To think that you are weak.....

If you smoke and won't give it up.

Surely other than being stupid that is the only reason to persist with such a vile habit.

I smoked myself until five years ago and I will admit that I found the thought of a life without cigarettes terrifying. I tried to convince myself and those around me that I enjoyed smoking when the truth was that due to being addicted I hated the feeling of not smoking. Five years down the line I feel just like you do after a cigarette all the time.

As a former addict I can say that although you don't think it's that bad you do smell. Those you say it's not that bad are being polite or they are used to it. When your kids are at school it is likely that people will know you smoke just by being near them.

Also do you want to meet your future grandchildren? I've just left the home of someone who will never meet his and it is heartbreaking. He used to say that it helped him relax but now he tells me that his throat was so dry and agonisingly painful that he hasn't slept since Monday afternoon.

I'm aware that in being contentious with this post but why else would you carry on knowing all of these reasons and more?

We lost my lovely grandad to lung cancer when I was only 11 Sad

I was gutted, and still don't understand why you would do something which does such significant harm to your body.

I'm constantly begging my DP to give up for Dds sake. He's not allowed near her when he's been smoking. Why should she be put at risk, and smell like him.

pictish · 16/01/2013 14:35

What's it to you?

ICBINEG · 16/01/2013 14:35

hmmm thing is that it isn't "weak" to be unable to give up. Different people find giving up differently difficult.

Just because one person can do it easily doesn't mean everyone can.

So YABU to generalize that giving up smoking is equally hard/easy for everyone.

yabbadabba · 16/01/2013 14:36

Ooh, another soon to be bunfright thread.

yabbadabba · 16/01/2013 14:37

bunfight not bunfright.

Catsdontcare · 16/01/2013 14:37

Well done for only being weak and stupid and smelly for five years.

Catsdontcare · 16/01/2013 14:37

Lol at bunfright

5madthings · 16/01/2013 14:38

I quite like the sound of a bunfright Grin

ClaraDeLaNoche · 16/01/2013 14:38

I am weak. Pass the Marlborough Lights.

yabbadabba · 16/01/2013 14:38

Ive never smoked but i can appreciate how hard it must be to give it up. My partner is trying to at the moment and he is vile because of it.

Catsdontcare · 16/01/2013 14:39

I don't smoke by the way (I am clever and strong and smell like Daisies)

Iamsparklyknickers · 16/01/2013 14:41

Why didn't you give up before?

There you go, just because you had a revelation doesn't mean you can force it on anyone else. Encourage yes, start spouting sanctimonious bs, no.

Every smoker in the country knows the risks, I'd be surprised if most if not all have had a direct experience with someone whose health has suffered as a direct cause of cigarettes. Problem is everybody gets ill and/or dies, it's not some magic live forever cure, this is how people minimise their actions, meaning 'threats' are pointless.

My personal opinion is that smokers are constantly bombarded with anti smoking rhetoric and as a result have either become defiant or desensitised. Much more to be gained from telling smokers how easy it can actually be to give up. It doesn't have to be a massive thing, generally people can do it relatively easily as long as they don't let the odd set back become a huge issue.

ICBINEG · 16/01/2013 14:42

cats "Well done for only being weak and stupid and smelly for five years"
you have this backwards...the OP gave up 5 years ago...she may have been weak and stupid an smelly for decades before giving up...

xxDebstarxx · 16/01/2013 14:42

YABU. It's an addiction and one of the hardest things to give up.

ScarletLady02 · 16/01/2013 14:42

So you were weak and stupid until 5 years ago? Did you suddenly wake up and become smart and strong?

Dahlen · 16/01/2013 14:43

If it was that simple, why do so many intelligent, successful and strong-willed people continue to do it then?

I gave up years ago. I went cold turkey and never had a single craving because at that point I WANTED to give up. That makes me strong, yes?

Previously, I'd attempted to give up because I thought I SHOULD want to, and failed miserably. That makes me weak, yes?

I am the same person. The only difference is that I no longer smoke.

Catsdontcare · 16/01/2013 14:44

Ah yes. Clearly I am strong and fragrant but a little dim

So OP how long we're you a dumbass for then?

ICBINEG · 16/01/2013 14:44

I would imagine people smoke for the same reason they eat chocolate when they know they shouldn't. It feels great in the moment and fuck the future!

IF you have low self-esteem it is hard to value yourself enough to take the plunge and decide to plan for the future. Of course calling people "weak" does wonders for their self-esteem so erm...yeah...go OP go!

Catsdontcare · 16/01/2013 14:44

Were

ICBINEG · 16/01/2013 14:44

Lol cats

StuntGirl · 16/01/2013 14:45

It's an addiction. Nothing to do with weak vs strong or clever vs dumb.

quirrelquarrel · 16/01/2013 14:47

Okay, so I'm weak.
Are you also weak for not being veggie, having kids, having a car, not walking everywhere, going on foreign holidays, not eating the mostly healthily you can.....pick/delete as appropriate.
Everyone's weak in some form or another. I accept this as one of my weaknesses. Let's move on................

StuntGirl · 16/01/2013 14:47

So OP how long we're you a dumbass for then?

I would imagine people smoke for the same reason they eat chocolate when they know they shouldn't. It feels great in the moment and fuck the future!

Grin Love it cats and icbineg

hellsbellsmelons · 16/01/2013 14:48

Well in that case, why don't alcoholics just give up drinking?
Why don't drug addicts just stop snorting or injecting drugs?
Why don't overweight people just stop eating so much???
Well??????? Why don't they eh?????
You are obviously very strong and extremely wonderful. Well done you!!????
