I may be naive here, do correct me if I'm being totally ridiculous, but I am managing 3 cages of rats, 2 rabbits, a cage of ice and 2 cats fine now while I'm pregnant, and they'll all still be here when dc1 is born. I'm reasonably sure that won't be the end of the world...

Mice not ice. Ice would just melt. And be fairly boring as a pet.
