My ILs do not have and have never had a dishwasher. I, on the other hand, would not be without mine. Whenever they come to stay, after having a cup of tea they will go and wash their own cups up, or their bowls after breakfast or whatever. It really gets on my tits. I have a cocking dishwasher, it's going to be turned on anyway to wash up my bowl which you haven't touched, so why wouldn't you just put your things in there. Or, better still, stay out of my kitchen.

Yanbu, it would piss me off too. Hand washing won't get it as clean as the dishwasher so tell them they're wasting time and energy.

My inlaws and my parents do this, it is annoying!

Yeah my mil does this too and sometimes DH does it and I know I am utterly unreasonable but it drives me fucking INSANE.

My Mum and Dad have a dishwasher but don't use it.

My DF is guilty of this also. I don't know why it annoys me as much as it does, but it does. Then I feel guilty when I see his crestfallen face when I tell him. YANBU.

Oh and drying up. Nobody drys up. Just leave it.

Hide the washing up liquid? Direct them to the dishwasher?

Do you have children? If your children are small have a grandparent child gate that they can't open? If your children are older say you are teaching them to load dishwasher and they need encouragement?

I have a mother with boundary issues...

Could you say to them in word of one syllable "Please don't wash your crockery, I'd prefer it if you put it here and I'll load the dishwasher"

My ILS also do this it drives me mental - use the FUCKING dishwasher!!!!

I no longer have a dishwasher but this used to drive me mad at my old house. I used to hide the washing up liquid when ILs were coming to visit.

Also putting things in the sink rather than straight in the dishwasher.

And yes to drying up MIL always does this and it drives me potty.

Mine too. Except MIL doesn't actually wash her cups, she just sort of rinses them

So we end up putting them in the dishwasher anyway.

I guess YANBU to feel a bit annoyed. But .....

..... my lovely Mum, who is no longer with us, always thought that she was 'helping' by washing up the odd cup and teaspoon - she never quite 'got it' when we said to her 'just put them in the dishwasher'.

Ye gods! We don't have a dishwasher and I'd think it was the second coming of Christ if my MIL even managed to put her dirty crap in the sink, let along wash anything up! YBVU

Off topic but FIL also takes over the remote control. I sat through 3 hours of soaps one eve and was too embarrassed to tell him I don't watch any soaps when he asked me (after the longest 3 hrs of my life) if they were "taking over dear?" .

Hmm I have observed the 'rinsing' myself with DM.

I try not to watch a lot of her pottering in the kitchen....Never watch a parent or PiL cook bacon, eggs etc. You don't want to know, or indeed distract, the bacon handed form their tasks ...shudder...tries to erase that episode of 'House' from memory.

We have a dishwasher. We, also, have about 20 of exactly the same white mugs yet DH always, always, always rinses out the mug he has just used to use later! It pisses me off. I am forever shouting saying put it in the dishwasher or we have more than 1 bloody mug!

You lot are mad!!! Dishwashers use 10 times as much water, electricity, loads of detergent, salt and god knows what. What's wrong with washing up by hand??

My ILs wash up their stuff when they come over. I think it's quite sweet.
