In assuming most men going on holiday alone to Thailand, are going to have sex with prostituted women or men?

It is estimated that about 1% of Thailand's GDP is earned through sexual exploitation tourism.

In 2003 (the last year for which full figures are available) some 545,000 British residents arrived on visits. If you remove the children, and the British citizens visiting for business or reasons other than a holiday, you arrive at about 489,000—314,000 men and 175,000 women. That is 139,000 more British men than women coming to Thailand for a holiday—a gap of 28 per cent.

In no other international holiday destination, is there such a big difference in the number of women and men travelling there. There is no obvious reason for this apart from prostitution.

YANBU I think a good proportion are. No proof of course but that's my opinion.

I'm another who thought it was all an exaggeration - until I went

The level of seediness was absolutely mind-blowing. Had it just been consenting adults it wouldn't have been so bad, but I was horrified to see that children are involved in this too - hideous

YANBU.

I can only base this on my ex but I am certain that is what he went for, despite him denying it. The reason I am convinced is because he picked up something whilst away, which he passed on to me - sadly the infection spread to my brain and could have been fatal. I then had to wait 3 months to get the all clear from HIV tests.

If any partner or mine wanted to go somewhere like that it would mean the end of our relationship.

I'd make that assumption, certainly. To the point where I'd have to find someone willing to go with me to see the assorted temples etc. of Thailand should I ever get the yearning to go simply so nobody thought I was off out there to run riot in the brothels.

YANBU.

y DD's go to Amsterdam, they don't smoke weed, or are into specialist bondage gear.

DO daughters tend to tell their mothers about that sort of thing? Hmm

What a lot of horseshit.

Group of lads I know go for the golf.

Many, many Russians go there as it's one of the few not-too-distant sunny places where they don't have much trouble getting visas.

Plus there's elephants.

Plenty of men, including my dearly beloved, love both temples and beaches and have never purchased sexual favours in their lives.

Tarring huge swathes of the male population with the same brush in such a nasty way just reflects badly on you, not on them.

Perhaps just stop making assumptions about people you don't know?

It's not me you have to worry about - its those hot young beach boys will be making the same assumptions.

Plus there's elephants Grin

I'm not tarring huge swathes, just the 3 I know about.

It isn't horseshit, it happens. And no-one has suggested that ALL men who go go for the sex - just many of them!

That is a massive generalisation and a bit of a slur on men.

Mind you - Marmaris sounds an interesting place for a holiday now. Or the Gambia.

Do they like 43 yr old single women there?

"DO daughters tend to tell their mothers about that sort of thing? "

My eldest has stopped smoking weed, she used to. She's tried other drugs.

My middle (other one) has also tried other drugs.

We are open about sex, I went "for a walk" on a shopping trip, so she could go into A Summers.

She is only 18 and when she first went to Amsterdam, we discussed why the bondage gear should be available, because she hadn't heard of people enjoying having their oxygen supply reduced and dying from having an amateur set up.

Some of us know our friends and family well enough to believe that they are not going just to get what is as available in our local pubs (I'm in Liverpool, Blackpool isn't that far away).

My brother was approached by many women in the bars when he was on a world tour when he worked with an airline.
It made him sad, he's a loyal happily married man that hates people that play away.
He said they were stunningly beautiful and very young.

Bangkok is a horrendously seedy city but the rest of the country is wonderful. It's a great place to visit.

Yes, it explains a very large part of the gap between numbers of male and numbers of female tourists.

Perhaps not all but the vast majority.

It is utterly disgusting the level of sex tourism out there and the huge numbers of flabby repulsive 60 year old men getting off with children of 13 -16 year olds.

There have been many documentaries made about this so it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

Exactly, if people went there largely for the temples and beaches, the number of women and men travelling there would be about the same number travelling there. There are way more men going there than women. And yes, Thailand is known for its child prostitution.

True - but men are more likely to travel by themselves in general than woman are.

I think. Haven't checked that statistic though.

golf and drugs tend to be more male pursuits too tho.

I would agree with you on the over 50s lone male tourist, but on the 20-30s I don't know - I hope not.

There is not a wide gap in terms of women and men from the UK going to an international tourist spot, for places not renowned for sex tourism.

I actually remember reading something that young women from the UK are more likely to travel abroad alone, than young men.

So if there's a 28% gap - that's not really "most men".

But yes - looking at the ages of the tourists would be interesting.

Report
Grennie · 15/02/2014 15:40

Holly - You do know a lot of couples go to Thailand to look at the temples and beaches? 28% gap probably does account for a lot of the men going there without their female partners or family.

OP posts:

HollyMiamiFLA · 15/02/2014 15:42

And a lot of men and women go alone to Thailand as well. Not just in couples.

Like I said - I think you are being as sexist as someone saying "most women".

It would be a better argument if you had better data.

Report
HollyMiamiFLA · 15/02/2014 15:43

Or are you assuming most men just want sex?

Report
mmgirish · 15/02/2014 15:43

I am currently living in Thailand. Yes, like lots of other SE Asian countries, there is a sex tourism industry here. However, I never see it. It is ridiculously easy to avoid it in fact.

Report
Grennie · 15/02/2014 15:45

Holly - So why do you think so many more men than women holiday in Thailand?
