To think that you are weak.....

If you smoke and won't give it up.

Surely other than being stupid that is the only reason to persist with such a vile habit.

I smoked myself until five years ago and I will admit that I found the thought of a life without cigarettes terrifying. I tried to convince myself and those around me that I enjoyed smoking when the truth was that due to being addicted I hated the feeling of not smoking. Five years down the line I feel just like you do after a cigarette all the time.

As a former addict I can say that although you don't think it's that bad you do smell. Those you say it's not that bad are being polite or they are used to it. When your kids are at school it is likely that people will know you smoke just by being near them.

Also do you want to meet your future grandchildren? I've just left the home of someone who will never meet his and it is heartbreaking. He used to say that it helped him relax but now he tells me that his throat was so dry and agonisingly painful that he hasn't slept since Monday afternoon.

I'm aware that in being contentious with this post but why else would you carry on knowing all of these reasons and more?

Oh fuck off. What a sanctimonious post

Short, sharp and to the point. What more do you want in a post? Grin

WorraLiberty · 16/01/2013 15:08

Stupidly, yes you did.

bootsycollins · 16/01/2013 15:09

Congratulations on giving up smoking successfully, your post is seriously smug and flawed though. Your not the first person to give up smoking and you won't be the last, people all over the world beat all sorts of substance addictions every day so spare us the lecture please. If you'd have told us about what methods worked for you, what your trigger points were and how you overcame the cravings etc it might have been helpfull and supportive for other quitters to hear about your experience. Don't know what kind of replies you were expecting but I'd expect that as an ex smoker whose beat the addiction and managed to abstain for a full 5 years you wouldn't need to ask the question "why else would you carry on knowing all of these reasons and more?". Also your reasons, hmmmmm "aibu to think that you are weak if you smoke and wont give it up. surely other than being stupid that is the only reason to persist with such a vile habit" then in the next sentence you say that you smoked because you were addicted not weak and stupid addicted. You don't offer any actual facts just your flawed opinions. You should apply for a job at the Daily Mail.

Saltycopporn · 16/01/2013 15:13

Sorry I'm not being smug I've just been saying goodbye to someone I love. I just wanted people to know that as an ex smoker I know why people won't quit! Maybe some anger in the post that it's easier directing at a forum than someone who is about to die

I just wanted people to know that as an ex smoker I know why people won't quit!

Well now you've told them - it's because they're weak or stupid.

Lovely

Where next?

Weight loss topic?

Or you could go find some alcoholics to share your wonderful skills with...

Saltycopporn · 16/01/2013 15:20

Offer me an alternative then. Or maybe you like spending such a huge amount of money?

An alternative to what?

Not sure who your last post was directed at?

5madthings · 16/01/2013 15:27

Just because you have quit doesnt mean you will stay a non smoker. I gave up for nine years, then after having ds4 i got post natal psychosis and ended up in a psych unit. Everyone smoked pretty much and i started again, it helped me regain my sanity.

wigglesrock · 16/01/2013 15:27

Meh, I smoke about 6-7 cigarettes a week. I like to smoke, I always have liked it. I'm very sorry you are about to lose someone you love, its shit and very sad but smoking is my choice and one I make as an adult.

Saltycopporn · 16/01/2013 15:28

It was you actually worra. If you smoke knowing that you will die earlier and leave your family devastated but you were strong enough to give up and also smart enough to know the danger why would you smoke?

OP posts:
pictish · 16/01/2013 15:28

Well OP, I'm not your punching bag, so you can take your anger and direct it up your arse.

bootsycollins · 16/01/2013 15:29

Just had a fag break, have I missed owt?

DuchessFanny · 16/01/2013 15:30

wow ... ok ... gave up a year ago, but strangely feel no stronger, or righteous. Maybe because i have returned to eating meat (especially the delicious red stuff !) after over 20 years, plus i drink wine, and g&ts and eat loads of shite harumph wish i could be less weak and stupid ... any tips ????

soontobeburns · 16/01/2013 15:31

I gave up smoking for 8 months and got intense depression and tried to kill myself 3 times, lost friends, nearly family and failed my course.

I started again and it was lifted and after a while I became normal again.

I would rather smoke and be "weak" and yes even die at 60 instead of 70. Than to quit and be crippled with depression and maybe die in a few months due to sucide.

CommanderShepard · 16/01/2013 15:33

I've never smoked. Not ever.

So by your logic I'm a fucking Titan!

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 16/01/2013 15:34

I lost mg]y mum (non smoker) to lung cancer. Yes, it was bloody horrific and I wouldn't wish it on my worse enemy but in all honestly, my misery does not give me the right to preach to others how they live their lives!!

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 16/01/2013 15:34

my mum!!

Tweasels · 16/01/2013 15:34

People smoke for a variety of reasons and the addiction grips people in different ways. It is up to each individual how they manage/give up their addiction and making them feel like shit for their choices has a negative effect on cessation rates.

So either admit you are wrong and change your stance on this or, erm, fuck off.

Saltycopporn · 16/01/2013 15:35

Not trying to come across as smug or righteous. Obviously I have and actually all I wanted was to promote a debate. I will review my posts and come back in a bit

OP posts:
quirrelquarrel · 16/01/2013 15:35

What I don't understand is why people get so het up at the merest suggestion of their having a weak spot....isn't a habit just that, something that's too ingrained to get over without putting in loads of effort....i.e. a weakness.

We're not superhumans! we're allowed to slip up and still be considered decent! jeez. The only problem I have with the OP is why she's bringing up the obvious?

pictish · 16/01/2013 15:37

It wasn't 'the merest suggestion' though was it?

I was a great big accusatory hammer!

baremadness · 16/01/2013 15:40

I am a non smoker. Never smoked. Never even tried it. Never done drugs either. But it doesn't take a genius to figure out the concept of addiction. Or to figure out that it may affect people in different ways.

CrazyOldCatLady · 16/01/2013 15:41

Lots of people are weak in lots of different ways. Lower the judgypants please.
