to feel positively evangelical about electronic cigarettes?

I was reading the AIBU thread about the husband vaping in the house with a newborn. I was struck by the passionate testimonials from former smokers, saying they couldn't have done it without e-cigs. I had tried a puff one of those things that look like a cigarette and was underwhelmed. But I didn't know about the more advanced set ups where you can fill them up with your flavour of choice. Anyway, I was intrigued. I smoked a pack a day for 25 years, and never quit more than a few months at a time, no matter which methods I tried.

nb84 encouraged me to give it a try and told me what to buy to get started.

I ordered a starter kit that night. It arrived the next day and I fell in love. I have three of them, now (one always charging, one near to hand, and one in my purse ready to go) and eight different flavours of the juice.

I don't want to smoke cigarettes any more. I like this better. It tastes really good. It feels good. And it doesn't stink. My hands, clothing, and breath don't reek anymore. I don't have to keep going outside. I don't have to feel like a smelly pariah. My husband can't smell it even when I'm sitting right next to him.

And I don't have to try and not think about the fact that my mother died of cancer after spending her last decade debilitated by emphysema.

And instead of paying £8 a day for fags, I can buy a week's worth of juice for £10. The hardware was less than £20 to get started and will require only £10 a month going forward. Of course, I can spend more. Many people geek out on it as a hobby because the gadgets are fun and constantly improving.

I'm not worried about putting on weight like people usually do when giving up the cancer sticks. In fact, I snack less. I no longer crave sweets. I would normally nibble all day, especially Haribo sweets. I don't want them anymore because I am tasting a bunch of sweet flavours all day long.

I'm so happy that I want to tell everyone - every smoker and everyone who loves a smoker - about it. Grin

if you look in you tube you will see tutorials on how to vape, gently rather than forceful puff that you would for a cigerette

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 13/10/2013 12:16

What did you get Cantabile?

Most have a button but you can get 'automatics' that fire when you suck. They are not supposed to be as good but I don't know why.

DH and I both coughed at first but it went very quickly.

I have a few fags left, probably an hour's worth

Grin

Good luck!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 13/10/2013 15:54

If anyone's still looking for a starter kit, this looks very good value.

DollyTwat · 13/10/2013 20:13

I've cleaned it out and blown in it. Put some USA mix in it and it's way better, I can actually take a puff now! Thanks for all the advice. Looking forward to my chocolate based vaping now

Cantabile · 13/10/2013 20:32

I got a tornado ego c mega twist kit, baccy flavour.

Yes, if I go at it more gently then I don't cough, I think I've coughed twice since I started. Got used to the button too. The taste is not very nice and not remotely like any tobacco I've ever smoked Grin

It's not the same. I actually want a fag, a real one, and I miss putting one down in the ash tray and the smell of it. BUT I also like the idea of being ale to go anywhere with this, not spending anything like as much money, not smelling like an old ashtray, not filling my lungs with tar, and so on and so on.

Now I need dh to follow suit.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 13/10/2013 20:58

It's not the same.

No, it really isn't Smile

So many little things are different - taste, smell, where you vape, when you vape, how long you vape for constantly ... The way I'm approaching it is to cultivate a new habit to replace the old one - then, if I want, and when I'm ready, I'll cut down on the nicotine. Meanwhile it's doing me and those around me so much less harm.

Now I've got some kit that works and liquids I like (currently on hangsen mocha mixed 50/50 with hazelnut - yum) I can honestly say it's nicer than smoking.

If you're a really heavy smoker, go easy on yourself. It doesn't matter if you take a bit of time to make the transition x

meddie · 13/10/2013 22:09

Gorga you can dilute your 36mg with propylene glycol. Totally wicked sell 100ml bottles of the right grade.
You need to make it about 18mg strength to be equivalent to 20 a day habit.
It will dilute the flavour a little too though.
Use an oral medicine syringe and in a spare bottle add 1ml of the propylene glycol for every ml of the 36mg stuff

stillenacht · 13/10/2013 22:11

Am having a bit of a wobble atm. 10 days in. Craving a fag but am not going to have one. Only problem is that I am puffing on my Ego ce4 for most of the day. My juices are 18mg and as I was a max 5 a day girl before I am thinking maybe its too strong for me (been feeling a bit jittery).

DollyTwat · 13/10/2013 22:37

I had my e-lite with me today watching ds1 at rugby. Was great as it didn't go out in the rain AND no-one judges you for having a cig. Win win!
I am still having real fags - can't quite get over my cup if tea and a fag morning habit

Cantabile · 14/10/2013 00:23

So really, I should have bought more cigarettes yesterday, and weaned myself off them gently. Bother! But readong these last few posts has made me feel better about it, so I shall nick some of dh's horrid extra long things and retire.

Thanks for help and advice.

magimedi · 14/10/2013 08:29

I took a week of mixing cigarettes & e cig, before I went over to just ecig.

stillenacht · 14/10/2013 18:40

Didnt crumble and have a fagSmileSmile

Got watermelon (0%) today and mixed it with the apple caramel pie and its yummy SmileSmile

Binkyridesagain · 14/10/2013 19:06

I've discovered cheesecake, I can indulge in desserts with out the calories. I love vaping!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/10/2013 19:18

Cantabile, do whatever works for you. I wasn't intending to stop smoking until March 1st. I thought I'd get some vaping kit for christmas and then have plenty of time to get used to it before I stopped. It was only because of this thread that I dug out the kit I'd been given a while back and not got on with. I worked out I just needed stronger liquid and ordered some and I haven't looked back.

DH is moving over much more gradually. He's been vaping at home except for the first and last fags of the day for a few days. Over the weekend he only had 3 a day, instead of 20. Today he took it to work for the first time and had 2 instead of 10 fags - one on the walk to work and one on the way home. The one on the way home tasted so nasty he put it out and vaped instead. He was actually quite cross when he got in, he said 'I've given up smoking by accident' Grin

I'm a little bit sorry I wrote what I did last night - I hope my post didn't cause you to fall off the wagon (or whatever the smoking equivalent is).

The best advice I've read anywhere is to count the cigs you don't smoke, not the ones you do.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/10/2013 19:33

stillenacht, well done! I'm the same, chain-vaping, although I've calmed down a bit today. I'm going to order some very low or 0mg liquid for when I'm just enjoying the taste and playing with the vapour but have actually had enough nicotine.

Today I have been mostly vaping espresso with a splosh of hazelnut (very yummy and a good choice if you don't have a sweet tooth). I also tried RY1 (still want fag flavour for my morning vape) which I prefer to RY4. It's a much drier flavour than RY4 but is not so overpowering as RY6. I think it's my favourite tobacco flavour so far (out of RY1, RY4, RY6, Desert Ship). I have USA mix and Gold and Silver still to try but I'm not hoping for much from them.

ginmakesitallok · 14/10/2013 19:34

I've now been vaping for about 4 months and have successfully resisted smoking while spending a week at my smoking mum's house with the added stress of a poxy child. Hurray!!! I'm still a non smoker!!

Cantabile · 14/10/2013 19:56

Plenty, no one's fault but my own if I have a fag or two! I did have 3 of dh's super-kings lastnight/this morning, and bought cigarettes today. TBH, I feel much better now that I have given myself permission to smoke and vape. I have only had 8 cigarettes today, when I would normally have had nearly 40 by now - heavy smoker? You bet! So actually, I feel really, really good about that.

I think that I have resisted the increasing bullying of 'society' for so many years that expecting to just stop was a bit much. There is still a huge part of myself that says "no, I bloody won't stop" even though I know that even I myself want to - at least a bit. This is probably my best chance.

So thank you, everyone for this thread.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/10/2013 20:13

Wow that's brilliant, well done! Grin

I know what you mean though. I'm actually planning to have a fag on 31st Oct, just to fuck up 'stoptober' because I Will Not Be Told.

gin, well done you too - was it hard to resist or just yucky to be around?

On the subject of gin, has anyone found a good gin flavour? I've seen a couple for sale but after my bad experience with rum (tasted like a kebab shop rum baba) I'm a little cautious.

Jux · 14/10/2013 21:17

Again, well done you lot!

I'm curious about flavours. My brother was investigating making his own but didn't get far. Is anyone making their own? (I don't mean mixing pre-made, btw.)

Jux · 14/10/2013 21:18

meant to open Hi again, .... ^^

Jux · 14/10/2013 21:20

Plenty, maybe as gin is already distilled, you could distil it a bit more and then mix it with - what is it, propylene glycol? Tada!

thingymibob · 14/10/2013 21:30

Thought I would join you all. I too gave up smoking by accident.

I was a 40 a day person, 200 every 5 days, I have been smoking since I was 14 and am now 46. Over the years I have tried cold turkey, hypnotherapy, gum, patches, lozenges, accupunture, zyban. All failed.

I had used an ecig on one or two nights out and on flights in the past. In March, I was going to another event where smoking is really tricky so looked online for a new ecig and found JacVapour. I decided to try and cut down to 10 fags a day. The first few days were tricky. I missed the habit of smoking but I used a timer on my phone and refused to go under 1 hours between cigs. Then 2 hours, then 3 etc

Gradually, I found I was having less and less and by July, I was on 1 a day. On July 22nd I had my last cigarette. I downloaded an app at the beginning which showed me my progress. It's definitely true you should count the ones you haven't smoked

I haven't smoked 7558 cigarettes, I have saved £2947! I put away the £100 I was spending a week into a savings account. I have paid for a really amazing camera, weekends away, a new washing machine and my DD car excess after a crash. I still have money left!

I have spent a fair bit on vaping supplies but no where near what I was spending on the fags. I moved on from V3 from JacVapour just before I stopped properly to a larger auto tank/battery combo and am now using the manual EVOD (I think) from Vape Escape. I have never liked the so called tobacco flavours so have used fruity ones - fave at the mo is chocolate limes

So there is my story, I hope some people read it and give it a go. I feel so much better, I feel really proud of myself, my kids say I'm not coughing (though I never really noticed I was). Friends and family are now asking when will I give up the ecig. But I'm not going to rush, it's amazing I have got this far. I do plan to reduce from 18mg nicotine but no idea when, I'm just easing myself into being a non smoker and one day to be a non nicotine addict ... eventually lol

magimedi · 14/10/2013 22:28

Cantabile - Mixing vaping & smoking is the way to go to start with. You'll reach a point when you can't be arsed/don't like the taste of the cigs & be a full vaper.

4 days to go & it will be a whole year for me of not smoking!!!!!!!!

(Just in cas e I haven't mentioned this earlier Grin )

Cantabile · 15/10/2013 18:56

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW

Sorry for shouting, but, really WOW! Grin

Since 1pm I have had one cigarette!!!!!!!!! One cigarette. I was perfectly capable of smoking 6 in an hour, and never fewer than 3 unless I made a massive effort or was somewhere smoking wasn't allowed. One cigarette!

Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you.

Cantabile · 15/10/2013 18:58

I think I'd like to try apple flavour. Any recommendations?

(if I didn't say thank you to you all, um, thank you! Wink)
