In assuming most men going on holiday alone to Thailand, are going to have sex with prostituted women or men?

It is estimated that about 1% of Thailand's GDP is earned through sexual exploitation tourism.

In 2003 (the last year for which full figures are available) some 545,000 British residents arrived on visits. If you remove the children, and the British citizens visiting for business or reasons other than a holiday, you arrive at about 489,000—314,000 men and 175,000 women. That is 139,000 more British men than women coming to Thailand for a holiday—a gap of 28 per cent.

In no other international holiday destination, is there such a big difference in the number of women and men travelling there. There is no obvious reason for this apart from prostitution.

I think there is a significant difference between prostitutes in the UK and those in a place like Thailand. The study I linked to upthread explored the factors contributing to the attraction of Thai women for western punters.

Thai women offer the fantasy of white male dominance. They are frequently small, brown skinned, and they smile and act eager to please. They are also much cheaper than western prostitutes, and there isn't a middleman/pimp to deal with. Men can do anything with them, and with any number of them. All in a tropical paradise.

In the study, punters stated they were tired of dealing with ball-breaking western women, they were excited by the prospect of having sex with women who were exotic and compliant and 'Other' in a way western women were not.

Eastern women are objectified to a very high degree in western culture. Moreover, the 'product' on offer in eastern locations is a highly standardised one -- dark haired, brown skinned, small, slim women wear similar skimpy clothing in go-go bars and other points of sale, and being Thai or Cambodian or Vietnamese, a lot of western people have difficulty distinguishing individual facial features from others.

it's ok everyone, there may be a massive sex industry in thailand, but it isn't most men who go there fueling it- it is two guys, barry and steve. helpfully, they have fangs and are unrelated to anyone, and have never lived next door to anybody in their lives. they definitely aren't mrn anyone here would know!

can we all stop making harmful generalisations about men who go to thailand alone before there is some kind of crazy pogrom against tgrm, and get back to making feminism more man friendly?

But there is no doubt in my mind that there are men travelling to Thailand tonight, from the UK, probably lovely guys all of them, great with the kids, love the wife, who are travelling with the express purpose of having sex with women and children, in ways that are not available in this country.

128 men
100 women

Maybe 100 men are there for sex but the 100 women are there for other stuff that the men just don't care about.

by the way, if you are trying to apply a statistical generalisation to a particular case, you are doing maths wrong.

i.e. most men who go to thailand participate in the sex trade does not imply that this particular man who goes to thailand participates in the sex trade

similarly, if a certain man who goes to Thailand does not participate in the trade, it does not invaldate a claim that most men who go to thailand participate in the sex trade.

I would guess that most men going to Thailand go with a female partner or in mixed groups. But most single men going to Thailand are going there for one main reason.
