school (or any private school for that matter) admit a student if they were a child of a gay couple for instance? Probably not. I don't think they're covered by the same discriminatory laws as state schools. Unfair for everyone.

Likewise would people with disabilities and learning disabilities be admitted to private school? Highly unlikely.

I think children in private school grow up in a bubble for this reason. I think state school pupils have the luxury of mixing with children from a bigger variety of backgrounds so maybe it's them who have the advantage?

Maybe parents shouldn't talk to their kids, just so they don't get an upper hand over kids whose parents ignore them all day?

Wake up, it's the parents who do the best for their kids that are the good people, and the ones who don't give a shit, don't read to them, don't tell them about things, discipline them, and tell them that school doesn't matter that are in the wrong. If you banned private schools parents would just send their kids overseas or arange for them to be home tutored along with the kids of other like-minded people. You can't legislate to stop people doing the best for their children, it's a basic human desire.

Apparently state school education gives far better outcomes when young people reach University age than private school / independent sector. My DSSs education is loads better in his comprehensive than my education in private school was.

Only difference was that I left school talking a bit more posh, like

Banning private education is going to push more children into state schools, and the budget would not cope with that, and education overall be much worse.

If you were to close the private schools, there would be hundreds of more children fighting for school places in already stretched catchment areas.

I think the fact that so many people are choosing not to burden the state increases the quality of state education too...

That advantage isn't showing anywhere once they leave school, is it?

Private Schools only exist and thrive , because the State does not provide what parents want. In many cases "Grammar Schools" in Grammar School Areas "Private Schools" tend to struggle to survive.

BobCrow I've always suspected that parents who send their children to private school are snobby and you've just proven my point. Thanks for that.

I suppose the children become snobby too because of their parents/schooling.

Why on earth would a private school not admit a child with gay parents?

Remove the very large chip from your shoulder and stop being ridiculous.

You sound very naive OP. Or you really don't know much about private schools. Yes, they 'admit' children with gay parents. Yes re disabilities.

Do a bit of research before you make such sweeping statements.

My 3 DCs go to our local primary, my husband and I are both highly educated.

Their school is fine, results fine, kids like it, everybody is happy.

Most of what they learn and their general achievement however is not because of the school, it's because of my husband and myself.

That is also an 'unfair' advantage is not?

State schools are paid for through taxes and I imagine that most of the expenditure on state schools comes from the pockets of those who pay to send their kids to private schools....

OP and AcrylicPlexiglass Sadly, we have had to spend thousands of out 'filthy lucre' on private healthcare. Had we not done my DP would not have been able to walk over the last two years. We think it's worth it. As his condition has worsened recently we've been issued with an NHS wheelchair. It's a nightmare to push because it's so heavy and unwealdy. If we choose to spend the money we earn on a lightweight chair to make our lives easier, that's our choice. So to summarise, fuck off.

Banning private schools isn't the answer. Improving state schools is.

I choose state education because I believe it is better. However, I live surrounded by very good state comprehensives most of which always have places available so it's easy for me to say that.

We aren't Finland. And you can't make us like Finland by banning private schools! Anymore than you can give us a "relaxed, continental drinking culture" by extending opening hours and putting a few tables with umbrellas in front of pubs! Cultures develop over hundreds of thousands of year and legislation has to reflect culture, not the other way around!

Hope I think you are being offensive calling my name shit.

Bethany, suggest you move to Finland

No not banned, but fees should be taxed at the luxury tax rate. It is a luxury after all to have smaller class sizes and additional opportunities that these schools provide.

Before anyone whinges that they save the tax payer money by not using state schools they really don't. They take their money and influence away from schools who could do with their invested interest. You also reduce the economy of scale.

And it would be like saying you shouldn't pay a luxury tax on cakes as you are freeing up bread for the poor people.

It don't work like that.......

I've been to bloody Finland. It's a completely different culture to here. What works there may not work here frankly.

Report
LittleBearPad · 31/03/2014 23:02

And good state schools in many places are economically selective because of the impact they have on house prices in the catchment area.
