To think that you are weak.....

If you smoke and won't give it up.

Surely other than being stupid that is the only reason to persist with such a vile habit.

I smoked myself until five years ago and I will admit that I found the thought of a life without cigarettes terrifying. I tried to convince myself and those around me that I enjoyed smoking when the truth was that due to being addicted I hated the feeling of not smoking. Five years down the line I feel just like you do after a cigarette all the time.

As a former addict I can say that although you don't think it's that bad you do smell. Those you say it's not that bad are being polite or they are used to it. When your kids are at school it is likely that people will know you smoke just by being near them.

Also do you want to meet your future grandchildren? I've just left the home of someone who will never meet his and it is heartbreaking. He used to say that it helped him relax but now he tells me that his throat was so dry and agonisingly painful that he hasn't slept since Monday afternoon.

I'm aware that in being contentious with this post but why else would you carry on knowing all of these reasons and more?

  1. because people never think it (cancer, COPD, emphysema, heart disease, stroke...) will happen to them. Everyone has a great uncle bill who smoked 60 a day and lived to be 100 I think people don't actually believe all the things that can happen. I mean, they know them logically, but they don't feel them. Denial maybe?

  2. Because it is hard to give up. Bloody hard. I've smoked. Giving up makes you angry, depressed, and you get physical pains too. (I've stopped now, but I would never sneer at those who can't. )

  3. because when you think you've done it, it comes and gets you! You tell yourself that you've demonstrated that you CAN quit, so it'll be ok to just have a few... Grin

  4. addicts are irrational. You tell yourself you are going to give up and then the craving hits and at that moment nothing matters more than getting your fix.

Booyhoo · 16/01/2013 14:49

that's the way to do it OP. call people names and insult them in order to get them to come round to your way of thinking Hmm

you'll catch more flies with honey pet.

Catsdontcare · 16/01/2013 14:50

Oh man is not eating meat a sign of strength Shock

But cows taste sooooo goooooood

Hobbitation · 16/01/2013 14:50

Probably, but we all have our weaknesses. DH smokes but has recently started on the electronic cigarettes instead.

I was never a nicotine addict (smoking just made me ill) but I have bitten my nails for thirty odd years and have only ever managed to stop for a few weeks at a time.

I am also a bit greedy with food and a bit lazy.

Seabird72 · 16/01/2013 14:50

My brother still smokes even though he lived with my dad for over 10 years whilst my dad was slowly dying - his illness was brought on about 10-20 years earlier than it would normally have done - because he smoked (he would have suffered anyway but not as soon as he did). He got progressively worse and needed a lung transplant but to have a transplant you have to be fit enough to survive the procedure and he missed out several times due to getting infections at the last minute. He couldn't move and was living with an oxygen tank. Then he had his transplant and although that was great he still suffered with endless illnesses, fear of rejections, visits to the hospital and changes in his medication every few months - they tell you that you can expect to live up to 10 years after a transplant but it's not plain sailing. My dad suffered with alot of illesses - and lasted 6 years after the transplant before he died a very slow and painful death. My brother was at his side all the time - but still won't stop smoking.

Booyhoo · 16/01/2013 14:51

and i'm a non smoker. i have probably smoked 10 cigarettes my whole life and even i can see how hard it is for some incredibly strong and clever people to give up.

BumpingFuglies · 16/01/2013 14:52

What bollocks.

Ex smokers are always the worst. What prompted your epiphany OP? And did it come with judgy-pants as a free gift? Grin

pictish · 16/01/2013 14:52

The OP won't be back. She has showered us with her sanctimony, so job done.

ItsIcyOutsideIThinkINeedThorin · 16/01/2013 14:52

I can understand why people can't give it up but I can't understand why they start.

quirrelquarrel · 16/01/2013 14:53

I don't smell bad btw, I smell of cigs and soap which to me is a luvvly smell Grin

quirrelquarrel · 16/01/2013 14:54

Cats
In the way that the OP sees it, probably, yeah. You're resisting something, exercising your willpower.

HecateWhoopass · 16/01/2013 14:55

"Ex smokers are always the worst"

Oh god yes! Grin

The smell of smoke on people turns my stomach. It's vile.

Before, it was quite a nice smell Grin

LoopsInHoops · 16/01/2013 14:55

Yeah, OP, this is really helping. Hmm

Now I want to smoke. I had been doing so well, but high-horse riding [will get deleted if I say what I mean] like you really piss me off.

Come here for a scrap, have you?

TantrumsAndBalloons · 16/01/2013 14:56

your post is enough to make me want to carry on smoking.

Id rather be weak than an condescending patronising better than everyone else rude obnoxious idiot.

HTH

Catsdontcare · 16/01/2013 14:57

Ah quirelquarrel you know when people go for a poo and then spray loads of room freshener everywhere and the whole place just smells like sickly sweet poo well that's you but with faggy fumes.

Iamsparklyknickers · 16/01/2013 14:57

itsicy who knows? Why do people become obese, why do people drink so much they find themselves drinking at breakfast and not stop, why do people try heroin, why would someone with diabetes carry on eating junk food all day, etc the list goes on and on.

There's loads of theories, but the fact is we're complex creatures who do self destructive things.

KellyElly · 16/01/2013 14:58

Oh fuck off. What a sanctimonious post.

Catsdontcare · 16/01/2013 14:58

I wasn't stupid until five years ago. I was weak though and a bit deluded about how enjoyable it was to be a smoker.

OverlyYappyAlways · 16/01/2013 15:02

No not weak vain, I have a wedding in 2 weeks I do not wish to gain anymore weight and my anti-depressants make me crave sugar and carbs daily, I may try after the wedding of the century.

pictish · 16/01/2013 15:02

Good for you. Was there anything else you wanted to lord it over others about, or are you done for today?

WorraLiberty · 16/01/2013 15:05

I wasn't stupid until five years ago

That's very honest of you OP

Now what are you going to do about his stupidity?

May I suggest you think before posting?

That might help disguise it at least...

Saltycopporn · 16/01/2013 15:05

I put that one on a plate for you didn't I?
