to feel positively evangelical about electronic cigarettes?

I was reading the AIBU thread about the husband vaping in the house with a newborn. I was struck by the passionate testimonials from former smokers, saying they couldn't have done it without e-cigs. I had tried a puff one of those things that look like a cigarette and was underwhelmed. But I didn't know about the more advanced set ups where you can fill them up with your flavour of choice. Anyway, I was intrigued. I smoked a pack a day for 25 years, and never quit more than a few months at a time, no matter which methods I tried.

nb84 encouraged me to give it a try and told me what to buy to get started.

I ordered a starter kit that night. It arrived the next day and I fell in love. I have three of them, now (one always charging, one near to hand, and one in my purse ready to go) and eight different flavours of the juice.

I don't want to smoke cigarettes any more. I like this better. It tastes really good. It feels good. And it doesn't stink. My hands, clothing, and breath don't reek anymore. I don't have to keep going outside. I don't have to feel like a smelly pariah. My husband can't smell it even when I'm sitting right next to him.

And I don't have to try and not think about the fact that my mother died of cancer after spending her last decade debilitated by emphysema.

And instead of paying £8 a day for fags, I can buy a week's worth of juice for £10. The hardware was less than £20 to get started and will require only £10 a month going forward. Of course, I can spend more. Many people geek out on it as a hobby because the gadgets are fun and constantly improving.

I'm not worried about putting on weight like people usually do when giving up the cancer sticks. In fact, I snack less. I no longer crave sweets. I would normally nibble all day, especially Haribo sweets. I don't want them anymore because I am tasting a bunch of sweet flavours all day long.

I'm so happy that I want to tell everyone - every smoker and everyone who loves a smoker - about it. Grin

Mo, my mum smoked all her life. When she had a series of bad heart attacks in her 60s her cardiologist suggested she give up smoking, but her system was so dependent on it, she resisted. Even when my brother gave her an ecig about 15 years later, she still smoked. Her doctors had by then stopped telling her to stop. Her take on it was that you can live and enjoy life, or you can constantly deny yourself pleasure and live for a long time. She chose the former. As she was actually an incredibly intelligent and sensible woman, we all had to respect her choice, and to be fair, knowing that she was more aware of the risks than we were made it easier to accept. She died at 84.

Your mum has emphysema. Can they cure her? Will giving up smoking cure her illness? Talk to her. She may have made a choice like my mum did. At some point though, you have to accept what she has chosen. It's hard when you think a much loved person is making a serious mistake, but sometimes you just have to live with it. I'm sorry Sad

Help!
I've got my E-go cig and when I press the button it gurgles. Not like smoking the e-lite at all. The nice I've put in is RY4 whatever that is 24 mg and it's awful
What am I doing wrong? Is it supposed to gurgle? I can't even take a puff of it it's so strong

magimedi · 12/10/2013 13:37

Yes, they do gurgle a bit -

24mg is VERY strong. I started on 18mg as an ex 20 a day gold virginia rollie smoker.

There's a good link to gurgling, which I'll go find you.

magimedi · 12/10/2013 13:40

Here is the link to gurgling - you need to read the whole page.

It was Plentyofpubes who originally posted it.

If there is an ecig / vaping shop near you it's well worth dropping by for a chat & maybe try some other liquids.

www.discountvapers.com/why-does-my-clearomizer-gurgle-and-leak/#bottomcoil

magimedi · 12/10/2013 13:45

Me again!

For about a week I smoked both e cigs & my rollies - at first I found the ecig very strong & it made me cough but after a few days - no problems.

I think it's a bit like changing from one brand of cigarette to another, or ready mades to roll ups.

DollyTwat · 12/10/2013 13:53

Thank you magimedi maybe I over filled it?

I've washed out the liquid I don't like and am waiting for it to dry now. I've ordered some Mars bar flavored juice, thank you TheAlchemist for the discount!

If I don't get on with the e-go I guess I can refill all the e-lite cartridges!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 12/10/2013 14:10

Dolly, what sort of atomiser are you using? Do you have a link to the kit you got? Is it the sort you unscrew the sucky end to fill, with the dangly strings inside (top coil), or do you unscrew it from the bottom to fill it (bottom coil)?

There's some more useful info on this page If you scroll down to the videos, the first shows how to clean and dry burn a disposable CE4 (if you have rebuildable ones where you can unscrew the bottoms, even better). The second shows how to clean a bottom coil clearomiser.

I have found the top coil ones can leak if they are screwed on too tightly to the battery. Also if they are overfilled or laid on their side too much. I've had no problems with the bottom coil ones but I know Maggie has. I imagine the quality is a bit hit-and-miss at the cheap end of the market Grin

MaggieMcGill · 12/10/2013 14:11

Has anyone else who is about a week in looking crap or is it just me? I have spots and dry lips and my skin feels rubbish. I know that there is probably a detox thing going on but I thought stopping smoking was meant to make you look and feel better? Anyway, I'm off to the pub. wish me luck, it's my first social outing since stopping. No pressure :)

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 12/10/2013 14:19

So far so good here, Maggie, but I'm waiting for my gums to start gushing blood. I've got fairly bad gum disease but smoking actually stops them bleeding because it restricts blood supply. When people stop smoking, bad gums can start bleeding when they never have before.

Have a lovely time at the pub, I'm sure everyone will be so impressed that you're not smoking that they won't notice the odd spot.

magimedi · 12/10/2013 14:32

My dentist aske me if my gums bled more - but they haven't.

I did go through a phase, for about a month of getting a few small spots & skin a bit meh - at MY age!!!

But now that is over & my skin is much better than has been in years.

Gorja · 12/10/2013 14:42

I have been doing very well with my evape that my husband bought.

He however bought me the 36mg? Flavours and bought five of them!
Is there any way I could dilute these at home as I can't afford any new stuff but want to reduce the nicotine.

Thanks

KatyTheCleaningLady · 12/10/2013 14:43

Thanks Maggie. I don't know what you're talking about, but it sounds like a compliment.

I have vape tongue, I think. I can't really taste any of my vapes. Food is fine. Just not getting the same tasty thrill from vaping.

I think I heard it will pass.

Plenty it's a C4 E-go I think. It fills from the part you suck
I'll have a google and read some forums I think. I really like the taste of the E-lites so wanted to get something similar

Tiredmumno1 · 12/10/2013 16:19

Katy my DH would like to say thank you very much, he got his order this morning Smile and has been vaping since. No cig at all since then either. Despite there being a pack of 20 in the cupboard Grin.

I think it's great that you started this thread, hopefully it makes others aware of these great inventions Smile

I gave up smoking a while back, so won't be trying it. Good luck everyone, you're all doing fab be proud of yourselves Smile

SpookyRestingFace · 12/10/2013 19:45

Katy, I've had days like that, they do pass.

I had a day a couple of weeks ago when nothing was working - nothing tasted good, I tried different juices, different clearos, it just wasn't tasting right. It's quite frustrating. I find a nice minty vape is the way to go on those days, seems to cleanse the palate a bit.

MaggieMcGill · 12/10/2013 21:55

Katy me neither! Just back home and I'm ashamed to say that I've had hunners of fags today :(

onlysettleforbutterflies · 12/10/2013 22:05

I have been vaping for nearly two weeks and not had one cigarette, so pleased with myself and all thanks to this thread. Still really missing it tho, when will the miss lessen? Skin has gone awful too and sleep if that has got anything to do with it?

notundermyfoof · 12/10/2013 22:19

This thread has come at just the right time for me! I need to stop smoking, its disgusting and I can't afford it anymore so its good to read so many positive things about e cigs. Thanks TheAlchemist for the discount code, I'm looking forward to trying out my new vape Smile

magimedi · 12/10/2013 22:48

onlysettle - skin & sleep will settle, give it another couple of weeks.

As will the missing the cigs.

notunder - enjoy the freedom of vaping!

CatelynStark · 12/10/2013 23:30

A bit cheeky, I know, but can anyone PM me the discount code as it was zapped before I could read it Grin?

waikikamookau · 13/10/2013 09:23

mine wont retain its charge Sad, is it a new battery or some cleaning it needs?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 13/10/2013 11:14

Dolly I think there are a couple of separate issues:

The gurgling - unscrew it from the battery, hold a tissue underneath and blow through it until no more liquid comes out. Don't screw it too tightly back onto the battery. If it carries on leaking, I'd say just try another if you have one.

The liquid - 24mg is very strong. If I were you I'd get a few different flavours in 18 or 12mg and see what works for you.

waiki it sounds like you have a dud battery. You should be able to get a refund/replacement if it was new.

I'm on day 11 now - that's a whole 50g pack of GV not smoked Smile

I've been doing some sums - I have saved £17.18 (50g GV + 3 packets of rizlas) but have spent £101.90 Shock I think though that all I need to get now is some spare coil heads and I'm set up for the next few months. At this point I wish I'd given up 20 tailor made/day because the maths would be looking much better!

Cantabile · 13/10/2013 11:49

Well! My ego thing arrived yesterday and is absolutely massive! I am a little taken aback by how big it is, but at least I won't lose it easily. Do yhey all have button you have to press, or is that yet another thing I made a mistake on because I just bought it when friend recommended it without checking it out properly first? Grin

it took a while to put it together as the instructions kept saying "see picture" whichwas very small, and of a black ecig on a black background. Eventually I found a demo on youtube (in, I think, Dutch, but you only had to watch, mwords were unnecessary).

I gave it a go, which made me cough like billy-oh, and decided that I would smoke what fags I had and then start vaping. I have a few fags left, probably an hour's worth.

Wish me luck! Grin
