AIBU to be irritated by people who call squash juice? They are 2 different drinks

Fillyjonk Grin

In our house, anything alcoholic is called "yuk juice" by DS.

complexnumber · 21/05/2013 17:26

Interesting one (to me anyway) I live in the UAE and have found that N. Americans have no idea what squash is, even when I show them a bottle. They get the idea that it is a drink you need to dilute with water.

They do know what a cordial is (I think)

However, the Indians I have met know exactly what squash is...

(And it is certainly not juice!)

LadyBeagleEyes · 21/05/2013 17:27

In Scotland it's juice, or to differentiate, diluting juice.
There was a whole thread about this a couple of weeks ago.
I've never called it squash.

bettycoast · 21/05/2013 17:28

Regional differences, end of.

Slide/chute anyone?

weebarra · 21/05/2013 17:29

In Scotland, it's juice or diluting juice. Squash sounds like something from the Famous Five. Fizzy juice is ginger, where I grew up at least. This was discussed at length here recently.

"This was discussed at length here recently."
Yes I know, but I quite enjoy this sort of thread, so there! Grin

SillyBlueHat · 21/05/2013 17:39

I didn't see the previous thread, which surprises me as I spend many hours here!

MrsKoala · 21/05/2013 17:40

i never knew it was called juice in other parts, and DH is half Scottish (according to his arse of a Dad 'there's no such thing and refuses to accept DH has any Scottish heritage - miserable cunt! - He's the Scot parent btw) so calls it juice. Whenever i ask for juice in the morning i get squash, but i want fresh juice. (Despite me saying FRESH juice)

ChunkyPickle · 21/05/2013 17:41

Filly - yep exactly Wink

It's great now that he's got to an age where I can actually ask him to bring it to me if I leave it on the table too!

OwlLady · 21/05/2013 17:43

squash is a root vegetable, now please wait whilst i plait my own pubes

OwlLady · 21/05/2013 17:44

actually it's not a root vegetable, it grows above the ground
arf!

FannyFifer · 21/05/2013 20:02

It's diluting juice for fucks sake, squash, seriously, [sets phasers tae Malky] Wink

DryCounty79 · 21/05/2013 20:19

I have to say, I personally can't stand squash being called juice. Mainly because when I was young, we rarely had fruit juice so it was a real treat when we did get it. And every time someone offered 'juice' and actually served 'squash', I was bitterly disappointed.

But I've only brought it up coz you asked, OP! It's not that important in the grand scheme of things :-)

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 21/05/2013 20:22

In my Country it is juice. Squash is a game, with a ball and rackets I think.

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 21/05/2013 20:24

Oh yes and vegetable and can be used if you want to squash a fly or something too.

apostropheuse · 21/05/2013 20:31

It's diluting juice. Fizzy juice is ginger.

A piece n square sliced sausage with tattie scone could be washed down with a large glass of fizzy juice if you were feeling particularly adventurous.

The piece has to be made with plain bread though, to be authentic.

EuroShaggleton · 21/05/2013 20:36

I agree OP. If you are supposed to add water to it, it's squash (or cordial if something posh like elderflower).

If it's squeezed from fruit, it's juice.

wigglesrock · 21/05/2013 20:52

I'm in NI - it's juice or dilutable juice or fizzy juice. Squash is a game.

5318008 · 21/05/2013 20:55

and you prepare your piece on the bunker in yer baffies

(lolling at the baffled non-Scot faces)

getyourheadout · 21/05/2013 21:03

yawn fucking yawn

Naoko · 21/05/2013 21:03

If you want to confuse the matter further, I'm from Holland where 'a vaguely fruit flavoured drink you dilute with water' is called 'limonade'. And absolutely nothing like what you'd call 'lemonade' in the uk.

Between that and having learned, as a non-native English speaker, that a squash is a vegetable, I spent my first few months in the UK seriously confused in the beverage department.

BigBoobiedBertha · 21/05/2013 21:52

the makers of squash call it squash

I don't think you can argue with that, regional variations or not. They don't call it juice or diluting juice or anything else.

BigBoobiedBertha · 21/05/2013 21:54

And presumably it is called squash because it was originally made from squashing fruit, nothing to do with veggies or sports.

You've got to love the English language though, haven't you? Grin

AmIthatSpringy · 21/05/2013 22:21

Squash is butternut. Or a racquet sport

Juice is any drink that is not tea/coffee/milk/alcohol/water

i don't know anyone who calls juice "squash". Acutally makes me shudder a bit.

Juice can be "fresh", "fizzy" or "diluting"

MrsRickyMartin · 22/05/2013 14:57

My house is a squish and a squash. Grin
