To think our house might be haunted?

I'm a non-believer usually but some weird shit has happened since we moved in 3 weeks ago. The heating keeps turning itself onto the highest setting (it was like a sauna in here yesterday) and we keep finding water splashes up walls when nobody has been in the house.

Last night I went to our bedroom to find all the duvet and pillows off the bed and on the floor. DH swears he didn't do it.

Today I come home from work and my ornamental elephants are laid on their sides with their tusks missing and what appears to be a red liquid leaking from them and onto the carpet. It looks awful. Nobody else has been in the house. AIBU to start wondering if maybe something weird is going on?

Is the red liquid raspberry cordial?

AllThatGlistens · 25/06/2013 14:32

Erm the elephant thing is weird! Do you have a photo? What's the liquid?

SunBathinginNevada · 25/06/2013 14:38

The red stuff is dark and sticky and it's all over the tusks too which have just been left next to the elephants.

YABU. Read my lips. There are no such things as ghosts.

Pennyacrossthehall · 25/06/2013 14:40

Run. Just run.

On a more serious note: someone is messing with you. Changing the locks would be first on the list, as well as checking all the windows (and other means of access) are closed when you go out.

BeKindToYourKnees · 25/06/2013 14:41

How do you know they are water splashes?

AllThatGlistens · 25/06/2013 14:41

I'm sure you've already thought about this but does anyone else have a key? Weird landlord? Old tenants?

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 25/06/2013 14:42

How exciting yet scary.

Any chance cats could be getting in?

Keeps record of incidents. How dies the house feel? Any weird vibes?

frizzcat · 25/06/2013 14:42

Change your locks - old renters/owners or maybe family with a spare key are playing a joke - or what they think is a joke .....

hiddenhome · 25/06/2013 14:43

I think somebody's been in.

You need to change the locks.

CuChullain · 25/06/2013 14:43

Hmmmmmm

First of all take the tin foil hat off

Second, as someone else has suggested change the locks.

Third, if these strange goings on continue have a word with your DH

ArthurSixpence · 25/06/2013 14:43

I don't believe either, but weird things have happened at work that I cannot explain.

Pictures of the elephants would be fascinating.

SunBathinginNevada · 25/06/2013 14:44

Nobody else should have a key other than perhaps the old owners but we were told they moved miles away. It definitely appears to be water splashes on the walls as it dries without a trace. Cats can't get in and even if they could, how would they have done all that? cats can't strip a full bed or create an elephant massacre scene on the fireplace.

Weird as hell, can you leave a camera recording somewhere discreet and see what's happening, think thats what I would do.

SunBathinginNevada · 25/06/2013 14:46

I am keeping a log. So far we have the heating turning itself on full all the time (until the house reaches such a temperature that people are starting to feel faint). The bed being stripped. Some odd noises. The TV being on when we got up one morning, water splashes on the walls and now the elephants.

Where is your house built? Is it an old building or did it used to be a school or shelter or hospital grounds or anywhere someone could have died in bad circumstances? Is it possible to research previous owners?

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 25/06/2013 14:48

Oh yes and the camera is a fab idea! (Nanny cams maybe) something people won't know is a camera

ShatnersBassoon · 25/06/2013 14:50

Someone is trying to scare you.

You have seen waaaaaaay too many movies! :~)

SunBathinginNevada · 25/06/2013 14:51

The house is only 10 years old.

I'm a believer but always check for the normal explanation first! I'd go with former occupiers, cats or a madman in your attic first.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 25/06/2013 14:51

penny these things fascinate me beyond belief. :)

Solo · 25/06/2013 14:51

I used to live in a house that was haunted and all kinds of weird stuff happened. The TV being turned on, the gas fire being on full blast in the front room on a weekend morning when I got up, lights and kettles turning on (was in the room when the kettle switched on), the oven...
Does/would it bother you op if it is a ghost? I loved having my house guest.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 25/06/2013 14:52

But what was on the land before?

unobtanium · 25/06/2013 14:52

Oh, my TV has turned itself on a few times, to very loud volume, at about 3 am. Definitely no spookies in my house. Just something weird going on electrically. Same could apply to your thermostat.

Elephants and bed-stripping are harder to explain.

Plant the cameras. This could be interesting...
