My husand drink 2-3 pints beer once or twice a week at work. And drink a glass of red wine with dinner at home occasionally. Does he drink a lot or not? We always argue with this.

doens't sound a lot

MrsEricBana · 28/07/2013 17:56

That is definitely not a lot. Do you think it is?

AKissIsNotAContract · 28/07/2013 17:56

Doesn't sound like much at all. I drink more than that.

Bowlersarm · 28/07/2013 17:56

Very little. That's only about 12 units, isn't it?

So about 6 pinta a week and the odd glass of wine. That is very little and way under the recommended units per week

Bowlersarm · 28/07/2013 17:59

Is this a reverse OP?

whereaboutinlondon · 28/07/2013 17:59

2-3 pints beers each time. So if he drinks twice a week he drinks 4-6 pints of beer. And I would say he drinks a glass of wine once every week average.

FrogsGoWhat · 28/07/2013 17:59

That's a "moderate" amount and probably healthy for his heart :)

DP drinks a can of beer maybe 2-3 times a week, and maybe a home poured unmeasured whisky twice a week. He goes out and will have about 3 pints once a month.

I consider that light to moderate drinking. HTH. :)

marriedinwhiteisback · 28/07/2013 17:59

That's very moderate. My DS will have a couple of beers, a couple of whiskies or a couple of glasses or red wine. He never has more than that but he has that every day. Even if we go out that's his limit - it just is. I have never seen him drunk and we have been together more than 25 years well maybe once or twice a tiny bit tipsy

formicadinosaur · 28/07/2013 17:59

One beer or glass of wine three days s week

BridgetBidet · 28/07/2013 18:01

No, not a lot at all. Within the weekly limits the NHS recommends too I think. It's 21 units a week for men and I doubt he is drinking more than 16. And that limit has been criticized for being unreasonably low.

4thfloor · 28/07/2013 18:01

where does he work that he can drink 2-3 pints?

If it is genuinely 2-3 pints once or twice a week and an occasional glass of wine, it does not sound too much.

whereaboutinlondon · 28/07/2013 18:05

He works at the bank. Every Friday his colleagues gather in a pub near the office. And sometimes they have a meeting in a pub or a coffee shop.

NoComet · 28/07/2013 18:07

I'm guessing DH drinks what your DH does with one visit to the pub.
Three pints of beer/cider, a couple of glasses of wine and one or two Pimms in summer and glasses of whiskey in winter. Again ~12 units. Me a unit or two less because one pint of beer is in the pub doing his hobby (it won't be more than on as he's driving).

YouTheCat · 28/07/2013 18:07

That's moderate drinking.

My ex would drink more than that every day.

whereaboutinlondon · 28/07/2013 18:07

Well 2-3 pints is average. I saw him drinking 4 pints of beer or 2 pints of beer and 2 glasses of wine when he drank much.

OP posts:
Iaintdunnuffink · 28/07/2013 18:08

Doesn't sound like lots.

whereaboutinlondon · 28/07/2013 18:11

Which is worse, to drink small amount of alcohol more often or to drink a large amount less often?

OP posts:
squoosh · 28/07/2013 18:13

It doesn't sound like much at all, do you have a little notebook where you keep record of all units consumed? Even 4 pints a couple of times a week isn't excessive.

Poor bloke.

FrankelInFoal · 28/07/2013 18:15

Drinking large amounts on a less often basis is worse - it's also known as binge drinking.

As long as he is within recommended limits and doesn't do stupid things like to drive after a few drinks I wouldn't be worried.

Twirlyhot · 28/07/2013 18:16

A pint of beer is probably around 2.5 units (unless it's the weakest stuff) so 6 max a week = 15 units. A large glass of wine could be 3 units so, maybe 3x a week, that's 9 units. 24 a week. 21 units a week is the recommended. Depending on the strength of the beer and the size/frequency of the glasses of wine he is probably on or a smidgen over the recommended amount but he also isn't binging. It causes more damage to eg have 18 units in one night and none the rest than to spread it out.

Is there a reason you think it's a problem?

MrsKeithRichards · 28/07/2013 18:16

doesnt sound a lot.

my dh doesnt drink at all

NoisesOff · 28/07/2013 18:17

It's very little.

whereaboutinlondon · 28/07/2013 18:17

I count the number of drinking rather than the amount of drinking in a week. Then it feels like he drinks a lot because I count when he drinks a glass of wine over dinner which is stressful to me. But he wouldnt count it so we argue. Should I not count a glass of wine with dinner?
