AIBU to be irritated by people who call squash juice? They are 2 different drinks

OP posts:

Squash is diluted,
Juice is out of a carton or freshly squeezed,
Pop is fizzy,
Council Pop is out of the tap.

Nothing more disappointing than being offered a drink of Pop only to be given a Kia-Ora.

idiot55 · 22/05/2013 16:51

Its a regional thing!

as the others have said.

Juice in scotland means any soft drink, fresh orange, coke, squash they are all juice.

However I tend to say diluting juice.

Yes Filly, unfortuntly there will be kids in some areas of scotland who have possibly never had frsh fruit juice, really sad, but not funny ( I am sure the same goes for any region in the UK)

NotGoodNotBad · 22/05/2013 17:21

Definitely different to me - juice has to come from real fruit, squash is generally synthetic, and gets diluted. Pop does not get diluted and is fizzy. DH however thinks they're all juice - or used to before 20 years of me correcting him... He is from NE England.

ItsallisnowaFeegle · 22/05/2013 17:25

ALL soft drinks be they 'squash' (diluting juice) 'fizzy pop' (ginger) or fresh juice are 'Juice' OP.

YABU! Grin

BigBoobiedBertha · 22/05/2013 17:26

It isn't a regional thing though is it unless some regions are getting it wrong on purpose. When the manufacturers of squash call it squash then that is what it is. It would be like me saying my name is Big Boobied Bertha and people from another region calling me Betty or Brian or Boggy-head. It would just be wrong.

They don't call it juice ergo it can't be juice. And that is quite apart from the fact it isn't the juice of anything.

ItsallisnowaFeegle · 22/05/2013 17:27

X-posted with all my fellow Scots Grin

Weegiemum · 22/05/2013 17:31

In our house (in Glasgow) we say "juice juice or diluting juice?)

It's all juice. If its fizzy juice, it might also be ginger.

TwistTee · 22/05/2013 17:34

Why isn't Juice from concentrate called Squash?

AmberSocks · 22/05/2013 17:47

i used to call all drinks juice,i caught it from my friend, even juice was water,i dont say it anymore though. The word pop irritates me!

goldenlula · 22/05/2013 17:57

I call squash juice, always have done and can't see that changing. I use 'fresh' juice to differentiate.

LadyBeagleEyes · 22/05/2013 17:59

But it clearly is a regional thing BigBoobied, or at least a Scottish thing, as all the Scottish posters have said on the thread.
So we're all wrong?
I'm in my 50's and it was how how was brought up to say it.

Euclase · 22/05/2013 18:01

YANBU !

Cordial is squash, squash is squash.

Fruit squeezed/flattened/squasheh/hit with a mallet anything that is fluid and emitted from said fruit is juice. NOT squash !

peanutMD · 22/05/2013 18:02

Well I'm Scottish and squash is not juice, its a vegetable type thing

but dillutin' juice on the other hand...

Hmmkay · 22/05/2013 18:02

Yes this really really annoys me too!! I try and explain to my mum the difference and she just doesn't get it!

ninjasquirrel · 22/05/2013 18:05

Juice and fizzy drinks generally taste nice. Squash generally doesn't (especially if it's the sugar-free kind, bleurgh). So knowing what you're being offered is important!

peanutMD · 22/05/2013 18:09

In oor hoose ye get asked

"dae ye want a drink e juice"

if the reply is "aye"

ye say "wit kind?"

so people are perfectly aware what they're receiving :o

whois · 22/05/2013 18:12

Juice and squash/coridaial are different things. Obviously! HTH :-)

Tee2072 · 22/05/2013 18:16

There is no cordial or squash in the US of A.

Fact.

ItsallisnowaFeegle · 22/05/2013 18:17

Tee - Koolaid?

Londonseye · 22/05/2013 18:20

Juice in Scotland is juice. Squash as a word grates me, but not enough to care that much. Yabu.
Come to my house and you can get some "council juice" Grin

Tee2072 · 22/05/2013 18:23

Never called that, ItsallisnowaFeegle. Called juice, kool-aid or maybe bug juice.

Never squash or cordial.

ItsallisnowaFeegle · 22/05/2013 18:24

Grin London - nothin better than a gless a cooncil jooce

ItsallisnowaFeegle · 22/05/2013 18:25

Tee - lets be Scottish about it then and agree it's 'juice' Wink

Sorry, I misunderstood your post. I'm a dick, basically. Hmm

MrsBucketxx · 22/05/2013 18:27

its juice in my house too, my little boy calls it milkjuice, so there :p

CoffeeChocolateWine · 22/05/2013 18:31

This bugs me too. DH calls squash juice and DS started to pick it up. So every time DS would ask me for juice I'd have to ask "fruit juice or squash juice?" So now DS thinks squash is called squash juice Confused

I'm used to it but it does confuse other people when he asks for squash juice...err...so is that squash or juice?
