In assuming most men going on holiday alone to Thailand, are going to have sex with prostituted women or men?

It is estimated that about 1% of Thailand's GDP is earned through sexual exploitation tourism.

In 2003 (the last year for which full figures are available) some 545,000 British residents arrived on visits. If you remove the children, and the British citizens visiting for business or reasons other than a holiday, you arrive at about 489,000—314,000 men and 175,000 women. That is 139,000 more British men than women coming to Thailand for a holiday—a gap of 28 per cent.

In no other international holiday destination, is there such a big difference in the number of women and men travelling there. There is no obvious reason for this apart from prostitution.

or maybe it is women who are paying for it. evil, man hating feminist women who then are slandering the good name of single blokes who just want to play golf

mathanxiety · 16/02/2014 20:50

You are going to have to provide figures to back up your claim about feminism tarring everyone with the same brush.

HollyMiamiFLA · 16/02/2014 20:51

See - you are unable to back up your claim. You can't even give a gut instinct percentage.

chibi · 16/02/2014 20:51

so who is financing the sex trade in thailand then, holly?

or maybe you think there isn't one?

HollyMiamiFLA · 16/02/2014 20:53

I'm not even going to answer that. read what I have said on this thread.

chibi · 16/02/2014 20:53

'i love data and frown on gut instincts!'

'you can't even give me a gut instinct'

bless your cute lil inconsistencies, holly, you hot mess of inarticulate logic fail, you

HollyMiamiFLA · 16/02/2014 20:54

In fact - fuck off, I have clearly said it is a massive problem and one that needs tackling. I've been there and seen it. It's disgusting.

This will be deleted but I'll just say fuck off again.

Grennie · 16/02/2014 20:55

The evidence is that there is an enormous prostitution industry catering to western men. Lots of people who have been on holiday in Thailand have on this thread talked about it. There have been masses of official reports and documentaries on it. Tourist guides on the net say to single men, that even if they are not there for this reason, they will be constantly approached and it will be assumed they want to buy a prostitute for sex.

Countries with good sex equality have roughly the same number of women and men holidaying in Thailand. Countries with poorer sex equality like ours, has significantly more men than women holidaying in Thailand.

This is all actual facts. You may decide to believe that men who live in western countries with poor sex equality are just more interested in diving holidays in Thailand than men who come from western countries with good sex equality. That explanation makes absolutely no sense though.

this could be a helpful suggestion for the thai govt to improve their statistical analysis though - a little tick box form at the airport, randomised naturally.

Holly have you been to Thailand

if you have were you totally oblivious to what is going on there. difficult to not see when it is so open

HollyMiamiFLA · 16/02/2014 20:58

Chibi - have you read what I said about the sex trade in Thailand?

HollyMiamiFLA · 16/02/2014 21:00

Seeing as how no one on here seems to understand what most means nor can they even give any actual percentage - not even as a gut instinct, but they can only come up with insults, I'm not going to bother with this "debate".

Which is a shame because it could have been a good conversation about the appalling exploitation of women and children by some lone males in Thailand.

Grennie · 16/02/2014 21:01

So you are ignoring my longish comment about evidence Holly?

OP posts:
HollyMiamiFLA · 16/02/2014 21:04

Grennie

No denying that Thailand is a destination for sex tourism. No denying that a lot of males go there for sex.

That's well known and clear from your evidence.

It's the word most. That's all. Just a word.

chibi · 16/02/2014 21:04

insults like telling people to fuck off? oooookay.

yes this could have been an interesting discussion if you hadn't insisted that a huge sex industry is financed by a few men. your insistence on stats is hilarious in the face of such an implausibility.

is there a special reason why you are so invested in arguing that the sex industry in SE Asia is underwritten by just a few (very busy, presumably) men?

FreudiansSlipper · 16/02/2014 21:07

holly how can you give a percentage when many are not going to own up to what they have done or plan to do (again not all)

similar to when stag groups go to prague or riga

but the number of women working informs us much more than all those honest men do

mathanxiety · 16/02/2014 21:08

How about figures to back up your own claim then, Holly?

'massive problem' is very vague.

And is it patronising of you to assume the 'problem' needs tackling? Maybe the Thais are simply not as hypocritical as we are in the west about selling sex? Maybe the financial benefits of working in the sex trade are worth the risks to women from impoverished areas who sell themselves? Maybe they are feeding families back home, or buying land or a flat for themselves and do not welcome the western efforts to save them? Maybe there is no stigma involved for them? Maybe they don't care about the racism or sexism?

Of course, I have no figures to back up any of my musings, sorry.

AgaPanthers · 16/02/2014 21:11

"Countries with good sex equality have roughly the same number of women and men holidaying in Thailand."

Which countries are you referring to?

"Countries with poorer sex equality like ours, has significantly more men than women holidaying in Thailand.

This is all actual facts."

Have you got the figures on this?

HighlanderMam · 16/02/2014 21:13

HollyMiamiFLA

MOST Means more than half of them all. (the greatest quantity/part/number)

Just thought i'd clarify that for you.

JapaneseMargaret · 16/02/2014 21:13

YANBU.

I couldn't say with any veracity that MOST men going to Thailand alone are going for the cheap sex.

However, I am more that willing to admit that if I encountered a man going to Thailand alone, then yes, I would totally assume - or at least wonder - if he was going for the cheap sex.

Yes, I would assume that. I would think the worst.

Not great, is it? Whose fault is that? Well, as far as I can see, it is the fault of the disproportionate number of men who travel to Thailand for the cheap sex.

When disproportionate numbers of men stop going to Thailand for the cheap sex, then maybe I won't leap to such depressing conclusions.

WinWin.

mathanxiety · 16/02/2014 21:20

I would like to refer you to the study I linked to above, AP.

HighlanderMam · 16/02/2014 21:20

OP YANBU.

Most (more than 50% of) lone men who go (alone) to Thailand are going to have sex with prostitutes. (IMO)

mathanxiety · 16/02/2014 21:21

It's hard to put numbers on the issue, but equality and perceptions of equality on the part of men have a lot to do with the phenomenon.
