I'm against MGM too, but being realistic FGM is much worse and it must be rooted out first.

thing is, male circumcision might be medically indicated, while fgm never is.

I don't really understand what they are being convicted of - repairing an old mutilation i.e. re-stitching up or cutting away scar tissue? Poor woman, she must've been in agony.

No - this is not something to celebrate (well it is, but it is not that big a deal in the scheme of things).

It was alleged that following a patient giving birth in November 2012, a doctor at the Whittington Hospital repaired female genital mutilation that had previously been performed on the woman, allegedly carrying out female genital mutilation himself.

I'll celebrate when someone gets prosecuted for doing this to a CHILD because then it will show that we are taking it seriously and bollocks to the culture argument - this is a doctor who went too far in surgery on an adult.

It must be wonderful for the woman involved but it is absolutely not a victory for the fight against FGM, not matter how the CPS try to dress it up to get people off their backs about the issue.

I am as strongly against maleGM as you are, and have said so in other threads. But please don't let us divert attention from this important step announced today. Stopping FGM will be an important step towards stopping MGM which will meet much more resistance.

Infibulation is the most severe form of FGM, where the external parts of the clitoris and inner labia are amputated, and the outer labia sewn together leaving only a very small hole for menstruation and urination. When a women gives birth, the join between the outer labia has to be cut open to allow for the passage of the baby. Re-infibulation is sewing this incision back together after the birth.
