My ILs do not have and have never had a dishwasher. I, on the other hand, would not be without mine. Whenever they come to stay, after having a cup of tea they will go and wash their own cups up, or their bowls after breakfast or whatever. It really gets on my tits. I have a cocking dishwasher, it's going to be turned on anyway to wash up my bowl which you haven't touched, so why wouldn't you just put your things in there. Or, better still, stay out of my kitchen.
aibu to feel a bit stabby?

I think I am these people. I don't have a dishwasher and wouldn't even know how to open one let alone fill it correctly so would always wash up my things (in the sink) when at somebody's house. I never realised I was appearing 'smug' or unreasonable, I actually thought it was polite and aren't dishwashers really expensive to run?

Jeez, every day's a school day.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 16/09/2013 21:09

YABU! And nuts! My Mum drinks her tea and then leaves the cup wherever she is sitting! I don't have a dishwasher and they're not THAT clean. I wash my dishes in very hot water thank you very much!

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 16/09/2013 21:10

Pony you're correct...it's the chip on the shoulder of the OP (oh so proud of her dishwasher) that is the weird thing here....I suspect OP that you feel MIL is not acknowledging your dishwasher enough...is it such a symbol of your success then?

MakeHayIsAWhaleNow · 16/09/2013 21:10

pony you are welcome at my house!

MakeHayIsAWhaleNow · 16/09/2013 21:12

And my washing up water is crazy hot. I really should wear washing up gloves or stop moaning about my hands falling to bits....

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 16/09/2013 21:13

Mine is boiling and if my cups are a bit tannin stained then I bleach them! You can't get cleaner than THAT! [kicks OPs dishwasher]

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 16/09/2013 21:13

What neo said

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 16/09/2013 21:15

neo you do realise someone will now scream at you about the bleach residue you must be leaving on your cups Grin

jollygoose · 16/09/2013 21:15

they are trying to help you, would you rather they sat back and did nothing?

TalkativeJim · 16/09/2013 21:17

No dishwasher here... But I am with you on the drying the dishes. They would have dried on their own, and I wouldn't have had to stand over you telling you where every painfully thoroughly dried piece gets put away, and oh, I have four soaking tea towels to dry which wouldn't even have been used, but THANKS for the help Hmm

Secretswitch · 16/09/2013 21:17

My dishwasher broke about two years ago. We have no money to repair or replace the scum sucking demon. I don't miss it.

EugenesAxe · 16/09/2013 21:24

Sparkling - yeah! Unless you need the space to stack other dishes, don't fucking dry up! Air is loads more hygienic than any tea towel...

This would also annoy me, by the way OP.

rubyflipper · 16/09/2013 21:25

My MIL (bless her) doesn't put anything in my dishwasher. Instead she 'helps out' by doing the washing up by hand. But she is so awful at it - uses lukewarm water that hasn't been changed, doesn't rinse anything - that the dishes are still filthy and I still have to wash it myself.

Sparklingbrook · 16/09/2013 21:26

Drying up makes my skin crawl Eugene, I know someone who dries up the stuff out of the dishwasher. Confused

sherbetpips · 16/09/2013 21:27

Yup my MIL does that. Pisses me off no end but god knows why!

MrsWinklepicker · 16/09/2013 21:30

No no no no no no no Neo, def not that (also please note this is a light hearted thread). I don't think I would feel so stabby if they washed everything up (although would still think why not use the machine), but very weird to just wash up your own cup, no?

OP posts:
sherbetpips · 16/09/2013 21:30

Oh and the drying everything instead of leaving it on the rack. Then just leaving items scattered all over the kitchen because she doesn't know where to put them. Leave them on the bloody rack then!!
Oh and wiping down the tips with a dirty damp cloth and no soap/spray especially after prepping dinner and raw meat!

sherbetpips · 16/09/2013 21:32

Tops not tips, could have been worse

mycatlikestwiglets · 16/09/2013 21:39

YANBU - my in laws also do this, yet they have a dishwasher so should know the rules! I know it's totally irrational but I have a little rant under my breath every time I find the "helpful" washing up they've done and left for me to put away.

pixiegumboot · 16/09/2013 21:40

what's with a washing up bowl? filthy things, just fill the sink with water. and while you're there clean the bloody tea cups properly in HOT water so the stains come off fgs!

Tilly333 · 16/09/2013 21:43

Not just mine then .... and WHY WHY WHY (whilst we're at it) do they put the 'odd' knife or teaspoon in the empty washing up bowl!!! I have to retrieve it and put it in the washer (and touch the odd 1/4 inch cold water) ugh ugh! WTF!!!

themummyonthebus · 16/09/2013 21:45

I taught my parents how to stack the dishwasher. It's backfired though as every time I put it on they manage to open it halfway through the cycle to put in another teaspoon, but not notice everything is dripping and steam is coming out so don't restart it.

So we get up to a dishwasher full of dirty plates and pans and end up having to do the washing up by hand so we've got something clean to eat breakfast out of.

RobotHamster · 16/09/2013 21:46

Why are washing up bowls filthy Confused

MrsHoratioNelson · 16/09/2013 21:47

I'm not suggesting that washing up by hand is unhygienic. I'm saying that its not a fair comparison. You can't do the washing up of a fully loaded dishwasher (especially taking into account a change of water eventually, rinsing - you do rinse, don't you??) with one bowl of water.

usualsuspect · 16/09/2013 21:53

Competitive washing up Grin

Loving the PA 'you do rinse don't you'
