AIBU ... to STILL feel positively evangelical about electronic cigarettes? [thread 2]

magimedi · 15/11/2013 22:02

Here we go with thread two.

There is a great deal of information on Thread One about vaping :

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1865547-to-feel-positively-evangelical-about-electronic-cigarettes?pg=1

I think that many of us have been able to give up smoking thanks to e-cigs & vaping & are all feeling the positive results & want to spread the message.

I use about 1.6 to 2 ml of liquid a day, but sometimes it goes up to 2.5ml. I use 18mg nic solution, having smoked 40-50 a day. It's a lower solution than recommended for as heavy a smoker as I was (was !!!!!!) but I'm down to about 12 fags a day with no problems and am delighted with that, for the moment.

I'm not going to increase the strength of my solution. I'll just vape the same anyway, I'm sure, and may find I want more nicotine so smoke more, who knows? Stick with what I've got atm. The only thing I intend to change - and probably not for a long time yet - is decrease my nicotine intake, however I do it, be it fewer fags or lower liquid; probably both in the end.

Cantabile · 23/12/2013 19:09

Plenty, that video you posted about cleaning your evod was really good and I am trying to clean my two (what are they called again? Tank thingies!) which are like hers.

I've taken one apart and got as far as taking the wicks out, but her two wicks are all nice and clean, and she only has to dry burn the one which doesn't come out. My two wicks are brown and have fallen apart so are just lots of bits of thread.

I've managed to gather the threads together again, more or less, and got them into one bundle (not two - too fiddly), but I can't wash them more without risking losing them all! I have no spare wick. Have you got any ideas what I can do? Would soaking them in vodka help? Can I do that with them in situ so I don't have to worry about losing all the threads again?
Or would it be better to just leave that tank until after Xmas when I could get new wicks?
Or is there something else I can use as a wick?

Sorry for all the questions!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 23/12/2013 20:27

It's a bastard night to be a smoker Grin

I've just been out doing last minute present shopping, striding through the storm and vaping between shops. I am so glad I didn't have to try and roll or light fags in that weather!

Cantabile I would bin the little bits they are far too much trouble to get back in once they have disintegrated.

If you have an old CE4 kicking around, you can rip the wicks out of that and there will be enough silica for several wicks for bottom coil clearomisers (like in the vid).

If not, you can use cotton wool - anything will do, a cotton wool ball, a strip of make up pad, even the end off a cotton bud. Most people seem to reckon that cotton wicks are better than silica in any case so you might actually improve it (just remember that cotton combusts, unlike silica, so don't let it burn dry). Just twist the cotton wool until you get a strand that fits in the slot snugly but not too tightly. I found which is a complete recoil using cotton. Look in the top left of the video to see the cotton wool wick. Just before the end of the video he puts a cotton top wick in but blink and you'll miss it.

I haven't experimented with cotton yet but I intend to over the xmas break Smile

If you want to wait til after xmas and buy some silica, I can recommend this - I got the 3mm but it's a bit too fat to use for top wicks without unravelling a bit. I reckon 1 strand of 2mm or 2 strands of 1mm should do it.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 23/12/2013 20:40

Maggie, don't feel bad. As goodasitgets says, count the ones you haven't smoked. It's christmas and we are all surrounded by temptation. Have to ask though, did they offer or did you blag? If your friends are persistently offering you fags, it might be worth asking them to be a bit more supportive.

32flavours - Before I had my ecig and was trying to quit, the moment I cracked and had one I'd be back to my 20 a day in no time. Now if I smoke on a night out, the morning after I go back to vaping and don't even want a cigarette.

This. It's what is giving me more confidence this time round than any other attempt I've made to stop smoking.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 23/12/2013 20:47

I'm currently vaping joose juice cheesecake. It's very biscuity which I'm not keen on and neither is DH, so if anyone would like approx 9ml to try (18mg) send me a pm and I'll stick it in the post. It's a rich flavour and doesn't taste artificial so if you think you might like a biscuity flavour it could be for you.

goodasitgets · 23/12/2013 20:49

I am GROUCHY GrinGrin

Using DY4. Candyfloss tastes a bit burnt and so does caramel. Maybe my taste buds are just knackered!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 23/12/2013 20:57

goodasitgets I'm sure you'll be fine with work and normal fag breaks.

It's something that really worried me because my first month or so of vaping I was working from home and I don't think I put it down much. I bought some higher nic (24mg) for when I went back in but found I didn't really need it. It'll probably feel weird for a couple of days then it will feel normal. you can always nip to the loo

I'm finding my vaping patterns are not really comparable to the way I used to smoke at all - it's more moreish but also easier to put down if you have to.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 23/12/2013 21:09

Goodas, you might be burning the liquid. If you're using a variable voltage battery, try turning it down a bit. Also, try giving it a suck or two without firing the battery and remember to draw on it much slower than you would on a fag.

goodasitgets · 23/12/2013 21:58

Do I need to wait after filling a new clearo before using it? Battery not variable but I always puff it a bit without button before using

Cantabile · 23/12/2013 23:21

Thanks again, Plenty! I reckon that dd could make a coil (don't need one, but nice to know it's possible). I'll use cotton wool and give it a go, but I suspect I'll get frustrated - I'm very clumsy!

Goodasitgets, we went to party last night where smoking occurred outside and vaping was unheard of. I felt that it probably wouldn't go down that well with the other guests, so didn't do it. It was a doddle - spent 3 hours without a vape or a fag. If you're at work, you'll probably be fine, but stealth vaping works!

Maggie, a couple of fags is nothing to worry about; vaping's just so different to stopping in any other way.

goodasitgets · 23/12/2013 23:57

I've done ok at work Grin
A couple of stealth vapes. Would usually smoke 3 cigs on my break Blush
Had two and then vaped. Didn't smoke at all in the car on the way to work

MaggieMcGill · 24/12/2013 07:59

In towns round me, Eastbourne, Hastings & Brighton you see vapers everywhere! It's great.

I stealth vaped on an Easy Jet flight yesterday - they say that electronic cigs are banned but I just slouched in my seat, pulled my jacket round me & went for it. I also vaped in the loo & it does not set the alarms off.

Will I be arrested?

I get through 20mls of 12% juice a week. Been vaping for 14months & use to smoke about 15-20 roll ups a day.

MaggieMcGill · 24/12/2013 16:57

Magi! The only time I have seen anyone vaping is outside tesco and that was ages ago:) I'm of on a Rynair flight soon, I'm hoping they like vaping?

magimedi · 24/12/2013 20:01

You will bve fine on Ryan Air - they bloody well sell e cigs (at a vastly inflated price) on their flights.

Mr O' Leeeeeeeeeeeeeery does not miss a trick when it comes to making some £££££.

monicalewinski · 24/12/2013 20:11

Have not read this thread yet, but am going to catch up over Christmas. I read the previous thread and it inspired me enough to get all the stuff, but I was too scared to actually stop - I've smoked since I was 15 (nearly 24 years) and it's a big part of me.

Anyway, I've got to stop now and the time is right, so me and my husband switched to electronic on Saturday. This is it - I stopped both pregnancies and started again, but I really feel e-cigs are the perfect solution as I don't feel like I've 'stopped', just switched.

Can't wait to read how AMAZING e-cigs are and how everyone's been doing!! Merry xmas to all!

thistooshallpasswontit · 25/12/2013 00:02

My quit smoking app tells me I've done 5days and 4 hours. I know its still early days but Im so chuffed. It's a record for me! I absolutely could not be managing without vaping. I don't feel like I'm denying myself like I have in the past-vaping is so enjoyable. Got a smoker staying over Xmas so I guess it will be a real test when the drink starts flowing tomorrow.
Merry christmas all

Cantabile · 25/12/2013 02:07

Happy Christmas vapers!

Joose Juice sent me a Christmas hamper this morning! It's Mince Pie, Cranberry, Christmas Pudding and Mulled Wine, and Chocolate Orange (which had leaked a bit). Haven't tried any as I'm going to do what Plenty does, and give them a couple of days to mature, like fine wines!

Hope everyone has a good time Wine[vape]

YANBU

I switched in may.

I started with the totally wicked brand, then moved and couldn't get the lower strength liquid and often they didn't have the atomizer heads in and i would have to travel to the next town so when a new shop (evolution e cigs in st Helens) opened i went there.

i use a d nova tank with an ego VV battery (have a couple of 1100 mah queen batteries too) and i love it. Going nicotine free soon (had nearly gone nictotine free when i moved so suffered a bit of a set back for the period i could only get higher strengths)

would definitely recommend their kits, cheap prices but good quality items.

None of my batteries have deteriorated (recommend having two batteries to avoid half charging it, you want to fully use the battery until it dies then fully charge in one go to maintain it and have as long a lifespan as poss).

The tanks in the basic starter kits are good quality and if you want to switch to something like the d nova theyre not too expensive to buy (mine was 13 quid i think).

Their dekang liquids are lovely and three for a tenner.

goodasitgets · 25/12/2013 03:06

Doing ok (ish!)
V hard time of year for personal reasons but my tracker app says I've smoked 64 cigarettes when I would have usually had 102 Blush so I am definitely cutting down

goodasitgets · 25/12/2013 03:06

P.s that's not one days intake! GrinGrin

DizzyZebra · 25/12/2013 03:46

Also, haven't read all if the first thread yet or any of this one, but to answer a few questions from anti vapers so far from the first one;

Poster that mentioned hypnotism.

Any good hypnotist will tell you hypnotism does not work on everyone. You have to want it to work for a start.

I have been hypnotised into doing various things (i love hyponotism and in paid well for it). Now, in very susceptible to it. The first time I did it the hypnotist couldn't believe how fast the first thing we did worked (eyes glued shut). He said hed never had anyone go that quickly and thought i was taking the piss at first. I also readily lay on the floor purring like a cat.

However, he has been unsuccessful in a number of other things. Completely unsuccessful. It just.doesnt.work as easily as you seem to think. Even on the same person you don't know if they will react to one thing just because they did something else.

Posters who mentioned nicotine replacement.

Ive tried various things. Theyre shit and you also take in just as much if not more nicotine ith them. Those mouth spray things have 1mg PER SPRAY. I thought i was dying. My throat closed up, i nearly phoned an ambulance. It was horrific.

People saying about children - My daughter knows why i use it. I have been quite honest with her that i use it because i have to, because i took up a stupid habit and now i have no other way of being free of it. Not sure how that's encouraging anything personally. I cant help how others portray it.

To those making statements about addiction, we are ex smokers, not monkeys. We do have the capacity to understand addiction and i am yet to meet anyone who uses e cigs who pretends its anything but another addiction, its just a safer one than smoking. Please take your condescending tones elsewhere.

i may return when ive had a couple of hours kip.

DizzyZebra · 25/12/2013 03:47

Apologies for spelling errors. My phone is a bag of shit and i cant be bothered to correct it.

DizzyZebra · 25/12/2013 03:52

On a lighter note, any other VV users constantly unknowing turning theirs up? I was wondering why on earth my brand new atomizer head tastes burnt earlier.

Its only 1.8 resistance (anyone care to educate me about resistance as in not very good).

Anyway id unknowingly turned it right up and was blasting 4.8v through it! I usually don't go above 4!

DizzyZebra · 25/12/2013 04:56

Phew. Read the whole thread. For the poster asking how many mls etc.

I found i used a LOT more the first time I dropped the nicotine level. I pretty much had it in my.mouth constantly for about a week before i calmed down again.

I'm on 0.8% at the minute and use about 3mls a day depending what in doing. If im busy its less if im bored its more.

I tend to be able to switch more easily between strengths too. Last week they only had mango in a higher nicotine strength and it didn't effect me switching between that and my usual lower strengths.

Going to do the last bit gradually to get nicotine free though instead of another big drop will buy a bottle of nicotine free and a bottle of 0.8% and dilute that way, so 25% nicotine free and 75% 0.8 = 0.6% and so on.
